Rumor has it the maple trees on Connelly’s Maple Sugar farm have some sap bucket necklaces starting as of last week. Will the sap be flowing soon? Only that sassy lady Mother Nature knows! And we won’t leave out Marc and Shari at Valley View Woodlands…their trees are just as ready to dance! Get your griddles hot and your batter stirred ’cause its about maple syrup time folks!

Augusta Locally Grown:  Weblog Entry

Love is in the air this week.

Love is the stuff of good, healthy food grown by people we come to know as friends and neighbors. Love is also the way in which we prepare and eat those gorgeous ingredients. And, at Augusta Locally Grown, love is the gift of community.

I’d like to take this virtual moment to express my deep love for the hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, interns, customers, chefs, partnership organization and farmers for making ALG more vibrant and viable than any one of us could have imagined on our own.

See y’all at the market on Tuesday!

Cheers!
Kim

Market News

Foodies,

Everything is a go – if you’d like to order produce, go ahead and place your orders online till 11pm Monday night!

http://tampabay.locallygrown.net/files/product/image/107145/original/eggs.jpg?1350918209 />
The pick up times have been extended to Wednesday 6-8pm in order to better accommodate our distributor, farmers, and customers!

And Thursday from 1-4pm. (case by case, call ahead)

If there is something special you want, please email before Sunday 4pm.

Sarah will be handling the market again this week while Ryan is in Cuba to learn about urban agriculture and cooperatives! If you have any questions, e-mail the BH or call her at (407)754-5794.

You now can order ANYTHINGEVEN IF the quantity says zero (some exceptions with Gnarly Farms products)

Order here today!.

Email us if you have any questions.

The boxes are now hand-selected by the customer/member instead of pre-packaged. This means the earlier you come, the more selection you’ll have for your box! Please bring your own box or reusable bag as we are running low at the coop. Also, if you have any to donate, it would be greatly appreciated.

We may donate excess food that does not sell in the course of a week to local food programs that the Tampa Underground organizes – the Good Samaritan, the Hub & home church feedings for those in need.

If you would like to be there to help drop off for those folks, please let me know.

Here’s whats been going on at the Co-op.

Over the past few months a ‘steering committee’ has been meeting every month & working to establish bylaws that are in accordance with our values and principles.

We are almost at the point where we can file for Cooperative status with the state of Florida statute 619. Hopefully, within a few months that will be a reality. If you would like to participate, have legal or nonprofit experience, please let us know.

Our location has to change around the end of February/beginning of March.

Right now it looks like we will be moving into the blue building near the current location as another temporary spot. We’re still planning to move around the end of this month and could use some help so let us know if you’d be willing to volunteer your time and/or supplies.

We have also been visiting an aquaponics farm in Dade City called Morning Star Fishermen. They have a 65,000 gallon aquaponics system and are raising tilapia as well as a ton of vegetables. It is a truly inspiring production- they even teach classes and are expanding. We’re thinking of planning a field trip up there with members so be on the lookout for info! We want members to be involved and get to know their farmer(s), so check out the growers on the website, let us know if you are interested in visiting any of them, and we can try to set something up. After all, that’s the point!

More updates to come soon!

Coming Events

Ryan, our Market Manager, will be in Cuba from February 13-23 in order to learn about cooperatives and permaculture initiatives there. Sarah, along with any volunteers who would like to help, will be handling orders and pickup during that time. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, feel free to contact Sarah at 407-754-5794 or ssmarsh2@mail.usf.edu.

On Monday, February 17th, Tampa Free Skool will be partnering with Tampa Bay Fair Food to screen the documentary, The Harvest, about the mistreatment of migrant farmworkers for Free Skool’s Progressive movie night. The movie will be screened at 7:30 pm at Cafe Hey, followed by a short discussion of the film.

Saturday, February 23rd, Tampa Free Skool will be hosting an Introduction to Medical Botany Class at the Roosevelt 2.0 at 6PM. It will be a brief introduction/overview of plants and their medicinal uses. Topics to be covered include: (VERY) basic plant metabolism and botanical nomenclature; brief history of medical botany; (a few) common botanicals used for certain ailments; active compounds; modes of action; and how/where they are commercially sold.

HCC will be hosting a Beyond Sustainability Conference at the end of February (Feb 28-Mar 1). The focus will be on social entrepreneurship and sustainable economy: exploring nexuses. For more information, Click Here

USF’s Student Environmental Association is hosting RecycleFest- an opportunity for creative minds to create art pieces from recycled material that may be displayed in the MSC Centre Gallery! The event will be taking place March 28th at 1:30PM at the MSC Amphitheater. If you are interested and/or have any questions, contact Sarah Seabrook at sseabrook@mail.usf.edu

Market News

Life is Good! We are one day back from the 2013 Midwest Organic Farming Conference and hugely motivated, inspired and educated for the coming growing season. Rog is now an irrigation and cultivating specialist; Razz is a wizard with cover crops and ecological pest management; and both of us are official graduates of the High Tunnel University. (I sure hope all of this stuff downloads from the brain as quickly and easily as it uploaded!)

We are pleased and proud to announce that the 2013 Summer CSA Produce Subscriptions are available for purchase.

If you would like a creative, diverse and fulfilling 18-20week season of fresh produce (vegetables and some fruits) and love the variety nature’s seasons provide us here in the great white north, come and join us in the bounty of good, fresh food.

To signup and purchase, either:
1) fill out Member Agreement Form and mail check to: FarmWLIG, N7971 747th St, River Falls, WI 54022.
Click here for Printable Member Agreement

OR

2) go to The Market tab (here on the website) and select/order your CSA produce subscription (get some free miles out of your healthy produce!) Also print & mail Member Agreement form.
Click here for Printable Member Agreement

We’ll take it from there and keep you updated each week with what’s on the horizon.

Please feel free to pass this opportunity on to friends and family; we will consider opening up a new dropsite when 5 new orders request one.

Hope to feed you soon!
