Dothan, Alabama:  Come join us for National Dessert Day!

This and That from Ros

What a glorious day to be at the Market! I arrived at Dothan Nurseries early yesterday to find our tent surrounded by HUNDREDS (well maybe not but a LOT for sure!) of potted mums! It was such a lovely sight that the routine tasks involving bags, coolers and checking off invoices begged to wait. Add the hint of crisp in the air, sweet breezes and good company as people came and went and it was probably the most perfect place in the city.

Let me encourage you to enjoy the outdoors a little this month at the Nursery. It truly is one of the loveliest places in Dothan with no end of indoor and outdoor inspiration. Even if you don’t have a green thumb and kill plants by looking at them there are still many things to get your creative juices going. Be sure to thank JD and the staff for their vision and support of Dothan’s ONLY Sustainable Farmer’s Market.

Announcements

This Friday, November 14, is NATIONAL DESSERT DAY. We will be celebrating at the market with DESSERTS! Our vendors will be bringing sweets for you to sample. We hope you’ll join us in serious celebration of this fun national holiday! “This is a day to indulge in that wonderful, sweet ending to a meal. Desserts can be from a list including many things including cakes, cookies, jello, pastries, ice cream, pies, pudding, candy and fruit.”

We are back to a WEEKLY schedule till mid November. If you have not checked it yet, our homepage now lists the Market Schedule.

Please mark Thursday, December 1 on your calendar. That is the day for Christmas Open House and our Market vendors will be here in person with fresh seasonal produce, samples of products and a wonderful assortment of local, handmade food and gift items to get your Christmas season off to a good start.

Be sure to read our Vendor notes (below all the pies and cakes!) as some of them have special notes and new products.

Last but not least, WELCOME GINTHER FARMS! After last week’s article about how chicken molts affect egg production (explaining why several of us can’t offer many eggs!) it seemed God saw our need as the Ginther’s young chickens are blessing them, and now us prolifically! We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know this lovely family as much as we enjoy knowing them.

RICHTER FARMS “Red Wattles are an old breed of pig that was raised for flavor, not fashion. A century or two ago you’d have found Red Wattle pork on tables in New Orleans where they were a popular pig, sporting meat that could pair well with the region’s full-flavored cooking. Today you might find Red Wattle in a few restaurants in New York and a couple other lucky cities. There has been almost no supply for home cooks.” Zingermans

SANDSPUR FARMS “We hope that when you taste our pork that you can taste the difference that humanely raised pork makes in the meat. We enjoy pork tasting like pork used to taste. And hope you do too. Since Friday is National Dessert Day, and being hog farmers, we will have samples of our “Pig Pickin’ Cake.” Orders of $25 or more gets you a special dessert bag! You don’t want to miss this! Also, be sure and look at our dinner & breakfast meat bags.”

Lake Placid Online Farmer's Market:  Reminder: New Payment Method for Market

Hi everyone,

In my haste to send out the October blog post, I forgot to mention that we are switching payment methods. We will be using Square for the Market, which means that instead of your credit card being charged automatically when orders are closed after pick up, you will bring a credit card with you for pickup and run it through the system. This is a lot easier from an accounting perspective for us and hopefully will be easier for you too…not only will you know when the payment is coming through, but Square offers the option of texted or emailed receipts. If you have any questions, please let me know. Look forward to seeing you!

Best,
Christie

Lake Placid Online Farmer's Market:  October Market Open!

Hello everyone,

Although it has felt like summer the past few days, it’s still October…and time for the October Market!

We are happy to welcome Adirondack Made to the market, selling Maple Syrup and rustic wood products! All latter products are made primarily of materials harvested from their tree farm, and all the wood work is done on-site. The syrup is produced without the use of plastic tubing (instead sap is hand carried) and in an incredibly sustainable way to make a pure and delicious maple syrup. You can read more about their production methods at their website, https://www.madebytheadirondacks.com/.

Also added to the market this month is produce like peppers, eggplants, beets, and more. This is a great time to stock up on Fall and Winter staples!

As always, please email me with any questions!

Best,
Christie

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!
