Green Fork Farmers Market:  Weekly Product List

Dear Green Fork Farmers Market Customers,

NEW this week—Green Fork Farm has a new batch of beef available. Order your favorite cuts before they disappear! This is premium beef raised on pasture, Jersey milk, and certified organic grains.

We also continue to offer local, naturally grown and handmade artisan products: vegetables, baked goods, honey, microgreens, bath and body care products, lamb, chicken, pork, beef, eggs, and garden seeds. Place your order by Monday at midnight for pickup at the market on Wednesday, or come by and see what we have available for sale from the farmers’ tables. We’ll be in the indoor Breezeway at Nightbird Books, 205 W. Dickson St. in Fayetteville on Wednesday from 4-7 pm.

We are happy to announce that we are now able to accept SNAP benefits for payment at the market for eligible items, including preordered items.

We really appreciate your orders and look forward to seeing you at the market this week.

Wow! Happy summer! Have you noticed how our weather can swing from winter to summer in the space of a few days? (sometimes a few hours) I worked outside today in a sleeveless top, for the first time this season. For those who know me, I was not even wearing a jacket!

We are still in “winter mode” with lots of dried herbs & spices, and bath & beauty products; as well as baked goods & honey. Grundy Greens’ spring greens & Frontier Family Farm’s spinach are available in quantity. Don’t forget Wayne Diller’s popcorn for a healthy & delicious dessert. The daffodils are done at Dogwood Valley, but there are some new hanging baskets & houseplants, as well as a new perennial or two, on the market this week.

Market News

I just want to say thank you to all of you for helping to support your local food system by ordering food from your local farmers thru the South Cumberland Food Hub. Every purchase you make strengthens the infrastructure needed to sustain a local food system in our area. There has never been a more important time to ensure that we have access to good, real food that is superior in nutrition and taste. The more we purchase from the small farmers, the more we can stabilize our supply of good food.

Genetically modified food is on the increase and one way to avoid it is to purchase from the farmers you know. The use of genetically modified foods is quite alarming in several ways. It is detrimental to our environment, to the independence of the small farmers, and damaging to our health. GMO’s are in our soybeans, soy oil, corn, potatoes, squash, canola oil, cottonseed oil, papaya, tomatoes and dairy products. And how many products contain by-products of corn and soy? All of these go unlabeled. And there are more coming that we will know nothing about because labeling laws are not required. There is no way to know how the spliced genes in plants will recombine with the next generations. This is especially scary when you realize that the biotech corporations use antibiotic-resistant genes, bacteria and viruses as the gene “markers” for the intended genes they splice. How many people will develop allergies to these foreign proteins introduced to our food thru gene splicing? Allergies manifest as inflammation, and not just runny/stuffy noses, inflammation happens in the arteries and that’s what causes clogging. Inflammation can happen anywhere in the body and cause untold health problems. There is no way to know just how these unnatural genes affect our bodies once ingested, but it is easy to see that we have a serious obesity and disease problem in America. Never before has there been so much cancer, thyroid trouble, yeast overgrowth, etc.

Buying local food from the small and mid-sized farmer is your way of saying “no” to GMO’S and “yes” to your health and the health of your customers.

Ordering Reminders! We are still offering HOME DELIVERY to Individual customers on Wednesdays! CLICK HERE, until Monday at 4:30 pm for Wednesday options. Deliveries occur normally between 12 and 2pm, but let us know if that doesn’t work for you and we’ll try to accommodate.

In the Garden
This extra snow is really going to help us in the long run (even if you hate shovelling it)! So far we’re on a more normal (30 year historically speaking) spring trajectory. Prolonged winter helps keep moisture in the ground, pests from getting a head start, and planning time on track. Why not take stock of some of the stored vegetables you still have left to help make a better plan for next year’s root cellar (or remind yourself of what you really wished you had more of!) If you can’t grow it all yourself – there’s a few farms around now that are offering larger volume shares for canning or preserving.

Heirloom Living Market Lilburn:  The Market is Open

Greetings All:

Since I will not be here to open the Market tomorrow afternoon, we are now OPEN! I am attending a Weston A Price Foundation Conference tomorrow at Rancho Alegre Farm and I am so excited. Lots of great speakers, a Farmers’ Panel, demonstrations on making Bone Broth, Fermenting Foods, Sprouting grains plus local Farmers offering their local, fresh, organic and nutrient-dense products!

I will check back in later this weekend and give you any updates on vendors, new products and perhaps report on my experience with Kohlrabi!
This week, be sure and check out the organic, free trade coffee, roasted right here in Lilburn! The Roastin’ Fool’s Vigilance Roast is superb; just the right balance of flavor with a wonderful creamy finish! I won’t drink any other coffee — try it and you will understand my enthusiasm!

I had a GREAT breakfast this morning and every single product was purchased at Market: Vigilance Coffee from The Roastin’ Fool, milk in my coffee from Johnston Family Farm, a fritatta made with eggs and Hot Breakfast Sausage from Heritage Farm, onions, broccolini and spinach from Doug’s Garden Produce Box, a slice of Spelt toast with a dollop of Blackberry Jam from My Daily Bread! We are so blessed to have such wonderfully fresh food available to us from local Farmers/Growers and Artisans!

Mary sends her best from a vineyard somewhere in California! You will see her at Market on Thursday! It will be good to have her back!
