Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

I am just floored as I look out the window this morning and look at the snow flurries. UGH!! It is March and I want to plant outside and Mother Nature does not care!!
Oh well! I guess I will just rest a bit more this morning before going to stoke the fire in the greenhouse again.
See you on Thursday,

Market News

If you got a Srping Break, I hope you had a good one! Me, I’ve got a regular 9-5, and stayed in town and enjoyed the quiet. That was nice.

The big news this week is the immenent cold snap about to hit. If you hadn’t heard, we’re goping to get at least three nights this week well below freezing. It’ll be in the low-to-mid 20s Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and could get down into the teens in outlying areas. It’s not unusualy to get cold nights this time of year — our average last frost day isn’t until mid-April — but given how unseasonably warm it has been, this will hit us hard. Not only have the fruit trees bloomed, they’ve already begun setting fruit. Spring veggies, including leafy greens, like to grow slow with thick leaves in the cool air, and that thinckness helps them survive cold nights. But in the heat, they grow fast sand thin, and have much less natural defences against freezes.

Our growers are scambling, trying to protect what they’ve got growing. They’ve estimated what they’ll have for us on Thursday, but please be understanding if their estimates aren’t as accurate as usual. A few degrees one way or another can mean the difference between getting through ok and total losses.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in April, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
