Lake Placid Online Farmer's Market:  June Market Reminder

Hi All,

To those of you who live in Lake Placid…what a Sunday yesterday, right? At least the power failure was shorter, and in much more appealing weather, than the one in February.

If you were delayed from ordering from the market due to the power failure, this is just a friendly reminder to please order by 10 pm tonight, at which point ordering is closed until the next market period in July.

Also, if you have ordered or plan on ordering, please ensure you can pick up your items promptly on Wednesday. Due to family emergency, we will be leaving Wednesday evening so cannot store food past then. If you need to make special pickup arrangements before then, please let me know. Otherwise, I will call/email when the food arrives.

Have a nice week!

Old99Farm Market:  Hay mang today Monday

I have a few helpers thank you indeed for the hearty early response from you. We got the hay cut and baled on the weekend.

Now a few hours to load the wagon and move it to the barn is all that’s left. I could really use a couple of you to come for about 2 hours today starting at 11am. Or when you can.

A couple people on the wagon and a couple in the barn makes it easy on every one.

I thank you all,

Ian

Market News

Earlier this year, it looked like we might have a year without blueberries. Early unseasonably warm weather fooled the blueberry bushes (and many other fruit trees) into blooming in February, and then a deep freeze in early March killed everything off. Blueberry come in three broad varieties — early, mid, and late fruiting types — so it was hard to tell back then just how bad things were. Well, thanks to a very mild spring since then, the bushes have recovered quite nicely, and you’ll find a bounty of berries listed this week. I know I’m going to be stocking up and throwing as many as I can afford in the freezer for later. One of my favorite winter desserts is a blueberry & cranberry crumble, with a 50/50 mix of frozen blueberries and cranberries and crumble mix on top (you don’t even need to add anything else), and I’m already looking forward to those.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

Greener Acres Farm:  Market Back Open -- New Produce Items

Thank you to everyone for understanding the market closure last week. Hubby is home and slowly recovering.

We had a great time at Vale Wood Farms Summertime Jubilee last weekend and got to meet a lot of great people. We ran a drawing for a $50 Gift Certificate to the online market and would like to congratulate the lucky winner Sondra Haberl of Cresson.

We have many new produce items this week, although still in limited quantities: radish, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, kale, onions, rhubarb and snow peas.

We also freshly dug garlic and elephant garlic.

And fresh herbs galore: parley(flat and curly),sage, rosemary and thyme [see what we did there?], oregano, tarragon, chives and dill. And many varieties of mint to include peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, strawberry mint and pineapple mint.
