Market News

A special hello to all the mothers out there this week! I hope your families treated you to something a little above and beyond this weekend. It’s been a really slow week, news-wise, what with much of Athens getting ready to go to sleep for the summer. The place doesn’t quite turn into the ghost town I remember in the ‘90s when I moved here, but there’s definitely a change of pace. The recent storms and following heat has done a number of the strawberries, but there should be a second crop ripening soon. I see lots of pictures on social media from our farmers busy in the fields, so as many people leave town for a bit, that just means more great fruit and veggies for the rest of us!

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9-12. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market News

Hello!

We hope you are enjoying this beautiful day, and getting to spend some time with friends and family. Happy Mother’s Day to all the women out there who share their love and care with the world and all creatures. We appreciate you!

This year we will again be hosting The Peach Truck along side our delivery at Trinity Church. The Peach Truck is a family run business that brings peaches up from Pearson Farm in Georgia. They will begin setting up next to us we believe in the next week or so, and be there through the season. They set up at 4:00, and are there until 6:00 or until they sell out.
These peaches are not local, and are not organic. Because Fresh Harvest has a very strict policy of only selling local and organic produce, we do not take orders for the peaches through us or the website. We have invited them to join us however as a service to you!

Have lots of good stuff this week – new crops are coming in every week this time of year and there is a great diversity of yummy veggies for you!

Please remember we love to have our plastic bags and containers returned to us! If you have bought a plant, we will take those pots back as well. Please only bring us recyclables and reusables that we have given you – not other kinds you get from the store.

Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Thank you so much for all your support!

See you Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee
