Cooking Thyme

If you love learning, good food, good company and a great time, Cooking Thyme is a unique opportunity for anyone age 6 and above to experience all those things.

Cooking Thyme was founded in 2014 by a fellow Market at Dothan customer, Allison Moody. The back story of Cooking Thyme is that Allison was diagnosed with AML Leukemia after a 16 year career in furniture sales.  After surviving cancer, her desire was to share her long time passion for food in a meaningful way by offering informal instruction in the art of cooking to people of all ages.  In the spring of 2016, she returned to her furniture sales career, but periodically offers cooking classes and a variety of freshly prepared foods throughout the year.

“The idea of Cooking Thyme was inspired by Hebrews 13:2 which reads “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so, some have shown hospitality to angels and did not know it”. The goals of Cooking Thyme are to provide freshly prepared food items that comfort the soul and the opportunity for hands-on training to people of all ages in hopes they find joy in cooking as a means to show hospitality to others.”

Cooking Thyme is now scheduling a variety of camps and classes for younger cooks this summer. For adults, Allison offers customized lesson/events to suit many needs; everything from Girls Night Out and How to Survive in the Dorm to a Date Night for couples.

So if you looking for a great experience for your budding chef or want a different kind of intimate social event, or just want to expand on your own base of culinary knowledge, look no further!

Healing Is In The Leaves!

We at Mayim Farm want to see you at your best, healthiest potential!

Sometimes through lifestyle choices or hereditary non-options we have issues. However, our Creator has provided healing.
Our bodies are designed to heal!!!
We are creating a line of medicinal tinctures, salves and oils…natural products. Products created from nature that help our bodies heal.
Naturally if we eat a healthy organic diet we can create and maintain our best, but sometimes our body needs a little help with concentrates to give it a jump start.

These compounds are derived from plants that are native to the area we live in. We go out gather these native plants, concentrate them and provide them in a usable form that fits with our busy lifestyle. Not everyone has the time to do the research, collect the material and process it to a usable form…no need, we do it for you!
There is no substitute for eating right, but when your body needs a little help or a jump start we have an option for you…
We are here for you and your family…

Remember: Our bodies are designed to heal, all we need to do is give it the tools to work with!!

This Week’s Grower Notes

We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.

SANDSPUR FARMS: The time has come!! As you are reading this, I’m probably finishing the first “pickin” of our squash. We will start this week with our CSA boxes! Squash, green beans, zucchini and who know what all else will come ready between now and Friday. Our blueberries should be coming very soon as well. There will be several types, so be sure and read the descriptions.
Also, we have reduced the price of our ground beef and offer some bundle packs. If you have not yet tried it, you really should! It has very little to no fat to drain off. It also has no additives for color or anything else. The dark red color is what wholesome, 14 day aged ground beef looks like. Plus, it’s not from old dairy cows either. Thanks again for your continued support!

HORTON’S FARM: Honey Flow! Our bees continue to work hard bringing in nectar for this years honey crop. Out here in rural Dale County they have access to some blooming (nuisance) plants that are not normally found in urban environments where property is managed more closely. A case in point is the Southern Prickly Ash. Ours were COVERED in bees for three days last week. The last time they bloomed this well our honey had a quality/taste to it that can only be described as “buttery”.

The Indians called the Southern Prickly Ash a “toothache tree” because of its numbing ability.
It’s easy to see why people don’t want it on their property!

AVALON FARMS: This weekend finds me in Birmingham celebrating my youngest child’s graduation from UAB. Excited to see what comes next for him.

We’ve added green beans to the market this week. The squash are coming along and those silver dollar sized patty pans ought to size up this week. God willing.

Champaign, OH:  Thank You!! And, Another Down The Rabbit Hole Installment

Hello, market customers!!

Just a quick thank you to your loveliness, this week! We watched the market jump to new action because of you, because of the impending growing season, and the return of our seasonal growers.

It’s always so nice to watch the market jump back to life, after the drab winter months!! It’s always so nice to welcome back our vendor friends during this time, AND it’s amazing to welcome back customers who go on hiatus during our winter months!! I love the grooviness of it all!!

This time of year is always a good jumping point into healthier eating, an awareness of what is growing right around us, and the ease of obtaining healthy, local food during these coming months. Thank you for starting your seasonal journey, once again!

In my third installment of my journey into food hell, the fall down the rabbit hole of processed foods, is picking up where I left off with my breakfast going off the deep end.

I am a huge lover of breakfast. My usual breakfasts are fruit, nuts, granola, toasted slices of my breads, jam, vegan pancakes, overnight granola, and power bites that I get in Yellow Springs…all things to ensure that I will ease into my day, well nourished, and not starving, before my lunch.

My days are crazy, they usually see me in the kitchen, where I bake, from morning until the late hours. I bake for customers, this market, retail, and restaurants. When I am not baking, I am working on monthly menus and deliveries for my other business, that I run with your co-manager, of this market, Mark, Hippie and the Farmer. We are also some of your produce providers, during the season, here. And, when I am out of the kitchen, I am working on my third business, The Dressed Up Hippie, my little pop up shop, featuring hippie, vintage, boho clothing.

All of this, just to say, the girl NEEDS her nutrients to get her through her crazy days!!

My lunches come late in the afternoon, so my breakfasts need to be complete. I am a vegetarian, not straight up vegan, but shun most dairy, just because it does not agree with me. So, I am creative in my food choices, and know how to get my protein. But, it’s no hate on meat and dairy…we offer the best of the best, right here!!

Moving on…my processed breakfast choices, even toasting up grocery store bread, instead of my own, was all a new great ease. When I only had to unwrap a package, stuff a sweet delight into my mouth, and gulp some coffee, I was on my way in no time!!

I would arrive to bake, getting the dough all mixed up, and suddenly, I would get so shaky, so hungry, plummeting into almost a dizzy, fainting feeling. The clock would tell me it was only 9am, but it felt like it was 4pm, and I had missed lunch. Just to get me through, I grabbed so called healthy power bars. It would help, but then an hour later, hunger, again. And fatigue!! Wow…once you crash, you get so sleepy. My answer would be more coffee, even more than usual for me. And, more sugar…candy, another power bar, another breakfast treat. Anything to keep me pumped on my full daily schedule.

And, in the coming weeks of this undercover eating, my body did begin to adapt to this vicious cycle of sugar on top of sugar on top of sugar. Sure, I would have fruit on hand, but all I could think about was another delightful hit of sugar.

I was hooked, I had become a secret sugar addict, and I didn’t care from what source it was coming from. I just had to get to my next meal.

And, here is where we will pick up, next time. My lunches that looked nothing like my usual lunches.

Oh…and sure, the weeks were flying by with my sugar, salt, and processed highs…but something else began to show up in those weeks. Well, many things began to happen, but the first thing to become noticeable was my skin, and an odd dry patch that appeared, became worse, and progressed with each week that was going by in my experiment…

See why I am so happy to see all of you back? Ordering healthy items, taking steps to begin your seasonal eating? My hope is that by writing my installments, you will be inspired to continue this type of eating, year round…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Shady Acres has medium eggs on sale for $3.25.

Cultured Traditions is listing this week.

Ancient Awakenings will be back next week. They list online every other week.

They are fragile so handle them gently. You can freeze them or use them immediately but don’t expect them to last a week. They are delicious!

Asparagus season is over for Watsonia.
