Fresh Harvest, LLC:  Fresh Harvest for May 13th

Market News

Hello!

Well we have dived head first into summer! The long suffering spring crops are again going through some stressful temperatures. We are irrigating like crazy to keep the roots cool in hopes of preventing the lettuces to all get bitter and bolt!

We have the great treat of fresh shiitake mushrooms! Also strawberries are picking up steam and we should have some at delivery available on a first come, first serve basis!

We got news from The Peach Truck that their first delivery of peaches will be this Wednesday! These are non-organic peaches from Georgia, and we do not sell them directly through Fresh harvest as we only sell local and organic produce. However they are set up near us for the summer ahead, and will be open from 4:30 – 6:30, or until the peaches run out.

The Bloomy Rind is back with us this week – it’s always fun to try Kathleen’s carefully curated selection of artisan cheese!

This is the last week for buying herb plants! There are still lots of beautiful basil, thyme, rosemary and oregano plants for your garden.

You have until Tuesday night to place your order.

Thanks for your support, and we will see you on Wednesday!

Recipes

Sweet Braised Whole Spring Onions

This turns these onions from a garnish to a delicious side dish!
Serves: 4

2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 pound scallions/spring onions (about 5 bunches, or 3 dozen)
1/2 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons coarsely chopped fresh tarragon (do not substitute dried) or 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 lemon
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Using about 1 1/2 teaspoons of butter, generously butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Trim the root ends and 1 1/2 inches off the green tops of the scallions. Arrange half of the scallions in the baking dish so the bulb ends are lined up at one end and the greens are toward the middle. Place the other half of the scallions in the opposite direction, so you end up with a double layer of scallion greens across the center of the dish and a single layer of bulbs and each end of the dish. Pour the water into the dish. Cut the remaining butter into slivers and dot it over the top of the scallions. Season with the tarragon or parsley, salt, and pepper.

Cover the dish tightly with foil, and slide onto the middle rack in the oven. Braise undisturbed until fragrant and tender, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove the foil from the dish, and increase the oven heat to 450 degrees. Roast the scallions for 10 minutes, then shake the pan back and forth to coat the scallions with the glaze that will have formed. Continue roasting until the liquid evaporates and the edges of the scallions are beginning to brown, another 5 minutes or so. Squeeze over a few drops of lemon juice to taste, and serve hot or warm.

Miami County Locally Grown:  Hoping everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day!

Does a more exhausting, demanding, or rewarding profession exist than motherhood?

My grandma always said that every day is mother’s day, and with 10 kids, she’d know!
I’m lucky she and my mom provided me selfless examples of how to be a good mother.

I am the mother of four children – our oldest just turned 7, and the youngest is 20 months – and I am grateful every day to have been so richly Blessed in my chosen vocation.

And this day is about more than just Mom… so many women, whether another relative, friend, teacher, neighbor, with that special mothering instinct have made a powerfully positive impact on our lives, and we don’t always have the opportunity to appreciate them as they deserve.

So, to all the “Mothers” out there in our Happy Market Family, thank you for everything, and Happy Mother’s Day!

Foothills Market:  The Market is Going on Summer Hiatus

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve noticed a substantial downturn in traffic for Foothills Market. We’re guessing that’s because the in-person market on the courthouse square is going again.

As a result, we’ve decided to put Foothills Market on vacation mode for the summer. We’ll reopen in the fall once the Clarksville/Johnson County Farmers’ Market begins to wind down for the season.

Our growers will all still have products available at the downtown market, so come see us in person to get your fresh, locally-grown produce and meats.

See you next fall!

CLG:  Opening Bell: Tamales, Cabbage, Coffee, Rice, Salad Mix!

Good afternoon!
Summertime temps already, after a mild winter. Has anyone else noticed lots of ants this year? Ugh… I’ve heard from several Growers that Garlic is being harvested already! We should have several varieties being listed later this month. If it’s like other years, the Garlic will sell out quickly, so be vigilant. You can store it in your refrigerator for several months so stock up when it’s available. :-)

Cabbage! First of the year. Get some and try making sauerkraut. It’s easy. Ask me and I’ll send you the Youtube video I follow to make the best Kraut ever!

Maria will be at market Friday with a fresh batch of her awesome BBQ pulled Pork and Spinach Dip!

Tamales! Also on Friday, we welcome Doña Estela and her amazing homemade Tamales! She will make them Friday morning and have them at market Friday afternoon. They will be 5 for $7 in 3 flavors: Pork, Chicken, and Jalapeño & Cheese. To get an idea of how many she should prepare, please add a note to your order, or text me at 501-339-1039.

Backyard Gourmet: Join your friends at the Faulkner County Urban Farm Project on Sunday May 20th from 1-4pm, “international Bee Day” for the 7th annual Backyard Gourmet Festival— celebrating growing, cooking and eating local food. There will be music, contra dancing, tamales, garden and bee themed activities, salad and dessert potluck. Behind the Public Library on Tyler Street.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Over 625 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:
