Market News

It’s a week of transitions, what with UGA done for the semester (and Maymester starting up) and the public schools winding down for the year. With sudden changes in schedules and routine, it’s also a week that more people that usual tend to forget to pick up their orders. It’s a good time to check the phone number on your account, over on the Your Account page, to make sure that it’s current and preferably a cell phone. I start calling people who haven’t arrived at 7:30 — we are open until 8 — and every week there are folks I reach who completely forgot it was Thursday. There are also usually people I’m not able to reach at all, because I have a number for a home phone or they don’t answer and don’t have voice mail set up, and 8 o’clock rolls around and their food is still sitting there. When that happens I have to give the food away and charge them anyway, because the growers deserve to get paid. I’d much rather you get the food you order, even if we have to work out an an arrangement when I reach you with the reminder call, and that’s much easier if I can reach you before we leave for the night.

I don’t have any other news this week, so I’ll let you get right to ordering. Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9-12. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market News

Hello!

It is great to be back with you all on a weekly schedule! We love to see all the familiar faces, and meet the new customers! Thank you so much for all your support! We always strive to grow and provide for you the best locally and organically grown food possible. We hold dear the trust you put in us to pack your order every week! Because of this, we really appreciate your feedback.

The strawberries this year have been a challenge! John and his crew are monitoring the crop diligently and doing strict quality control, however all the rain has really done a number on the plants. There is some rot happening inside the berries that is undetectable while picking. As you can imagine, this is a dilema! We have some quarts going out that have been excellent, some that are bad, and some a mix of both.

This week is no different – we hope to get a good supply of quarts to bring to delivery for first come first serve. However, this will only be if we are generally highly satisfied with the quality. Still to be determined! We appreciate your support and patience with this! And we do hope you get some good berries!

Have lots of good stuff this week – and The Bloomy Rind is back with us!

Please remember we love to have our plastic bags and containers returned to us! If you have bought a plant, we will take those pots back as well. Please only bring us recyclables and reusables that we have given you – not other kinds you get from the store.

Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Thank you so much for all your support!

See you Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee

CLG:  Opening Bell: Eggs, Squash, Kale, Cheese

Good afternoon!
If you picked up early enough on Friday, then you may have seen the first yellow squash of the season on the extras table! Squash is a warm weather crop so all of your favorite vegetables will be coming on before too much longer. We have baby jalapeños and tomatoes already set at Cedar rock Ridge, and it looks like it’s going to be a great summer. This week starts the garlic harvest! Garlic is planted in mid-October, and dug in mid-May. Each stalk is cleaned and then hung in bunches of 10 among the cedar trees to dry.

Enjoy some eggs from Funny Farm this week. Nathaniel’s hens (duck and chickens) lay some of the happiest eggs around, thanks to his diligent care.

We’re having another T-shirt giveaway starting tonight! Each item ordered from Ratchford Farms this week will earn you one entry into the giveaway for a stylish large T-shirt featuring Ratchford Farms Buffalo Ranch. For example: Buy 4 packs of ground beef and get 4 entries. A winner will be drawn Friday morning and the winner announced in the Friday Pick-Up Reminder email.

Take your pick of the wonderful, fresh-roasted coffee varieties available now! These were roasted and ground in Rose Bud, Arkansas.

New varieties of Goat Cheese available now from White River Creamery!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Check out over 700 wonderful items listed right now. See you on Friday!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

Duette, FL:  Japanese Cucumber

Dear Customers,
This week our new vegetable is the Japanese Cucumber.
The Japanese cucumber has several advantages over common cucumbers. It is thin-skinned, never bitter and entirely edible. The average harvested length is about four to eight inches, while the cucumber is still young. Its skin is forest green and smooth with longitudinal grooves. The flesh is crisp, crunchy, succulent and tender firm. Its flavors are bright, effervescent and melon-like.

Please place your orders.

Thank you.
