Miami County Locally Grown:  We are Open for Orders! And Tonight's Featured Vendor is...

D and D Potato!!

Who doesn’t love potatoes, arguably the most versatile veggie anywhere? We’re lucky that Dane and Donna of D and D Potato specialize in these adored spuds, with three great varieties sure to please everyone.

Potato farmers for seven years, much to the pleasure of the community palate, as a kid Dane helped milk cows with his grandpa and has wanted to farm ever since. He said after he got married, he grew a few potato mounds in a garden and they turned out so well he told his wife “We are growing potatoes!”

Potatoes are a demanding crop, consuming plenty of time and space… and anyone who hand plants, digs and sorts their potatoes for bagging must love what they do, which it is evident in D and D’s products.

It’s no wonder their potatoes taste so happy… their home sits so far back from the road it is utterly peaceful and quiet. Cognizant of his conventional, spray happy neighbors, Dane plants around his potato patch a 40-foot buffer of red clover, both beautiful and practical, doing as much as he can to ensure his naturally grown potatoes stay healthy and chemical free.

Committed to supporting locally grown products and appreciating their importance, Dane has been a vocal supporter of this market from its inception, including our pure definition of “local” – no reselling!

They currently offer on the market not only their Reds, Yukon Golds, and Purples by the pound, but also a colorful marble mix of all three varieties. Those small round potatoes are my favorite – how could life be easier than tossing those in the crockpot, or pulling a jar of marble potatoes you’ve canned from the pantry shelf? No wonder they continue to be so popular!

The market will be open until 8pm Sunday!!

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Aug 21 2016

The advanced orders for roasting chickens have been picked up, there are lots left, whole, halved or quartered. Twelve weeks old, about 6lb avg weight, raised on pasture with organic grain rations. Very flavourful.

The veggie garden is lush with bounty, it’s a long list: cuccumber, young chard, beet root, beet tops, green onions, leek, rhubarb, kale, arugula, tomatoes, string beans (yellow, green and purple varieties), potatoes (cobbler and purple), garlic, and herbs: chives dill, spearmint, bronze fennel and lovage.

I have spared y’all any climate news of late, as I shift my perspective again to stay current with developments. The pace of climate upsets is increasing, as you would expect with any natural system.

But here’s a sample of the main dilemna of our time, being ‘what can one person do?’ to make a difference in the climate crisis that is upon us.

Jane Braaten was traveling in India and was confronted at one village with this graffiti: Protect the earth. Live simply. Act with compassion. Our future depends on it.. Then upon returning to the United States she writes, "I’m wondering what cultural, social or political resources we have, especially at the local level, that can help us to see ourselves as part of a common effort to ensure everyone is taken care of. I’ve seen and heard of towns and small cities that have strong social service networks, engaged congregations, and municipal leaders who pay attention to quality of life and stresses in the community. I still think we could do a better job of spreading the spirit of openness and compassion, of taking more responsibility for the conditions we live in, and of building our stamina for participation and engagement. Only through building some trust and confidence in each other, sharing burdens, and making sure that all our needs are met, will we truly find the motivation to protect the earth.

How far is this from our situation in the Hamilton foodshed?

We are taking reservations for the Natural Cheesemaking workshop Nov 11-12. Please tell if you’re interested.

Bulk Chicken Pack is now available for Pre-order. This is a 50# package of whole chickens! Some of you asked for this going into last winter. Greg has made it happen for us, so be sure and get your orders in! Since this amount may be a bit much for some, there will be sign-up sheets at Market this week to share a package. We will only be doing 1/2 splits! The cost will be $125.00 for 25#’s of whole chickens! Heritage Farm has their own Market as well as being part of several traditional Farmers Markets. There are a limited number available! Be sure and take advantage of this great opportunity!

Also, Greg has listed Ginger Gold Apples! We had these last year and they are wonderful. Crisp and not as tangy as Granny Smith! They are local, un-sprayed and from a Farmer Greg knows and trusts! Delicious!
