The Market closes at 8:00pm!

I cannot stress enough the need for us to meet minimum ordering amounts for delivery to be feasible for our Farmers as well as to keep the Market open! As of this writing we are less than 1/3 of the way to minimum. If you haven’t ordered, please click the link below and place your order now! We appreciate your support of our LOCAL Farmers and of the Market!

…a few notes…

Ancient Awakenings has fermented offerings this week. Next availability will be November 17th!

My Daily Bread has their yummy offerings on the Market this week. Dabrielle has set aside time and resources to bake for our Market on a weekly basis. If we are not able to make a minimum amount, it is not financially sustainable for My Daily Bread and we will lose our place in getting our orders filled. Check out their Organic Bakery items and get your orders placed before Market close!

Doug’s Garden has listed Sweet Potato Leaves. Doug called and said he had heard that they are a delicious GREEN! (and goodness knows, we need some greens) He tried several ways of fixing them and has assured me that they are VERY similar to Spinach! I did order some this past week and as Doug said, they are very Spinach-like! I have eaten them in a salad as well as sauteed! Good option for greens!

Fry Farm has items listed on the Market this week.

Broccoli
Butternut Squash
North Georgia Candy Roaster Squash
Wild Garden Kale Mix
French Breakfast Radishes
Hakurei Turnips (with or without greens)
Hinona Kabu Turnips

Pre-Orders for Holiday Meats! Hams, Turkeys, Turkey Breasts are all available from the Hutchins Family of Heritage Farm! These options will NOT be available for long and are only available as Pre-Orders! Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Heritage Farm also has some Produce listed:

Arugula
Watermelon Radishes
Okra (sold out)
Apples (these are wonderful!!)

Grow with the Flow has the following items listed:

Arugula
Mixed Greens
Kale
Mustard Greens
Radishes
Tatsoi
Hakurei Turnips

Milk Customers

For those of you who order MILK — Sam makes a 375 mile round trip to ensure that we have fresh milk. Our milk orders are down drastically from last year and this is becoming a burden to Sam. Financially it is not sustainable. In lieu losing this wonderful product and resource permanently, we are discussing going to an every other week delivery. Cows do not stop giving milk because our orders are down – consistency in ordering is important! I will keep you informed as news becomes available!

Market News

If you’ve been wanting to get much more closely involved in the local food system but don’t want to become a farmer yourself, here’s a great opportunity for you. The Athens Farmers Market is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Market Manager. Their current manager Jan Kozak is leaving the post in mid-December, and the AFM is hoping to install a new manager within the next 3-4 weeks in order for them to have a chance to shadow Jan for a few market days. You can find an amazingly detailed job description at https://gallery.mailchimp.com/9a03e418e527211fc69bf5b73/files/AFM_Manager_Job_Description.pdf. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. If you or anyone you know is qualified and interested in applying, please send a resume and cover letter to marketmanager@athensfarmersmarket.net.

Fall seems to be the traditional time for wanting to go visit a farm, maybe to pick apples or to find a good pumpkin, or to get lost in a corn maze. It’s true that most if not all of the agro-tourism spots nearby are conventional farms, but don’t let that stop you from paying them a visit, especially if you have children (or can borrow some for the day). So many kids think that their food supply begins at the grocery store, and farms are just something that they read about in picture books. Take them out and show them that farms are real things, that they’re worth visiting, and that they are near where they live. Farms shouldn’t be exotic places, relegated to storyland places like “The Dell” and “California”.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Parmesan Roasted Zucchini
from Ina Garten’s book Cooking for Jeffrey

This recipe is really adaptable – it can feed two or feed a crowd. It can be hot or room temperature!

Serves 6 to 8
6 medium zucchini (2 1/2 to 3 pounds total)
Good olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley leaves
2 tablespoons julienned fresh basil leaves
1/2 cup freshly grated Italian Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup panko (Japanese bread flakes)

Preheat the oven to 425°F.

Trim the stem end of the zucchini, cut them in half lengthwise, and scoop out a small channel of seeds with a regular teaspoon. Place the zucchini in one layer on a sheet pan, brush generously all over with olive oil, and turn the zucchini cut-side down. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and roast for 12 to 15 minutes, until just tender but still firm when tested with the tip of a small paring knife.

Meanwhile, make the bread crumbs. In a medium bowl, combine the garlic, parsley, basil, Parmesan, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Add the panko and 3 1/2 tablespoons of oil and mix well.

Turn the zucchini cut-side up and spoon a heaping tablespoon of the panko mixture evenly on each zucchini. Bake for another 8 to 10 minutes, until the panko is crispy. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature.

Make ahead: Prepare the zucchini and the crumb mixture separately and refrigerate for up to a day. Roast before serving.

BOO-tiful New Veggies for Fall!

HI EVERYBODY!

Hope you’re enjoying this weather as we approach Halloween with some scary-good Veggies! Tomatillos are coming in now (yes, really). This is a perfect opportunity to try your hand at Salsa Verde the way it’s supposed to be. Easy, too! And you might want to kick in some Spring Purple Onions. These are basically green onions, but the bulb and first couple of inches are purple. Excellent taste, great color in salads and stir fry. And speaking of Stir Fry, Snow Peas and Bok Choi are both available, though the Peas are only in for 2-3 weeks, so get them while you can.

In other news, MY DAILY BREAD is out of town this week for a wedding so no Baked Goods (rats!).

Finally, we have quick-frozen wild-caught Georgia White Shrimp, normally $13, this week just $10 a pound! Take advantage of this great price for this unbelievably delicious Shrimp while you can!
