Champaign, OH: And there off.....
Ok customers…eight minutes ago I clicked the “enable customer ordering” button for the first time. Excited yet nervous, it is very exciting to know we are the first in the state to utilize the LocallyGrown market software. Without a local mentor or neighboring city to assist, we have been communicating with folks in Georgia to learn what to do. I want you to know it is going to be fun! We are also looking for volunteers who might like to help put orders together on Thursday afternoons. Let me know if you are interested at mctief@frontier.com. Also, something very important to share is that for the first few weeks I feel it is important to become extremely comfortable with all the programming on the system. For that reason, we will be only taking cash and checks at the market. We will be adding a credit system similar to Stripe and will eventually get to accepting EBT and other benefit programs but for now, please be prepared to pay in cash or with a check at the market. Also, if you choose to order something and do not pick it up, you will still be responsible for payment. You will not be able to order again if this is a problem. We will call to check on you if you have failed to pick your order up by 6 pm with 30 minutes left in the market. I will use the phone number supplied when you registered with the market.
On a personal note, please forgive my typo’s as this software fails to have a spell check and hasn’t that become our favorite friend? Anyway, I also often send you messages from my phone and the font is smaller than a picnic ant: no excuse, I know but please know I already have a complex about the usage of spring, sprang and sprung which I have worried about since yesterday’s blog! Enjoy the market, get to know the vendors not only at our market but at other markets throughout the county, and let’s make this a start to a wonderful friendship with each other! Happy shopping (until Tuesday evening at 8 pm) and thank you for supporting local!

Cedar Grove Farm: Cedar Grove Farm CSA Availability for May 9
Hi everyone,
Hope you enjoyed your first CSA delivery of fresh, naturally grown, produce from Cedar Grove Farm. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know. We will probably be making some small logistical changes from time to time to make things run as smoothly as possible and to make certain you are getting the best product we can deliver.
There are a few changes in availability this week. The strawberries peaked early this year due to the mild weather, so there are not enough to offer this week. We hope to have some available once or twice more before the end of the season. The first broccoli harvest was our early variety and is not available either. Two later varieties are struggling, but I am confident they will make it next week. If it would just cool down and rain once it would be a big help. Try the greens if you are really missing your broccoli – they are excellent. We are adding several new offerings to take up the slack. There are two varieties of Pac Choi available this week, as well as, sugar snap peas and Lacinato kale in good quantities and a new herb – Dill. And, the yellow granex onions are transforming from spring onions to medium bulbs.
Take a look and find your favorites. If you are picking up at Lindsey’s and have a little extra time come by and say hello at the Downtown Athens Farmers Market at Little Kings courtyard. We would love getting to know all of you.
See you at the market.
Best regards from your farmers – Jay, Dylan, Marlene and Sara.
Northeast, Ga.: Locally Grown - Availability for May 9, 2012
Hey Local Food Lovers,
*due to the time difference, market won’t open for a few hours after this post.
This is a long-distance Locally Grown post this week, as I’m half way around the world in Taiwan today. For those unfamiliar, Taiwan is a small island (smaller than Japan) just a few hundred miles off the coast of mainland China and directly across from Hong Kong. The purpose of my visit is to meet my new inlaws, enjoy a bit of a vacation, and absorb as much culture as possible.
Taiwan is well known for its food culture, and they are extremely proud of the ways that both their food and agriculture are unique from that of mainland China (by the way Taiwan is an independent nation, so don’t confuse them as part of China). One of their claims to fame that I’ve heard several times since arriving here is, “Taiwan is a Fruit Kingdom.” This means that the Taiwanese have been steadily improving the quality of their fruits here for a very long time, making each variety bigger, sweeter, better. I can attest! The pineapple is incredible, mango outstanding (don’t even imagine our sad little green mangos we get in the states), grapes, longyan, leeyanwoo, white gourd, asian pear, white peaches.
We’ve also had several feasts here at the house (I’m getting spoiled I’m afraid) that feature some of the marvelously diverse protein sources common here. There’s chicken (served cold), and beef too, but then we’ve had cuttlefish (similar to squid), whole steamed fish, goose, giant shrimp, tofu, and black eggs (they’re marinated for several days in soy sauce and spices). Then my favorite side dishes have been some completely unique mushrooms in a sauce I adore, cabbage (I love cabbage and it’s the staple vegetable here), giant chunks of bamboo shoots with a sweet mayo sauce on top (also one of my favorites), and lightly pickled cucumbers.
Street food is where it’s at here. I’ve never seen so much food available at nearly every corner, or in little shops barely wider than one garage door width. The best is fan twan, or rice ball, which can include different kinds of sticky rice rolled around pork, spicy cabbage, and this crunchy fried donut bread to give it good interior texture. For breakfast they make these things called egg pies that remind me of a breakfast burrito, as it’s a rolled up flour tortilla with egg and choice of filling (I’m a fan of the grilled pork) with a sweet sauce on top.
Here’s a shocker. Back in the states virtually every river I’ve ever been in has these little Asiatic invasive clams called corbicula. I’ve often joked about if we could only eat them. Well, of course you can. At dinner the other night they served a bowl of them, RAW, marinated in a rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and hot pepper. They’re awesome. A great little pre-dinner snack.
Speaking of snacks. Taiwan has amazing bakeries with these great little delicate cakes (like angel food) with a creamy fruit interior. Then watermelon juice and white gourd drink is readily available. Oddly, the corner 7-Eleven stores are chocked full of delicious treats, and coffee equal to our Starbucks.
I’ve only been here 3 full days, so I’d say I’m just chipping the iceberg of the foods here. Today we are travelling south to the agricultural districts of the country and will be visiting some farms later in the week, as well as some markets that specialize in farmer grown and sold food (here in the city it’s all vendors not farmers behind the booth).
Hope all is well back at home. The only announcement this week is that we’re officially starting to advertise the Georgia Mountains Farm Tour the weekend of June 30- July 1st. We’re very excited that 18 different food and farm stops are planned and we hope that individuals interested in learning about what’s going on with the local food scene in North Georgia won’t miss this best opportunity of the year to see all that we have going on in the region. The weekend passes are for an entire carload of individuals and are just $30 (before June 16th). Each weekend pass will also receive a $5 back to spend at Locally Grown or Simply Homegrown market up in Clayton. We’ve added the Farm Tour as an item to the Locally Grown menu this week so you can reserve a booklet and bumper sticker and start planning your weekend in advance. We’re hoping we’ll get those booklets back from the print shop this week and if we do you can write a separate check (or cash) when you pick up your locally grown order. If you’d like to see the full schedule the brochure can be found at www.soque.org.
That’s all I got time for today. Don’t forget to ……
EAT WELL,

Earthwind Botanicals is another awesome option for Mother’s Day – there are some great items offered this week! Lots of yummy soaps, bath, and other aromatherapy products that would make a great gift basket. Throw in a batch of Dozen Bakery cookies, a big bouquet, and Wow! Are you set or what?
The strawberries are still delicious and bountiful, but are slowly and surely on their way out for the season. It is hard to anticipate how many will be available. If it looks like we are sold out, please order some anyway and we will try to meet all the orders!
