Dear Market Customer -

Market really is open now. When I switched from sending the entire market listings out to just a link for you to click on, it no longer automatically makes everything “live”. It is a manual step I have to do, and now I’ve done it. So sorry about that – thanks for your patience..once again, ya’ll are awesome!

MARKET NEWS
My sincerest apologies for the late opening of market. Two of my little granddaughters are visiting this week and I soooo forgot what day it is! Please enjoy the market, and I will try to have a little news on Sunday morning!

Our market listings are growing, and I know this makes for a memory-hogging email, so I thought I would add the market link here, instead of including all of the listings. I hope this is helpful for you.

CSA Farmers Market:  Garlic Scapes

A couple of the growers grow garlic. Each year they plant the garlic in the fall and cover it with a heavy layer of chopped straw. Once the snow melts in the spring one of the first green plants to be seen is the garlic which pushes it’s way up through the chopped straw. This year since it was so cold I did not have the patience to see if the garlic plants were coming through the mulch so I dug a little to see if any was growing and sure enough there were some green plants. The straw not only acts as an insulator from the cold it also helps keep the weeds down and it also insulates the ground from the heat of summer.
At about this time of year the garlic creates a center stem that curls in a circle. This stem is where the seeds are going to be produced; although instead of allowing the plant to go to seed we cut the stems and these stems are called Garlic Scapes.
In many other countries Garlic Scapes are considered the best part of the garlic. In this county we tend to think the garlic bulbs that grow in the ground are the best part of the plant. The bulbs are usually harvested in about August when it is hot and the plants turn brown. Garlic scapes are now available on the website. They taste like garlic but they do not have as strong of a flavor. They can be eaten raw in salads or cooked in many different dishes. I find when I stir fry them they mellow out a little. Here is a website with recipes and good ideas of things to do with garlic scapes; Things to do with garlic scapes

When the scapes are cut from the top of the plant the plant puts its energy into the bulb which is below ground instead of the flower the scape will form which contains seeds. This gives us bigger garlic bulbs and we get tender tasty scapes.

Champaign, OH:  Summer Nights

Summer loving had me a blast ohh yeah
Summer loving happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be

(Grease – Summer Nights)

So, it’s that time, again…the time to announce this week’s Market Love playlist winner of the customer drawing!!

Summer Nights is just the most perfect summer song to announce the winner, to make you want to sing, to dance, to twirl all around!!

The summer, for me, was right before my freshman year in high school. I had taken a job as a summer nanny, to a family of four children, at their summer house up at Lake Erie.

It was the perfect summer solution. Cool house, on the sandy dune of the lake, I only had to watch the kids during the daytime hours, I was free to roam with the other nanny/baby sitters, that summer, in the evenings and nights.

The movie, Grease, had just come out. We spent our money on the movie, the album, and spent many evenings listening to the whole soundtrack.

We each had our own hopes of summer loves and this movie fed into the hopes and fun. We all wanted a Danny to our Sandy. We built summer friendships, bid each other goodbye once the end of August hit, and we went back to begin our lives in the fall. But, the fun of that summer remains a fun memory.

So fun, so innocent, and so perfect to usher in the next playlist winner!

This week’s winner is….JoAnn Staten!!

Thank you, everyone, for all of the positive feedback on the fun of the Market Love playlist. Another winner will happen, next week!!

Peace and Love,
Cosmic Pam

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of June15 2014

Late reminder for tomorrow’s market day here at the farm. Yes I do have strawberries, not too many but will be selling on first come basis.

Regret to say I have decided to cancel the Strawberry Solstice potluck scheduled for this sunday. I have been mentioning it in each weekly newsletter for a month but now I must be realistic; between my slightly broken hand and Cami’s leg, we’re not really up for the preparations.
I know a couple of families were looking forward to coming, but I can arrange something else later in the summer or early fall.

Lots of chard, beets beet tops, lettuce, rhubarb, eggs, and more.

Anyone interested in a half or quarter beef? I noticed today that a couple of steers look quite plump.

Healthy Eating,
Ian and Camelia

Martin's Farmstand:  Strawberries

The first picking for u-pick strawberries starts at 7 AM Saturday June 21. There is a lot of red berries in the field today (wednesday) already so the picking should be real good by Saturday. We also are starting now to pick for the stand. The peak season will be next week and the following week.

The fields are located behind our stand at 11 Needham Road, Potsdam.

Our picking hours are 7-11 am and 2-6 pm or until the field is picked. We start back over the field every Monday at 7 am, Wednesday at 2pm (no morning picking Wednesday)and Saturday at 7 am. We are open on the inbetween days if we have not finished the patch the day before. These picking days repeat every week.
U-pick price is $1.30 per lb. Please bring your own containers. We weigh your containers when you come and then again after you are finished.
We also have picked berries on the stand as the supply lasts for $3.75 a quart. If you take 10 or more they are $3.00 a quart on days that strawberries are abundant.
I also offer share picking, you take one home for each two you pick for us. Daniel
