Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Mar 4 2018

This turned out to be a major breakthrough week in the campaign for climate change response. Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Sequel led off on the weekend in Dundas, Tues was McMaster Climate Change Research centre’s public lecture, Wed was the kickoff of the Bay Area Climate Summit hosted by Burlington, Hamilton and Mohawk College. Thursday is an all day conference at the RBG in Burlington on Bay Area Climate Action. And in Edmonton is hosting the IPCC Climate and Cities conference for three days with 750 climate scientists from around the world. The world is waking up to the urgency of action; you’re going to hear a whole lot more.

That and the federal government budget was made public, with dismal impact.

“This Budget has nothing for climate – nothing at all. It’s as if we’re not in a climate emergency.”
- Elizabeth May, MP

Overall this budget fails to deliver in the best interests of Canadians on the country’s most pressing problems: Growing Inequality, Green Economy and most importantly: Climate Change.

The Liberals campaigned on a promise to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, but over two years into their mandate, they are still giving the industry hundreds of millions a year in taxpayer-funded handouts. Budget 2018 should have signalled the beginning of the end for these harmful subsidies.

We don’t have enough growth on our greens to start harvesting but I’m hopeful for next week.

I have a Lineback steer in the freezer, 380 lbs of grass-fed beef. We’re offering pre-selected for $200 or 10% discount for 20lb orders, mixed according to your choice.

Roasting chickens are in the freezer, whole, halves and quarters.

We have lots of eggs.

Healthy eating to you all,
Ian and Cami

EAT LOCAL
Have you ever thought about cutting the grocery store habit and eating mostly local foods? Inspired by Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, which speaks to her own convictions on food and community, Lynn Pugh (of Cane Creek Farm) has felt called to embark on the journey of eating (mostly) locally-produced foods. Realizing that to do so requires quite a bit of resourcefulness and (mostly emotional) support, Lynn has recruited me to join her and would like to know if there are others out there who are also interested in sharing the joys and challenges of this journey. As Kingsolver herself said, “We live in a culture that’s so thoroughly entitled to have absolutely everything in absolutely every season. It’s just inconceivable that anyone could intentionally give up 90 percent of your choices and not drag around missing them every minute." And yet, that is what we intend to do- joyfully!

Admittedly, the edibles that will be the toughest to find locally are often the ones we enjoy the most— pasta, flour, chocolate and coffee. So to be clear—each person sets his or her own rules. I will certainly not be giving up coffee, nor will I let all of those bananas sitting in my freezer go to waste! However, Lynn and I are invigorated by the challenge of switching up what’s on our plates and excited that there are others who also want to connect with local food sources, create community and strengthen our local food economy. Therefore, if you want to share your own experiences in sourcing and eating (mostly) local foods, PLEASE contact me or Lynn. We plan on having a many-faceted approach to supporting each other, from assisting each other in sourcing those hard-to-get items, to enjoying potluck meals together. Bon appetit!

What is the market missing? Are there any products that you would like to see offered by local artisans and farmers? Please email theucmmingharvest@gmail.com to let us know what your food interests and needs are!

Miami County Locally Grown:  Welcome our Newest Vendor!!

Bad Seed Mustard Company has joined the market with their three deli-style mustards!!

From the Perfect Burn of their Sweet Habanero mustard to the No Heat Zone of their Sweet Deli recipe, they’ve got something for every palate!

Whether you make some killer deviled eggs, a classic sandwich, or pair it with the perfect pretzel, possibilities are endless!

Bad Seed Mustard Company started out like any other condiment business; in the kitchen! Sam’s Grandfather Richard Powell came across a recipe for an Old Fashioned Sweet and Hot Mustard back in 1981 while traveling the state of Ohio as an Insurance Adjuster. He brought the recipe home to Springfield Ohio, and Grandmother Phyllis would spend the next 5 years fine-tuning and correcting the recipe so that is was just right.

For years the mustard was renowned inside the Powell Family household; finding its home on everything from Turkey Sandwiches to Hamburgers and Hotdogs. In 2012 Sam asked his Grandmother if she would share her secret recipe so that he could start a small project, selling the mustard locally to family and friends.

“The project has quickly grown into a small business, one I know my Grandmother would be proud of. Her culinary passion extended beyond the food she plated, it encompassed even the condiments that complemented her dishes. Bad Seed Mustard Company continues this passion, providing the World’s Most Versatile Mustards!”
