Got to get you into my life, into my life
Got to get you into my life, into my life

I was alone, I took a ride

Ev’ry single day of my life

Market News

In all the hustle and bustle of back to school week, I completely missed getting a letter written to you all. So, I’ll just open the market and let you all get to the great selection of goodies our famers have made available for us this week.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Champaign, OH:  Market Bag Of Tricks

It’s always good to continue to pull new things out of your bag of tricks. Last week, we added new vendors with new items, and this week, we see new items from our long time vendors…

We have white peaches from Champaign Berry!! Cathy told me that this will be the last of their peach season, but that their berries will be coming on, again, quickly!

Bev Littler of Littler Farms has added gluten-free chocolate chip cookies!

And, an assortment of tomatoes have been added by Hippie and the Farmer! And, don’t forget, the limited edition of the mixed produce box from Hippie and the Farmer!! Organically grown, just not organically certified, with a box of farm fresh goodness…not overwhelming in size, just a whole lot of flavor and variety, coming to you, just one field away!

We also are talking with your favorite, Stillhaven, about returning with a variety of herbs, and we talked with Rocky Ridge who will be adding duck eggs, in the near future!!

Women That Farm needed to take a slight break from the action but will be back after we see the arrival of Brandi’s baby, and they are able to get back to our market!

End Of The Road will be back, but right now, like most of us, have fought the dry, hot summer, their demands from their own CSA boxes, and their time that is being spent with getting the Miami County Locally Grown market up and running!

Brad Gregg is with us but won’t be around for long…his sweet corn is amazing, so get it while you can!! His exotic peppers are crazy, and again, won’t be around for long!

Swisher Hill Herbs is on vacation mode for the time being!

We now have MUSHROOMS…go, try, enjoy!!!

Our new local honey is now offered on our market!! I made Cosmic Flower Powers for breakfast, this morning, and used a bit of Dave’s honey…so good!

And, on top of the new items in our market bag of tricks, we have all of our old favorites, we are a vendor rich/product rich market…right here, right for the taking, and so easy to make local your way of eating!

Our market will be open until Tuesday night…why not open up your own bag of tricks to see what you need to order…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Recipes

Tomato Vinaigrette

This also makes a great sauce for pasta, or a dipping sauce for bread!

Makes about 1 cup
8 ounces very ripe tomatoes
1/4 cup sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, grated
1/4 cup olive oil

Halve the tomatoes. Squeeze the halves into a fine-mesh strainer set over a bowl. You should get about 1/2 cup of tomato juice and pulp.

Add the vinegar, honey, 1/2 teaspoon salt, mustard, and garlic to the bowl and whisk to combine. While whisking, slowly pour in the oil. Continue to whisk until emulsified. Taste and season with more salt as needed.

Serve over arugula with cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, and feta.

Recipe Notes
Storage: This vinaigrette can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Let sit at room temperature 10 minutes and re-whisk before serving.

HI EVERYONE!

An often-overlooked category in The Market is Prepared Foods. The Harvest is really fortunate to have a truly excellent source of such products as Organic Veggie Cream Cheese Spread, Greek Pasta Salad, and Hot Pepper Peach Cheese Logs. These are foods that are made fresh to your order by MY DAILY BREAD,and I can tell you unequivocally that they are excellent! So it’s very exciting for me when they decide to do something new, and what could possibly be better than Fresh Organic Salsa! I ordered mine as soon as I saw it was available, and I encourage you to get in on what I know is only a seasonal treat, and while you’re at it, check out all of MY DAILY BREAD’s other treats in the Prepared Foods section, their awesome Jams, Jellies, and Preserves in the Processed Foods section, and of course their wonderful Breads, Cookies, and Desserts, many of them organic and gluten-free in the Baked Goods section.

MY DAILY BREAD also has added Asian Long Beans to the Vegetable section, joining new Peppers and Eggplants from LEILANI’S.

THE MARKET WILL OPEN Sunday night at 8pm!
