Greener Acres Farm:  A Rainbow of Colored Tomatoes!!

Nothing Says Summer Like Vine-Ripened Tomatoes

Tomatoes In A Rainbow of Colors

Here at Green"er" Acres Farm, tomatoes are our specialty. We save much of our own seed to breed the best of the best in our tomatoes. We have many heirloom varieties and a few old standards.

Choose from Reds (Big Beef, Red Brandywine and the brick red Paul Robeson), Oranges (Dad’s Sunset), Yellows (Yellow Beefsteak or Yellow Brandywine), Greens for fried green tomatoes, and Purples/Browns (Cherokee Purple, Black Krim and Pink Berkley Tie Dye).

We also have a Great White Tomato for those who like their tomatoes sweeter and with less acid.

And then there is the tomato that is a rainbow all in itself; the Ananas Noire (Black Pineapple). It is green with streaks of red and yellow not only on the skin but all the way through. It’s flavor is complex, both sweet and smoky. One of our all-time favorites.

And did I mention paste tomatoes? Paste tomatoes are some of the best choices if you are making your own homemade sauces. We have a large, beefy one named Opalka and a striking large red one with gold stripes named Striped Roman. We also have a new variety that we received as a ‘Trial Paste’ variety that we grew out this year. It developed into a beautiful ruffled tomato that almost resembles a short, squat red mini-pumpkin.

And finally are our cherry tomatoes in all colors of the rainbow. We currently sell them as a mix so that you can try all the different varieties. As they begin to produce more heavily, we will offer the individual varieties separately as well.

Tomato Salad!!

So now that you have your tomatoes, why don’t you grab some candy onions and chop them both up and mix them. Now simply add a flavorful Italian dressing for a simple salad. We carry the “Best Dressing Ever”, from Village Eatinghouse (distributed by Heritage Hills Farm) in many varieties of Italian dressing, everything from ‘Bright & Tangy’, to ‘Sweet & Sour’ to ‘Bold & Sassy’ to ‘Sultry & Smoky’.
Summer at it’s finest!

And Let’s Not Forget The Other Summertime Favorite — SWEET CORN

Picked fresh the morning of delivery, we offer sweet corn from Weyant Vegetable Farm. Some of the BEST sweet corn out there. Quantities are unlimited. Available in half dozen and full dozens for your evening meal or by the box (4 dozen) for freezing or canning.

Regular readers of this blog know that my favorite season of the year is summer. I attribute my love of summer for having been born in June. Gazing up at a cobalt sky with white fluffy clouds makes me so happy. Even though I am not much of a gardener, seeing other people’s gardens gives me great pleasure. I love flowers and flowering trees and shrubs, especially our hundred year old Southern magnolia. And I love the bounty of the vegetable garden.

Is there not anything more sublime than a homegrown tomato? My favorite dish featuring homegrown tomatoes is caprese sald. Preparation is very simple – just slice a tomato, slice a ball of fresh mozzarella cheese, and alternate overlapping slices on a platter. Take a nice little handful of fresh basil, give it a quick, coarse chop and sprinkle it over the tomato and cheese. Drizzle a slight measure of good balsamic vinegar over the top and add a tiny pinch of coarse salt for seasoning. And there you have – my favorite summer dish! Now, if I could just master frying squash the way my Mama does…..That’s a story for a different day.

Have a great Sunday, and we’ll see you at the Market.

Thanks,

Beverly

Market News

Good morning!

Here’s the latest from the market:

Erdmann Farm is away this week.

Smirk is BACK!! I know you’ve been waiting patiently and now the wait is over!

Fingerling potatoes were added by Nature’s Wealth

Botanical Harmony Farm is adding a wound care spray for those who prefer to sanitize and cleanse a wound or bites with a spray rather than a salve.
We have had rave reviews from human users- “great for itchy bug bites when I forget to use your bug spray”

and a canine owner- " Just wanted to tell you how much the Wound Care Spray WORKS! My dog has hot spots, BAD ones and nothing worked on them until your spray!!"

That was incredible to hear! Wild- harvested healing plants infused into witch hazel and other healing, skin friendly, all-natural ingredients! Comes in a handy aluminum spray bottle.

Also try out our spray deodorant! Witch hazel infused with wild rose petals are astringent while Magnesium is properly deodorizing, naturally, with no antiperspirant! Sweat away with confidence that this deodorant WORKS!

Short Mountain Cultures offers us some of the most delicious kraut! Choose from a variety of offerings. We use the kraut instead of pickles on bean burgers, as a side dish or even straight out of the jar as a snack! Excellent taste and nutrition!

Such a busy and bountiful time right now! Hope you are able to slow down and enjoy! No slowing down here, but we are enjoying :).

Don’t forget to take a trip through Quinn’s Mercantile Absolutely the best shop around! Locally made goods, something for everyone and the best staff in the Boro! We appreciate Tracy Toy and the space she has provided us!

See ya on the porch!

Tracey & Ashleigh
