New Farmer

Morris Cleveland of Healing Earth Farm joined us as Farmer of the Week this past Thursday. We not only got to meet Morris but also his lovely wife, Annie and their positively adorable daughter, Athena! What a treat to get to know the family! Morris brought Honey, Eggs, Tomatoes, Potatoes and Corn. Things disappeared quickly and a good time was had by all. Unfortunately, when Morris and Annie returned home, it was to find that the storm that had gone through while they were gone decimated their Tomato and Corn Crops! Morris is re-planting and hopes to be with us soon! When I spoke with him on Friday, he said he needed a little time to see what – if anything, is salvageable. Please keep this Farmer and his Family in your prayers!

Our Farmers have been seriously busy taking care of crops and there is a plethora of fresh and local Veggies offered this week!

SPLG BENEFIT: Market Manager = Food Forager

Yes, it is my job as Market Manager to find new supplies for locally grown veggies and locally raised meats for SPLG Customers. This summer is different than any before because Nathan’s Natural Veggies (my husband) has always been a major supplier year round. Nathan continues to build his permaculature food forest with the intention of planting more fruit trees. Our hope is that we will make extra money in our golden years selling wonderful fruits through this Market or one like it. With Nathan pretty much retired now, I continue to look for replacement produce like okra, yardlong beans, cow peas, and more spinach variety, all of which don’t mind growing in Florida’s summer heat. I’ve met several local farmers who may fill the bill but probably not until next summer. Currently, I am also seeking a new local farmer to raise pork for us as My Mother’s Garden has leased their farmland to a CSA and will no longer raise hogs to sell. Our Market requires a USDA Certified Facility for processing the animals and that can rule out a whole lot of farmers. And so it goes and so I love the challenge! With My Mother’s Garden pulling out of our Market you should know that whatever pork is left is all there is and, unless we find a new farmer, there won’t be anymore. So buy it up while you can! On another subject but related to caring about local food supplies, I found a bit of myself in this article on Local Harvest and it got me to wondering how many others have been part of the local food movement long enough to see themselves as well.

Summertime Volunteer Opportunities

ALL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES are listed on our Q&A page. Please take a look and give me a call 727-515-9469. You are needed this summer! Particularly needed are volunteers, both on every other Thursday mid-afternoon, to pickup dairy in Oldsmar and administrative help working with Market Manager to make adjustments to invoices. Details are at the link. YOU ARE NEEDED. Please respond to make arrangements for this week if possible.

St. Pete Locally Grown Market in St. Pete is the hub for selling fine products of many of the Growers below needing volunteers—and all those listed on Our Growers page.

GROWER NEWS
Valued Grower Faithful Farms is absent from our Market this week. Luckily we’ve got Brenon’s Homegrown & Nathan’s Natural Veggies providing beautiful greens mixes that substitute so nicely for standard lettuce fare. Just search for “Salad” and you’ll find them on our Market complete with salad dressing recommendations! Now’s your chance to try something different.

MEDJOOL DATE RECIPES to share. Also this one for stuffing with feta cheese that I often hear about. We have Medjool dates on our Market in TWO sizes of packaging.

YOUR COMMENTS REQUESTED
If you are happy with our produce, products and services, PLEASE leave us a brief review on Local Harvest, a national directory of farms, markets, CSAs and folks like us. Just click here to “Post a Review”?

SMOOTHIE OPERATOR
Thought it might be that time of year for you too, when summer smoothies become a great chilled substitute for ice cream. I admit I am addicted to ice cream and right now I’m not winning. So my pledge is to retry this great concoction created back in December during a wonderful winter-hat-making party with SPLG Volunteers. Sincere thanks to Customer Phyllis for the inspiration to make this Smoothie Operator that was posted to our Community Market Blog. If YOU want to blog for us, just send me an email and I’ll add you as an Author.

SALE PRICING
Pink Lady apples, ALL lamb cuts, ALL pork sausages and bratwurst, ALL salmon portions from 6oz. pieces to 5-pound packages, shallots, Himalayan sea salt

GIVEAWAY PRICING
GIVEAWAYS are your chance to try items you might not otherwise try. This week our “giveaways” include butter, garlic, kale, and okra. Giveaway pricing is here for the summer to help us all save money and avoid waste.

SPLG’S FRUIT BASKET
Pink Lady apples, Nectarines, Medjool dates, Dapple Dandy pluots, and Florida papayas.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

Market News

Hello!

We have had a tremendous amount of rain this past week. Thankfully the temperatures have been on the cooler side, but it is still adds some concerns, such as produce rotting in the field and not also being able to cultivate the weeds because of the wet conditions. All in all, however, it has been a pretty good growing season so far, without too much drama!

It is another lovely week of great produce offerings. It is a big week for cabbage – these heads are on the smaller size, so get more than one if you want more than two servings. Zinnias are in this week, and are available in colorful, straight bunches. We’ve got lots of tomatoes, and fresh basil to go along with it! The blueberries are still here and are so delicious!!

As always, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday

John and Tallahassee
