Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of July 30 2017

As of July 30th , we can offer the following crops: new harvest chard and kale, purple potatoes, black currants, aronia berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, zuchinni, sorrel, New Zealand spinach, rhubarb, lovage, sweet cicely, scapes, arugula, chives and peppers.

I’m taking orders for beef quarters and halves for pickup in November, $100 deposit secures your order, roughly 100lb of meat.

Also I will take orders for roasting chickens, minimum 5 birds, deposit $25.

So far Cami and I have not decided on getting more pigs for late fall; it would help to hear from any of you that enjoyed your pork from O’99 last year, that you intend to repeat.

Work day this saturday with daughter Kelly’s friends. We’ll load some hay in the barn, cut some dead ash trees for firewood and biochar and have a bbq. Interested? give me a ring.

Market News

We’re already at the end of July? When August draws near, I usually issue a warning that nearly all of the favorite summer veggies are about to be in short supply. Once it gets really hot for long stretches, many plants just shut down flower production, and without flowers, there are no fruit. So, when the hot still days of August roll around there is often a sudden decline in tomatoes, beans, squash, peppers, and pretty much everything but okra. This year, though, we might be ok. It’s not been particularly hot, and there has been just enough rain to keep things from getting too dry. We’ll be pushing 100 degrees in the weeks ahead, no doubt, but we’re also likely to see scattered showers. If we stay lucky and the trend holds for a few more weeks, the bounty we have now just might be with us right into fall.

One of our growers got a brief mention this week in a front page story in the Wall Street Journal, regarding how demands of modern industrial pig farming has pushed pig genetics to an extremely lean, huge hog, so much so that they’ve overshot the mark and now produce bland, dry meat. Cathy Payne at Broad River Pastures is one of America’s farmers who is working to revive the old breeds of pig that have nearly been lost. You can read the entire article here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/another-problem-with-america-our-skinny-pigs-make-lousy-bacon-1501256000.

Cathy has been working on a book about her experiences reviving the particular breed she’s become known for, the Guinea Hog. She’s nearly done, and has opened up an Indiegogo campaign to help her cross the finish line. If you’d like to support her book and get some great items from her farm while you do, visit her campaign’s page here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/guinea-hogs-lost-and-found-a-recent-history#/

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Extra! Extra! From Sow's Ear Piggery

Manchester Locally Grown market

The farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use our slim market funds in a responsible manner.

Good afternoon!

My apologies to Andra Martens and to the gentle reader for omitting some very important news from Sow’s Ear Piggery.
Here is Andra’s announcement:

Farm News of the Week

This week, purchase any pork product from Sow’s Ear Piggery, and get a free sample of our sliced ham. We’ve been wet curing and smoking ham for a few years for friends and family, but are not permitted to sell without a manufacturer’s license (something under consideration). As always, our pastured pigs are raised non-GMO, without corn, soy, growth additives, or antibiotics.

Important Ordering and Pickup Information

Ordering will be open until TUESDAY at 10 p.m., and your order will be available for pickup on THURSDAY between 4:00 and 5:30 at our tents located outside Manchester Farm Store, 251 Interstate Dr., Manchester. We can also deliver your order to your home (or
other location) on Friday afternoons, for a small fee, if it’s more convenient for you. If you prefer to utilize this service, please place an order for it, same as other products, selecting your delivery area. Don’t forget to give us your location address in the comments section of the order. Also please text Linda at (931) 273-9708 for specific arrangements.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda & Michael
