<p>French toast &#8211; serve with fruit, bacon or sausage, grits, and coffee &#8211; all available from Market2Go and/or the Saturday Main Street Market.</p> <p>Tips &amp; Notes<br /> This dish is a great way to use up bread that&#8217;s beginning to go stale.</p> <p>The recipe can be found in the <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/29728/29728-h/29728-h.htm" target="_blank"><strong>Apicius</strong></a>, a collection of recipes dating back to Imperial Roman times, where it is described as aliter dulcia (another sweet dish). The recipe says to slice bread, crust removed, and break it into large pieces. Soak these pieces in milk and beaten egg, fry in oil, and cover with honey before serving.</p>

6-8 pieces bread
or baguette
2-3 eggs, well beaten
1/4 cup milk or half & half
1/4 cup honey
2 tbsp butter
1/4 tsp salt
vanilla or cinnamon if desired
Top with fruit (optional) like: strawberries
or blueberries
or blackberries
or peaches
or nectarines
Or Cane Syrup
Or Jam
Serve with Bacon or Sausage
and Grits
and coffee

Step by Step Instructions
  1. Combine eggs, milk, honey and salt.
  2. Dip bread slices into the mixture
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet. Fry in butter over medium heat until golden brown, turning once.
  4. Can be topped with syrup, honey, powered sugar, jam, or fruit.
