Growing Season Update

Plants waiting to go into the hoop-house at White Pine Farm.
There must be a turtles nest in the hoop-house because the babies are emerging.
This baby was found this week.

Maple Syrup Season

It appears the famous Groundhog was WRONG (again) this year! Spring has come a bit early and that is shifting our maple syrup producers into high gear. With these warm days and cool nights, it’s the perfect weather to start catching the sap run. Did you know that it takes about 40 gallons of raw maple sap to get 1 gallon of finished syrup? That’s A LOT of effort…just do that math!

While maple products taste amazing, they’ve got a lot of powerful health benefits, too. Don’t you want some extra nutrients such as B-Vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and zinc? Yes, Please!

Here is a fabulous maple granola recipe from Koilene Law of Law Family Farms, producers of some of the syrup for CSA Farmers Market:

Recipe for maple granola
In bowl combine
1/4 cup olive oil
2/3 cup maple syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup lightly chopped almonds

These cucumbers are GREAT for juicing and gives you that summertime fresh flavor. Juice Thaw 1 cucumber. Juice cucumber, lemon and ginger/garlic cloves for a wonderfully fresh and nutritious beverage you can enjoy anytime of the day. Tzatziki Sauce is another use for the frozen cucumbers. Recipe 1 Thaw the cucumber, chop and strain. Use a food processor or hand mix the strained chopped cucumber with 2 cups plain greek yogurt, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 4 cloves pressed garlic, 1/3 cup chopped dill, salt and pepper to taste. Recipe 2 You can also make a juice and add small amounts to the yogurt until you have the consistency you want. I thaw and juice the cucumber, lemon and garlic. If you have fresh dill throw that in the juicer too. Salt to taste and add to your yogurt until you get the consistency you want in your sauce. Add some dried dill to add some color and extra flavor. This sauce is great with lamb and used in gyro sandwiches.

BIG HUGE DUCK EGGS

We will be sending a small follow up survey from now on to all customers who have picked up their orders. It is a quick survey asking if there were any problems with the order.
We did it for the first time this week and were pleasantly surprised to get so much positive feed back we also a couple of comments from customers that alerted us to some problem areas in which we promptly fixed.

Thanks to all those that replied.——It is greatly appreciated!!

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Feb 20 2017

Check out my facebook page for what I’m reading and excited about around the world For instance a global NGO consortium is putting out a book in April called Drawdown, about a 100 ways to get carbon out of the air and stabilize the climate within 30 years.

Here at the farm, it’s quiet. First new crop of kale is ready to pick, others not far behind. Lots of meats in the freezers.

I’m going to a permaculture design course in Belize, led by Albert Bates, a major player in the grassroots effort to get climate under control. Be back on Mar 13, hopefully charged up to go for the year!

Sold out of carrots, will have to plant more this year. Have lots of potatoes and garlic, still some onions, lots of eggs.

See you Friday.

Healthy eating,
Ian and Cami
