MISC MARKET NOTES

Early Spring Thoughts

And here we are two weeks later with a glorious spring like day – I hope you have enjoyed it as much as possible. Since it’s official that Sand Mountain Sam saw his shadow we should be able to enjoy more warmer days going forward.

Retro picnic

We love Phil and Sam and our other cultural icons that encourage us to wait out winter weather, but there are actually other actual “things” in nature that tell us what to expect. Phillip Carter whom many may remember as a local extension agent is now a State Bee Inspector recently wrote, “Despite some very cold weather it appears that it hasn’t slowed the honey bees down very much. Here in the southern part of the state we are seeing plenty of drone brood so they are already gearing up for swarming so be prepared.” In bee language this means that the bees are gearing up for warm weather.

Retro picnic

The “bullet” shaped cells on the right house developing drone larve raised in preparation for spring honeybee reproduction and ultimately honey production.

While observing the inside of a honeybee hive done only by a few, there are other easier and more accessible ways to watch for spring. Old Farmer’s Almanac says to simply observe the buds on a tree. This editor had a college assignment to do just that. While there was still snow on the ground we had to choose a 6 – 8 inch section of a tree of our choice and draw it once a week for 6 or 8 weeks. By the end of the assignment I couldn’t wait to see how my little twig had changed in such a short time.

Lastly, in our household we are content knowing that the forces that govern our weather patterns are pretty much beyond man’s control. We all know about sunspsots, but how often do we stop to realize that solar flares affect the temperature on planet earth? Heat from those events cannot travel through space to warm the earth but that infrared radiation . . . oh yeah. Given recent solar activity (remember that some cell towers went out temporarily a few weeks back?) should we be surprised for an earlier spring?

Folklore, observation or hard science, we’re thankful for the change of seasons regardless and rejoice in the beautiful days to be a part and partner with God’s creation.

The Wednesday Market:  The Wednesday Market Celebrates 13 years!

Good afternoon!

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your order by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday. See the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Did you know that The Wednesday Market celebrated it’s 13th anniversary this week? Every year, on or near the Market’s anniversary, I like to recap the reasons for the Market’s founding, so let’s take a look back at our mission.

On January 26, 2011, The Wednesday Market in Zebulon opened to serve Pike County and neighboring communities. From the beginning of our creation, our purpose was to provide the freshest, locally grown produce, fruit and good food available.

We believe that small, diverse, family-owned farms contribute to society’s overall health, and the reasons for buying locally are even more relevant today than they were 13 years ago. By supporting The Wednesday Market, you:

Enhance your local economy – By purchasing produce and other items from local growers you are providing stability to your local economy through the support of local businesses.

Save natural resources – Buying locally makes you an invaluable link in the process of saving resources such as fossil fuels and packaging materials. Also, we are right here in your community, so the expense of transportation and delivery is kept to a minimum.

Provide learning opportunities – Locally Grown supporters provide member growers the means to help educate our community about the importance of sustainable agriculture.

Support a way of life – The number of small farms in the United States has decreased dramatically in the last decade. Please help us preserve an honest and worthy means of making a living.

During 2022 the U.S. economy was hit with inflation like we have not experienced in 40+ years. While the Federal Reserve has tamed inflation somewhat throughout 2023, grocery prices are still higher than they were pre-pandemic. The crisis of inflation attracted many new customers for The Wednesday Market.

Whether we are being pinched by inflation or not, let us support our local agricultural economy. Buy from local farmers and encourage your friends and neighbors to do so, too. Consider planting your own gardens and sharing the bounty with others. Tell everyone you know that you order from The Wednesday Market. Help us attract more producers to sell through us.

Our managers are volunteers, as we have been from day one. Without our teamwork and dedication, the Market simply would not happen. We thank our retired Market founders and retired volunteers for their vision and dedication to The Wednesday Market mission: Anna Evans, Brenda Fayard, Irma Wing, and Betty Dean. In 2023, we lost our beloved manager Sharon Fox. Her sudden death was a tremendous shock. We know that Sharon would have wanted the Market to continue. We are happy to report that the Market is thriving!

As of January 1, 2024, the Market moved back to our original location on Concord Street in Zebulon. Now that we are much more visible, our customer base is growing. We are grateful to our Farmers and Customers for your support and look forward to continuing to serve you!

Your Sunshine Girls,
Beverly Walter and Nelda Miller

P.S. If you have questions about your order or if you need to contact us, please start with Nelda, as she is our primary market manager. I (Beverly) am also available, but I may not reply immediately. You may contact us by text, email, or phone call.

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. in Clayton, Clarkesville, or Gainesville.

If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION after you finish the checkout process, then your order is NOT complete. Head back to the market page, and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.

Once you place an order, be on the lookout for the order reminder email on Wednesday with further pickup and payment notes. Thanks for your support!
