Miami County Locally Grown:  Tonight's featured vendor? Mike and Becky Smith - Simple Living Farm LLC!!!

We first met Mike and Becky when we were all vendors at the Piqua Farmer’s Market in 2012, the year they moved to Piqua to start Simple Living Farm!!

Their focus? Grow healthy fruits and vegetables for area farmer’s markets and the CSA program they’d be starting the next year. They also began raising free-range meat chickens who are only fed non-GMO soy-free food!

Their delicious produce, including spinach, garlic, onions, tomatoes and those wonderfully sweet carrots, became Certified Naturally Grown in 2016, and they also constructed a large high tunnel in 2013. So many of you have been enjoying the rewards of their season-extending structure – all those radishes, lettuces, greens, carrots and herbs, produced in an unheated greenhouse through the winter… IN OHIO!!

I’ll never forget my first lengthy conversation with Mike at the Piqua market, discussing Big Ag, the importance of what we farmers were all trying to provide, and the risks of pesticides… so enthusiastic, he invited us to join them for a road trip to the Mother Earth News Fair in Pennsylvania… I thought, “Wow, how nice talking to someone so passionate about beliefs we share, and this guy is really friendly… that will definitely change if we bring our two-year-old and my cranky pregnant self on a weekend excursion with them!”

Mike and Becky are also co-chapter leaders of the Upper Valley Weston A. Price Foundation. If you’re not familiar with the group, you’re missing out!! They host a great variety of speakers, all health and food related. We’ve heard fascinating presentations there, from making sourdough breads and fermented foods to gluten intolerance, the dangers of pesticides, and combating common diseases. Meetings are held at the Piqua Nazarene Church, 400 S. Sunset Drive, on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm.

Check out Simple Living Farm’s Facebook page, Facebook@SimpleLivingFarmLlc, and the Weston A. Price Foundation’s website, www.westonaprice.org

Isn’t it wonderful to have neighbors determined to share with the community something as vital as the healthy food they lovingly produce?

And although we’ll see the end of their winter carrots this week, stay tuned… that high tunnel is planted and Spring is just around the corner!!

And now…guest bloggin’…

Hello, fellow Virtual Market community members:

This is what happens when you give Pam feedback about her wonderful blogs and and music references – she asks you to participate.  I’m happy to share my thoughts about our Virtual Farmer’s Market because it’s been a consistently tasty and helpful part of my weekly routine over the past four years of serving as the CEO of the Champaign Family YMCA.  Aside from my regular activities at the Y, I teach 3 group cycling classes each week.  I love cycling and I enjoy connecting with members in a group exercise setting.

A group cycling class has much in common with the Virtual Market: both are communities filled with people who are seeking and finding healthy lifestyle choices; people who aren’t afraid to try something new or outside of ‘normal’ patterns of shopping or exercising.  Both cycling classes and the healthy foods I get from the Virtual Market help me hit a healthy ‘reset’ button and I’m very thankful for both!  I encourage each of you to think about your passions and develop habits that allow you to spend more time in passionate pursuit of the healthiest lifestyle you can imagine.  It’ll do wonders for your heart and mind and let you more deeply connect with your soul’s deepest yearnings.  I love picking songs for cycling classes that aren’t top 40.  I love creating song cycles for classes that help individuals feel a deeper connection to their ‘better selves’.  With that in mind, here’s a song from one of my favorite bands, a group of musicians who are criminally underexposed:

“I Need More Love” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band:

All of the cold winds blowing
Through our neighborhoods
While my frustration’s growing
Through concrete, steel and wood
I need more love
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I’m tired of feeling tension
Everyone’s talking black and white
When will something change me
And help me get my mind right
I need more love, I need more love
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
C’mon fill the room, baby
Take the shackle off of your feet
Let the love flow, say
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
I need more love every day of my life
