Eggplant and Other Yummies!

HI EVERYONE!

Got some wonderful-tasting Produce for you this week from LEILANI’S. First up are Eggplants. Here’s two recipe ideas: 1.) Zingy Cayenne-grilled Eggplant. You can use just about any type of Eggplant, just cut into 1/2-inch thick strips, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with cayenne pepper, coriander, and salt. 2.) Simple Ratatouille. In a skillet put 2-3 tbsp. olive oil, a thinly sliced onion, a minced elephant garlic clove, and stir until softened. Add the Eggplant and cook 7-8 minutes until soft, then add a thinly-sliced yellow Zucchini, a Bell Pepper cut into strips, a cup of chopped tomatoes, and cook 6 or so minutes until everything is tender. Season to taste with Sea Salt, black pepper, and basil (fresh if possible).

Well, that should keep you busy. Don’t forget other delectables like Okra, Yellow and Roundball Zucchini, Peppers, Squash, and other favorites. Check The Market for this week’s offerings.

What follows is perhaps the longest weblog I have ever written for The Wednesday Market. I hope that you will take the time to read it and think about what is in the food that we buy.

Who do you trust when it comes to knowing what is in the food you eat? I want to share a cautionary tale with you about what happens when we don’t know or don’t pay attention to what is in our food and what it can do to our bodies.

A few months ago, in an effort to get my son Stephen (age 12, soccer player) to drink more water, we purchased a product called “Mio.” It comes in various flavors and you add drops of it to a bottle of water. This product smells really good and turns the water pretty colors, kind of like the Kool Aid that I grew up drinking. Indeed, Stephen did drink more water while using this product.

Flash forward to a few days ago. My son Charlie, age 7, decided to add some “Mio” to his water bottle. By bedtime, he had broken out in a rash. We dosed him with some zyrtec and swabbed him down with some benadryl lotion to control the itching and put him to bed. I went to bed worried about my baby.

The next morning, the rash was MUCH WORSE! I took one look at him and knew we’d be spending the day at the urgent care center to have him seen about. Racking our brains trying to figure out what caused Charlie’s rash, my husband and I reviewed everything that he had eaten the previous day. The only “different” or new item that he had consumed was the “Mio.” Before we went to the doctor, we looked at the list of ingredients on “Mio” and noticed acesulfame potassium. I immediately suspected it as the culprit, because a few years ago, Charlie had reacted with a severe rash to a sulfa drug he was taking for an infected insect bite. I reasoned that acesulfame potassium is a sulfa compound and that must have caused the reaction.

The doctor confirmed our suspicions that the rash was an allergic reaction to something Charlie ate and encouraged us to make a follow up appointment with our pediatrician and to have our son seen by an allergist. We received prescriptions for a steroid and hydrocortisone cream for the itching. A few hours after the first dose of steroid, the rash began to clear. The next morning, a Sunday, my boy looked much better. On the way to church, we stopped and bought him a chocolate milk, which he promptly consumed. Then, during church, the rash reappeared with a vengeance! When we arrived home, I checked the ingredient label for the chocolate milk, and what do you think I found? Acesulfame potassium!

What is acesulfame potassium and why is it added to food? According to www.healthline.com, “Also known as acesulfame K or Ace-K, the ingredient is a calorie-free sweetener found in sugar-free products. Though it’s considered safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some are convinced it has potentially dangerous health effects. What is it? Acesulfame K is an artificial sweetener, found in a variety of foods and drinks. Alone, it’s a white crystal powder with a slightly bitter after-taste. Because of this taste, it’s often blended with other sweeteners like sucralose (used in Splenda) or aspartame (used in Equal) — both controversial in their own right. Acesulfame K can be found in soft drinks, protein shakes, drink mixes, frozen desserts, baked goods, candy, gum, and tabletop sweeteners. The FDA’s approval of Ace-K’s use in soft drinks came in 1998, increasing consumer exposure to the ingredient.”

Charlie’s exposure and reaction to acesulfame potassium was a scary experience for us. You see, two of my siblings have food allergies so severe that if they ingest one of their allergens, they suffer anaphylactic shock! I surely do want that to happen to my Charlie. I will be reading ALL processed food labels from now on to be sure they do not contain acesulfame potassium or other sulfa compounds. Furthermore, I plan to do a lot more “from scratch” cooking so that I can control what goes into the food that my family eats.

The good news is that Charlie continues to recover from his allergic reactions. He is still on steroids, and we still need to see an allergist, but to see him today, one week after his last breakout, you would never know that he was covered head-to-toe in a nasty rash.

This experience makes me even more thankful for The Wednesday Market’s network of farmers and producers. I encourage all of our customers to inform themselves about our food supply. If you know your farmer, you will know your food, and if you cook your own food, you will know exactly what’s in it!

So, you all know that your market manager, the Hippie Bakestress spends her mornings, and nights, baking. Manages markets, operates her downtown shop, serves on the local foods council, vends markets/events/festivals, spends the early part of her summers helping with Art Affair On The Square, and, most recently, helped kick off the newest business venture, Hippie and the Farmer, LLC. So, after yesterday’s market in Springfield, on the flip side of Thursday’s crazy night market down at the Springfield Farmers Market, it was no surprise that a decompressing day was in order.

I went into hiding with blankets and pillows, closed the world out, and lost myself in two of my all time favorite flicks. Almost Famous and Elizabethtown.

Elizabethtown is one of the most underrated movies, ever. But, it always speaks to me, from a time before I was the Hippie Bakestress. From a time that one girl, drove cross country, from California to North Carolina, not only for transferring to a new city as a flight attendant, (Claire is a flight attendant in the movie), but also this girl needed to take a soul journey. Finding myself, knowing myself, getting ready to take on yet another city, all needed me to just be at one with me, my car, a ton of road maps, a box of mixed tapes, and only myself for company. Drew was on the same soul quest as he took off with his dad’s ashes, in the movie.

Soul journeys…everyone needs them. I am glad that my soul journey was before Suri, before ITunes, before cell phones. I had to get lost, many, many times, on that journey. I got to watch the sunrises, and sunsets in many different settings. It was one cassette tape after another. Just the girl, her thoughts, her music, and her drive across the country, to finally meet herself, along the way.

I run my businesses in much the same way…each business is it’s own soul journey. My breads, the clothing, the Hippie of Hippie and the Farmer, the lifestyle…it all started, long, long ago on that soul searching drive.

If you ever get the time, watch the movie. Or, put the soundtrack on as your backdrop music. However you need to take your own soul journey, I strongly suggest it.

Just like this market, as it soul vibes along it’s way, each and every week. The vendors, the customers, we all have pieces and parts of our souls in this market.

Last week, I had the chance to speak about our little local market of love in an informal meeting. And, the thing that struck me, inside, as I was listening to myself speak, was how much of my soul goes into this one market. My pride, my pleasure, my weekly chance to bring you all to find that small soul in all that we have to offer, to give you, to nourish you…

Soul searching…it will take you wherever it is you desire…

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Is Open!


Good Morning ALFN Members,

This week in the market, the signs of fall are beginning to pre-announce an autumnal arrival. Turkey downpayments are up for grabs, whole forest pig is available, various lettuces and greens and back on the table, and apples are ready!!

With the welcoming of another week, we are also greeted with countless new controversies on the national and international headlines. The never-ending stream of data that sprints across our browsers challenge our own human capacity to identify and dwell on important information. For years, I only “read” the news of my village in Mozambique. I was an extreme local. The rest of the world disappeared, and I only concerned myself with the stories within a pedestrian radius. However, I don’t think this is possible anymore. All of us struggle to define important news from entertainment. All of us struggle to sift the national news into our local actions. Here is one suggestion.

I’ve been reading about about the Sioux Nation’s attempt to halt oil pipeline to be built across their territory in the Dakotas. The stand-off is once again raising conversation not only about fossil fuels, but the history of genocide in the Americas. But I live a long way off from the Dakotas. How do we integrate our own care and concern into how we live? Some of us may feel like the only way to change the world is to join the physical protest. To bounce from protest to protest across the world like a global environmental juggernaut. Of course, this isn’t possible unless protest if professionalized. I’m against the professionalization of protest. Rather, we must all find genuine, small ways to protest the incursion of cooperate interests into our own lives. We begin my starting conversations, analyzing our own consumptive actions, and infuse metaphorical protest into what we value. A plea for ecological living with the planet instead of against the planet begins by positive choices toward a vision that empowers communities to value good work in balance with local land. We can protest big oil by paying attention to our own local growers, our own waste streams and our own community organizers. In the meantime, we should find ways to all the protest from the Dakotas are important to re-describing how we narrate our own world. We don’t have to accept what will be in our headlines this week. We can choose them.

Well, Fall can be felt in the early morning hours and that is a wonderful hope of the coming of cooler days :).
Tennessee may be fickle with her weather, but she always stays true with wonderful changes of seasons. Keeps things interesting!

Linda with Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this:
The forecast for next week’s weather may be a bit optimistic, but it indicates somewhat lower temperatures. It’s time to start thinking about fall gardening. For the last couple of years, I’ve made an effort to acquire some perennial plants that bloom in August and September. Everywhere you look, you will soon see chrysanthemums. Let’s do something different this year! Currently blooming at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse are: Anemone (tall and showy in white or pink), Plumbago (very pretty blue), Toad Lily, Pincushion Flower, Hardy Begonia (lovely pink!), and several colors of Carnation. We have several types of ferns, as well as furry soft Lamb’s Ear, that will all look very nice alongside these bloomers. And in the very near future we will have in stock Flowering Cabbages. Fall gardens do not have to be all about Chrysanthemums!

Flying S Farms added Poblano have a richer and deeper pepper flavor with just a mild to moderate heat, with Scoville rating of only 250 to 1,500. The shape and open interior is perfect for stuffing, frying, salsas or when used in favorite recipes.

Casey Family Farms is still away getting cows ready to be bred and give birth, they hope to be back very soon!

We are talking with several NEW vendors this week and hope to have announcements about them very soon! SO EXCITING!
