GFM :  Things are picking up!!

It’s hard to believe we are already into June. Where is the time going? Seems every week goes by faster and faster. In the gardens, tomatoes are growing, beans are sprouting, grapes are coming along. I’m told we will have Cherries at the market this week, and lots of lettuce and eggs. Apple Town Bagels will not be at market this weekend, so if you want some of those, please place your order before Wednesday, so I can pick them up Thursday when I meet with Kelly.

Looking forward to seeing all of you Saturday!

In order for delivery to our Market to be financially feasible for our Farmers and Artisans, we must meet minimums for those that travel farther to provide for us! Milk and Bakery items fall into this category! Members will be notified if minimums are not met.

Take me to the Market.

Thank you for your support! See you at Market on Wednesday!

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  JNA Farm Market closes at 8:00pm tonight

The biggest challenge this week is staying in budget considering all the great offerings. It is going to be easy to eat all your veggies this week! Then treat yourself to some of Farm Fresh Foods, strawberry or blueberry breads.
We will have samples of Good Shepherd Herbals, Wise Woman Tea (men can drink it also) and fresh spearmint tea.
Look forward to seeing you Wednesday.

Martin's Farmstand:  June 2

The online farmers market is open for orders. We have some really lovely lettuce heads right now. They are a bargin at $1.25 each. I just picked the first bucketful of zuchini out of the hoophouse. We also are picking cucumbers now. The plants in the greenhouse are at there full beauty right now- as pretty as the seed catalogue pictures. If you get a chance stop by and take a look at this lovely scene.
It is normally the last week of May or first week of June when the strawberries hit full bloom. They are at full bloom right now so I expect to start picking berries at normal time. (Peak berries should be last week of June.) Daniel

Searcy, AR:  tuesday market

Last Tuesday was a little wet with all the rain, but we managed to muddle through. I just want to remind everyone that the market is open until 10 pm.

Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for June 4, 2014n

Hey Local Food Lovers,

What a great weekend. It was certainly a good one to enjoy. And I got to do some of it on a bicycle. Munching now on what may be getting close to the end of strawberry season. My, hasn’t that been fun! The rising tide and ebb of a select number of foods is fascinating to watch. Spring is my favorite for short sweet treats like that. Asparagus, cabbage (can’t wait to try Taylor Creek’s), carrots, cilantro, beets, swiss chard, kohlrabi, even garlic scapes. And oh how I love the exotic fennel. Time to whip up a dish with that this week.

Speaking of exotic, I love ethnic markets in the mountains. They are always family affairs, and that makes it better already. The one I popped in on today after biking up and down hills had some homemade fried plaintains. I experimented with a cane juice to drink (drinks like basil seed and aloe vera are also worth having). If you can find the Cornelia Post Office just look up the hill.

So many things I could talk about. Most everybody knows that Gainesville is gonna start this FRIDAY right? We feel like we are about to go out on a first date… and we already know it’s gonna be good!

To all the Gainseville local food lovers checking us out, thanks for finding us, that is super cool. It’s a kind of crazy idea for a market we know, but we’ve been at it now and it’s worked great for 4 years. Try it for yourself. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty perfect. And by collaborating, farmers have been able to transport a lot more food to a lot of very loyal customers these last many years.

Transport is a weird concept to apply to our food but there it is, every bite we eat gets transported. Which is why closer is better. It’s literally fresher! And with the Georgia Mountains Farm Tour coming up in just one month you can taste how much fresher by visiting some of Locally Grown’s farms. Transport yourself to your food for a change. Early bird pricing for your whole car is available for just two more weeks and 2 days ($30/2 days/ whole car), so what you waiting for. Plop it in your cart now and you’ll get your strawberry bumber sticker and your strawberries in the same week.

Since this is the last message before ordering starts Friday, and since you can only kick off a brand new market once, now is a great time to forward this to a friend (near Hall County) and tell them to order this FRIDAY. 20 orders would be a cool number to hit. And if you like us on the FB, that could be what we need. It’s cool to be at the first one, and we’re gonna try and make it great. Come help.

Gonna go stretch those calf muscles and climb in the bed, soon dreams of local food shall fall in my head.

This reminder is right onion time. Spread it around.

Thanks and EAT WELL,

Market News

Hello, and welcome to June! There’s not much new to report this week. Summer veggies are really starting to come in now, and the recent rains and cool nights have kept the spring items around a little longer. We’re at the change of the season now, and everything is very weather dependent. Just a little too much heat will end the spring items, and just not enough sun will keep the summer goodies from ripening. Right now, it looks like we’re getting things just right for both, but all that could change a week from now.

We’ve depleted our supply of salmon and halibut from Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon. Doug and his family are now on their boats, catching fish by hand while the summer weather makes it possible for them to do so. We may not get a fresh supply until the boats get put back in the dock at the end of August, but there’s a chance they’ll send us some mid-summer ahead of their own return. I’ll keep you informed.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at city hall. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is open throughout the week here in Athens, and you can find more information about them here: www.athenslandtrust.org. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned have yet to open for the season, so far as I know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Farm Where Life is Good:  Last minute tomato plants, anyone?

273 tomato plants later…

Farm Where Life is Good

The leftover cherries need a good home.

We have a handful of cherry tomato seedlings remaining after filling up the high tunnel. They are not your “Gerten” varieties nor the “Gertens” sizes, but they will grow well if treated kindly. All are indeterminate, meaning they grow until frost. It also means they do best when pruned frequently and grown in a vertical manner. They don’t have to go that way, but they can get unruly otherwise! (I am happy to train anyone who wants to learn tomato pruning. Piece of cake!)

They will come as 2 inch, naked root balls and will need to be transplanted immediately/same day as delivery. (Trim all leaves up to top cluster, plant in 6-8 inch trench, on its side with top leaf cluster just above the soil surface.)

Purple Bumblebee
Blush
Beam’s Yellow Pear

The Market has them listed under “live plants”.

Ordering will be open from Sunday morning until Monday 8pm. Get your orders in now so harvesting can begin specific to your requests.

Deliveries will be made Wednesday per usual to your chosen Dropsite Location .

Have a wonderful week, and enjoy the anticipation of homegrown tomatoes.

We hope to feed you soon!

Roger and Lara
