WINTER WONDER”…
Message from Jennifer @ Sandspur Farm:
" This winter has been different, at first I was mad and upset with crops being ruined when some were reaching their prime. To see turnips shatter like glass from being frozen is ugly. But then I changed my mind. Without winter, pests in the garden would continue, there would never be an end to their cycle. So now I am happy to say that winter is not all bad. It’s the reset button for growing things. I’ve included some quotes I found online. The most important is the Bible verse from Deuteronomy 11:13-15. It says “It shall come about, if you love the Lord your God that He will give the rain for your land in its season that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your oil. He will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.”
Our ancestors didn’t have greenhouses back in the 17 & 1800s, they grew what they could during the spring and summer and stored for winter. To them winter was horrible. We have so many luxuries in life to be thankful for. Giving our lands a rest period or at least a slower pace, isn’t all bad."
Thanks Jennifer for sharing your optimism & farmer’s perspective!

1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon heaping of cumin
1 teaspoon heaping of coriander
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Carolina Foothills, SC:  Cold Months

http://carolinafoothills.locallygrown.net/market

Good morning folks ,

Brrr…..cold! Starting a fire and holding a warm cup of Southern Pecan from our mountain roaster ,‘Jumpin Goats Coffee Roasters ’.. Really really good. Robust with hints of pecan. Not artificially flavored ( of course)! Just a good cup of Joe! And to add my own kind of good I put in the Chocolate Brownie Cocoa also from Jumpin Goats Coffee Roasters. Let’s just say it’s like that really good mocha you paid too much for. Only you do it yourself! For way less!

As always I buy most of my food here! It just makes more sense to get food from my local farmers. I’m eating huge salads every night thanks to Leah Lake Farm! Lettuces are beautiful and tasty and the beets are so good! Thank you to this farm for providing this even through these cold spells! Quite impressive!

I visited Sylvan Falls Mill recently. Lovely Bed & Breakfast! If you haven’t tried their Breads, Muffins and lots of other baked goods do it now. They also offer *Stone milled Grits and Flours

I’m going to get back to sipping my Southern Pecan Mocha. Enjoy you day!

Remember you can order anytime day or night till Monday 4 pm. http://carolinafoothills.locallygrown.net/market

Carolina Foothills, SC:  MARKET IS OPEN!!!!!!

Hello all,

Well big things are afoot.

My husband and I have just gotten into buying storage units at auction and it became very clear rather quickly that I was going to need a place to start selling.

There is a place right down the road from my house that just began late last year called Red Rooster Jockey Lot.

I paid to have a room on the inside of the building and as a result now have a venue to also display for carolinafoothills also the people who who run the business will be giving Tony’s Pizza here in Liberty all of our info and they have agreed to hand out 8000 fliers for us.

I have high hopes that this will bring in both new customers and new vendors.

Take Care and as always be safe and eat well,

Susan.

Augusta Locally Grown:  THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN

WE GOT IT GOING ON!!!

THUR, JAN 22 — FRUIT & VEGGIE RX PROGRAM … We are thrilled to be part of something pretty amazing: the Fruit & Veggie Rx Program in Harrisburg! ALG has partnered with Harrisburg Family Health Care, Good Neighbor Ministries, Icebox Ministries, Slow Food CRS, Wholesome Wave Georgia, Veggie Truck Market farmers, GRU-MCG student volunteers, local volunteer physicians, and Emory University to start this summer. The program will prescribe locally-grown fruits and veggies, through a healthcare setting, to enrolled mothers and their children at-risk of diet-related diseases, weekly for five months. This is the FIRST such program of its kind for Wholesome Wave in Georgia. Yep! Not Atlanta, not Savannah, not Athens, not Macon … yes Augusta!!! Coalition members will roadtrip this coming week to firm up program design. Woot woot! To read more about this coolness, visit www.wholesomewave.org/our-initiatives/fruit-and-vegetable-prescription-program.

SAT, JAN 24 – 100 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT … Join us for a Day of Service on Saturday, January 24. We’ll be putting in more raised beds throughout Harrisburg. We’ve put in 42 so far … with 58 more to go! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org if you can help.

We’ll provide the morning break food for participants at this wonderful event. Hugs to ALG board member Laurie Ritchie for baking blueberry scones, and to Helms College Culinary students for baking the biscuits. One more volunteer is needed to help serve the food from 8am-12noon on Friday, Jan 30. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help. Tickets for the event are still for sale at www.tedxaugusta.com.

MON, FEB 2 – WTF* LOCAL FOOD FILM & MEDIA SERIES … Join us for a monthly media showing of the deeply significant and often alarming issues facing our modern food culture. The series will be “Stone Soup” style … you bring a seasonal ingredient; we’ll throw it in the pot and eat together. First up: an audio lecture on “glyphosate” from a seasoned, activist farmer. Hugs to AGL volunteer Shannon Williams for helping to head this up. Go Shannon! Location TBA. *WTF = We Trust (our) Farmers.

TUES, FEB 17 – EHS STEPS INTO WELLNESS: HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIRALG will host a seasonal foods education booth at Evans High School for CCBOE employees. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org if you can help.

We’ll need several volunteers at this wonderful setting in Keysville, GA. Hugs to Chef Megan Alig of Creative Cuisine for offering her services. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help.

TUE, MAR 17 – OPENING DAY AT THE VEGGIE TRUCK FARMERS MARKET … “Dark Leafy Green St. Patty’s Market Party” is what we’re calling our opening day festivities this season. THUR, APR 2 – OPENING DAY AT THE EVANS TOWNE FARMERS MARKET … We’ll be taking vendor applications for this market starting next week! Visit www.evanstownefarmersmarket.com for our guidelines.
