Mid-Georgia:  Farmers' Market Begins with New Format

Heron Bay Farmers’ Market Begins Saturday Feb. 9th

You must set up an account at the above website in order to participate! We don’t share or sell your information!!!

All orders must be made through our website between Monday at 8 am (beginning on Feb. 4 with order closing on Thursday at 10 pm).

Ordering will close each Thur. at 10 pm until the following Monday at 8 am when ordering can resume.

Delivery will be on Saturdays between 4 and 5 pm in the Cannongate Golf Club Parking Lot

If anything changes, we will let you know. Thanks for your past patronage.

All of our orders have been submitted to Mother Earth Meats. Now we just wait to hear back with a delivery time and our exact totals. Our Green Pasture order from two weeks ago should be in this week and we are already putting together another one.

Want to learn more about real, local food and how to prepare it? The second annual Atlanta area Weston A Price conference is coming up in March and your’s truely will be moderating a farmers’ discussion panel as well as leading a workshop on nutrient-dense condiments. Looking for Other Sources
I am looking into the possibility of offering organic fruits and vegetables to the co-op. While I try to buy locally as much as possible, there is just not a lot growing in Georgia right now. If you know of any local farmers with fresh food to sell, please send them my way. In the mean time, how many of you are interested in a CSA type box of mixed produce? It would all be organic but some things would have to come from farther away, possibly even the west coast. The main advantage here is that you will save money as compared to shopping at Whole Foods and get a higher quality than your typical grocery store. If this sounds like something you would be interested in please send me a quick email (to Sandra at so I can get a preliminary count.

Great News! Cinnamon Tingle cod liver oil / butter oil blend is now in stock and Green Pasture has lifted the restrictions on how many bottles of butter oil products we can buy per month. For those of you that missed the last order or could not get what you wanted – go ahead and order now. Green Pasture products are listed in The Market under GROUP BUYS.

Place your order by Tuesday at 7:00pm. You can pay online with a credit card or drop off cash or check at my house any time between now and Thursday evening. There is a locked drop-box on the wall of my carport if I am not home. Once all the checks have cleared I will submit our group order. It typically takes two weeks from the time you place your order until you can come pick it up. I will contact you via email once our package has arrived.

I found some good deals while shopping for my family last week. I went ahead and bought a few things by the case so I could share with the co-op. These items are listed in The Market under GROUP BUYS > Other and will be available for pick up this Thursday during normal co-op hours (3:00pm – 7:00pm). Also, if you would like to try a sample before you buy I will be happy to share some of my own with you.

Wow! The Bone Broth workshop is quite popular. I have so many people signed up I decided to add a second one. There will be two workshops (covering the same information) one on Thursday, Janyary 31st and one the following evening Friday, February 1st. Both are 7:00pm-9:00pm at my home. If you have already reserved your spot for Thursday you are welcome to switch to Friday if that is better for you. Please just let me know.

This fabulous event will focus on the practical aspects of finding and preparing traditional, nutrient-dense foods. During the morning, we will have a series of lectures on the basics of WAPF principles, the importance of cod liver oil (by Dave Wetzel of Green Pasture), and a farmers’ panel to discuss sourcing of great foods and interactions with local farms. After lunch, the afternoon will be packed with workshops demonstrating various preparations of nutrient-dense foods.

At this point, though, we need some help! We need a number of volunteers to either teach a workshop (potential topics listed below), or to help out with other aspects of the conference. We have a lot of knowledgeable, enthusiastic folks out there who can lend their expertise or their energies to this event. Here are some of our needs:

Workshop presenters – potential topics (we need 10-12 presenters):

  • fermented veggies
  • bone broth
  • dairy – cultured (& perhaps raw as well)
  • grains
  • nuts & seeds
  • dealing with food sensitivities
  • condiments (mayo, ketchup, etc)
  • oils (maybe discussed with condiments?)
  • fermented drinks
  • cooking with liver/organ meats

Additional volunteers needed (some before the conference, most the day of):

  • parking crew (2-4 people)
  • setup crew (3-4 people)
  • cleanup crew (4-5 people)
  • lunch rearrangement crew (moving chairs around at lunch to shift from theater seating to workshops)
  • WAPF table staff (6-8 people on rotations)
  • AV equipment procurer (borrowing or renting – our funds will cover rental)

All volunteers will get discounted admission to the conference; workshop presenters and other high-responsibility volunteer positions will get free admission. If you are willing to help out with any of the above positions, please email Celeste Skousen

It is so nice to see the sun again. I hope that you have all had some time to let it shine on your faces!

The vegetable list is getting very small – it is truly midwinter. Luckily seeds are arriving in the mail and will be in the ground before long. In the mean time enjoy those storage crops and don’t forget the local meat and eggs.

Mr. Stutzman informed that they would be doing some modifications to their kitchen and could not bake while the work was in progress.

Pick ups will STILL be Wednesday night between 5&7pm (volunteer run) and Thursday/Friday 2-6pm (call ahead case by case basis)

The boxes have changed slightly, instead of coming pre packaged, the customer/member will get to hand select the produce they want in their box.

So that means we still only have a select amount of boxes available – so be sure to buy yours asap and pick up asap.

Any extra produce that does not sell in the course of a week, there has been discussions about donating excess food to a local food programs that the Tampa Underground organizes – the good samaritan, the Hub & home church feedings for those in need.

If you would like to be there to help drop off for those folks, please let me know.

Here’s whats been going on at the Co-op.

Over the past few months a ‘steering committee’ has been meeting every month & working to establish bylaws that are in accordance with our values and principles.

We are almost at the point where we can file for Cooperative status with the state of Florida statute 619. Hopefully, within the month that will be a reality.

The problem is our location has to change at the end of February.

We need a permanent spot that we can call home for the state and county to recognize, as our agreement for the Ella’s location was only for 6 months.

The steering committee has begun looking, but currently, the co-op needs to raise funds in order to afford a space. The co-op is current paying for itself but not much more.

We want to recognize and support Sam Turner and his crew that are opening a new grocery store in Chattanooga featuring local foods- Enzo’s. They have a beautiful building just one block from Gaining Ground on Main St. in downtown Chattanooga. Their mission is to support and promote the local farms in this area thru buying produce and meat from local farmers and displaying “bio cards” throughout the store with farm stories/pictures. They have some great information on their website at For more info and photos go to their facebook page. The local food movement is gaining momentum!

Do you ever wonder how long your “fresh” produce has been sitting around before it arrives to you? We all know that eating more fruits and vegetables is the key to health and preventing our widespread chronic disease. It is the nutrients in these foods that gives us the protection and benefits; however, these nutrients oxidize and/or diminish fairly quickly once the produce has been harvested. We can spend our money and time preparing these nutritious foods, but are we really getting what we think we’re getting out of them? What about GMO’s? Who knows what that is doing to us? Depleted soils mean depleted nutrition in our produce.

These issues, and others, are why locally grown produce is so highly sought after. It is generally harvested the day it comes to you, grown in nutrient rich soil by smaller farmers who love what they do and do it sustainably, and these farmers don’t use GMO seed.

What this means to you is that you will get a much fresher product with a much longer shelf life, a product that tastes full and flavorful since it was not picked “green” for travel, produce with dense nutrition, and happier customers who will appreciate the difference they can see and taste in your food. This also gives you the satisfaction that you are producing the highest quality meals that can be produced.

So, kudos to you for being a part of the local food movement!

Statesboro Market2Go:  The Market is Open at Statesboro Market2Go!

Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes
2 medium sweet potatoes
1 TBSP sour cream
1/8 c. butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp orange extract
1/4 cup chopped pecans
Lightly grease potatoes and pierce with fork. Place in microwave and cook until just tender. Cut potatoes in half, and scoop out pulp, being careful to leave a thin shell. Mash potato pulp until smooth, mix in sour cream, butter, brown sugar, and orange extract. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon potato mixture into potato shells. Sprinkle with pecans. Place in a baking pan and bake in preheated 400 degree oven until browned, about 20-25 min.
