This week’s csa share will likely include two pounds of asparagus, spring salad mix, kale, a head of leaf lettuce, Easter egg radishes, and a green onion or two.

I hope you all like salad alot. Don’t worry, it won’t last forever. Soon we will have beets, carrots, cabbage, onions, potatatoes, and the like.

It’s every urban farmer’s dream come true! Offshore Seafood Co. processing plant, located at around 25th & 25th in St. Petersburg, generates fish scraps of skins and backbones (with NO heads) that they want to recycle FREE into the local garden community. They fill Five 44 gallon trash cans, 180 lbs. each of scraps each per week. In season, it’s double that. The scraps are kept refrigerated at 35 degrees. I have seen it with my own eyes and it is excellent quality. They need to move it all out NOW. If you know someone who wants to compost fish scraps or bury them deep into a home vegetable garden or commercial garden or for any other use they can think of, please direct them to call Offshore Seafood to make arrangements to pickup as much, or as little, as needed. They want it all gone asap! It seems a waste if we can’t put it to good use for FREE soil nutrients. Call Offshore Seafood’s office at 727-329-8848 or Kris Sahr’s cell at 727-459-3470 to make arrangements for pickup. Info on composting fish. ALSO, contact local extension service agency on how to compost fish properly.

Tullahoma Locally Grown:  Laying Hens, Vegetable Seedlings, and Flower Bouquets


Hi everyone!

Wayne Dillar is selling laying hens this week, and a moveable chicken coop as well! Look for them under the Livestock category. If you have any questions about raising chickens, ask any of our egg producers. I highly recommend Gail Damerow’s book Storeys Guide to Raising Chickens.

Double tree is selling seedlings this week: Pac choi, Broccoli, Cabbage, and Tomato!

Petalland has flower bouquets for sale: a wonderful addition to your office or home.

Deep-Set Farm has a lot of watercress, and Grundy Greens has Bibb lettuce heads for sale.

Skim the categories on the left to check out the soaps and lotions, sprouts, edible flowers, baked goods, meat, etc.

April turns

Dear members.

For the last 2 market cycles I have been mostly on the road and in the air, and it is good to be back! Of course I mourn the fact that I missed 9 full days of full-throttle Spring, which can never be recaptured. Aside from family and friends one of the things I missed most while I was away were my foods! Spending time in both Boston and LA, two cities I think of as being in the forefront of sustainable ag and local sourcing, no one I talked to knew of a market as well developed as CAFÉ. So, in an effort to make up for my absence I am about to make my third order of this cycle (keep thinking of more yummy things I missed)!

Now I want to begin to prepare you for some new developments at CAFÉ. Soon we will be switching our market webpage to a new software platform. We will no longer be a locallygrown.net. We are confident that you will like the new site better because it will offer more options, better service, feedback opportunities, and more. However, it will be a major change and so there will need to be adjustments made by all. Elian and I are beginning training sessions for the new system and will make the transition as soon as possible, hopefully before our growers reach their full expansion of production for the season. We will be giving you more information about this soon.

As you plan your week, consider the following event if you are free Wednesday after lunchtime:

JoAnn Brewer from the Clemson Cooperative Extension will present a free program on Fruit and Vegetable Gardening in a Small Space at 1 p.m. April 17 at the Village Branch Library, 124 N. Katherine St., Pickens. Call 864-898-5747.

Learn how to make your own refreshing, bubbly soda containing over forty strains of probiotics (over 6 times more than yogurt) using water kefir. Water kefir is a traditional probiotic culture, grown and cared for by many generations who used it to ferment sweet liquid into a healthy, hydrating drink – the precursor to modern day soda.
