The Market has several delicious Summer Produce and Products this week, Baked Items, House and Garden Plants and ‘Worm Castings’ for anyone who grows ground plants or potted plants…order early so you don’t miss any of your favorite things!

WELCOME A NEW GROWER…Their product will help anyone that loves growing things!

East Fork Farm/Worm castings: What are worm castings? Worm castings are an organic form of fertilizer produced from earthworms, essentially earthworm waste, otherwise known as worm poop.

Why should I purchase organic worm castings from East Fork Farm versus a big box store? East Fork Farm organic worm castings are OMRI certified, so you know you are getting a quality product with nothing added. Other worm castings might have additional ingredients added i.e., mulch, unknown soil, etc.

Benefits of using East Fork Farm organic worm castings: Worm castings contains minerals such as concentrated nitrates, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. They are 100% organic fertilizer that can increase a plant’s yield, protects both soil and plants from diseases, repel insects and help the soil retain moisture. Can be used as a top dressing, side dressing, worked into the soil or brewed into a liquid form (Worm- Tea- Ni) to water your plants.
Worm castings have a very long shelf life and never lose their potency if they are kept DRY. Once wet, the castings need to be used within 48 hrs. 100% safe to be used around pets and children. Can be used to revitalize old soil in gardens and around your household plants. East Fork Farm organic worm castings have a neutral PH of 7.0

AVALON FARMS What do you consider an insect pest? Around here I usually consider anything eating or otherwise afflicting my plants a pest and it needs to go.

It’s sort of like the old saying “anything growing in the wrong place is a weed.” You eat my plants, you die.

FOTO_20210724_155325

I discovered these very pretty caterpillars this week. They’ve been eating their way through my few celery plants, making them a pest. I started to pull them off for chicken treats but they reminded me of monarch caterpillars, so I did a little research. These bad boys (because they ate the celery) are black swallowtail caterpillars. I guess the chickens don’t need any treats today, LOL. We enjoy watching them flitting around the flowers near our porch.

FOTO_20210724_155151

Editor’s Note: Wendy isn’t the only one checking these caterpillars this week! If you find something interesting like this and want to know more Google Lens is a great smart phone app for identifying plant and animal life. Point the camera at what you wish to identify, click the button and Google will search it’s database and tell you what you’re looking at.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Martin's Farmstand:  Home again, It is pickle season.

We have all sorts of good food at the stand today. A few highlights are Dads delicious blueberries, lots of cucumbers and little pickles, beans, beets, tomatoes cabbage and all sorts of greens, lettuce and herbs.

We have a few boxes of canner tomatoes today and lots of cucumbers including little picklers available in bulk amounts.
We are home again to this wonderful green land. We traveled as a family out to the west and spent three weeks camping. We spent our time just seeing our big diverse country. The grass is a lot greener here than in Wyoming. It is good to be back on the farm and to eat good fresh produce. Daniel
