Market News

Hello!

Spring is coming out all over, and we are thankful for the warmer weather! The produce in the fields is starting to settle in and do some good growing. We are definitely in a lull period right now for produce – it was nice to have that flush last week but this week we are back to very low quantities and variety. We know it is frustrating to have the veggies sold out so quickly. Please know it is simply the time of year, and that we will have a much greater variety by May and plenty for all.

It is a good week for ranunculus flowers. They are so colorful and spring like! Enjoy a bunch for yourself this week and take some to a friend!

We are back on the grass under the trees! It is a lovely spot, and we plan on being down there now through the season, unless of course there is rain.
We are so appreciative to the Trinity Church community for allowing us to use their porch for the winter. The congregation has been very supportive and welcoming to Fresh Harvest for many years now, and we thank them for all they do for us!

Once again, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

John and Tallahassee

The Wednesday Market:  The Market is Open; Avoid These Pesticides

Good afternoon to everyone in The Wednesday Market community.

The Wednesday Market is open. Please place your orders by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up on Wednesday between 3:30 and 6 p.m. Be sure to check the website for this week’s product offerings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

Today is a rainy Sunday, and on my list of things to do is make a pot of chili and iron a ton of laundry that has stacked up this week! What is on your list of things to do? With the weather warming up (finally!), many of us are gearing up for a season of gardening. Let us all be respectful of the environment and take care not to use unnecessary and potentially dangerous chemicals. Here is a Facebook post from Anna Evans that I thought is worth repeating:

“*BEE Killing Pesticides Found!*

If you have ANY of these brand name pesticides, please DISPOSE of them immediately. These are a class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, [yes it is derived from nicotine, a well-known poison when concentrated]. Scientists have discovered that it is very toxic to honey bees and may be a major contributor to ‘colony collapse’ where whole colonies of honey bees are destroyed. Two ways the pesticide kills bees: one is direct contact when the pesticide is sprayed on the plant and honeybees are affected directly. Also, this pesticide enters the plant through the root as it washes into the soil and is taken up by the plant and transfers into the pollen [bee food], which then kills or disables the immune systems of both the bee and those it takes the food to in the hive. The European Union is banning all classes of neonicotinoids, and, thank goodness, at least one U.S. city has banned its use in Washington State.

Properly dispose of:

Actara, Platinum, Helix, Cruiser, Adage, Meridian, Centric, Flagship, Poncho, Titan, Clutch, Belay, Arena, Confidor, Merit, Admire, Ledgend, Pravado, Encore, Goucho, Premise, Assail, Intruder, Adjust and Calypso.

Copy this and print it, take it to your local garden center, and tell the store manager that he needs to refuse to stock the shelf with these products. Corporate greed is not worth our food source!”

Thank you, Anna, for keeping us informed and for teaching us better ways of gardening.

And to our customers, thank you for your support of locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally!

We’ll see you Wednesday at the Market!

Thanks,

Beverly

Farmer Updates

Tammy of Burnell Farms has listed Arugula, Broccoli, 2 kinds of Cauliflower, 2 types of Kale, Romaine Lettuce and Swiss Chard and Carrots!

The Veggie Patch is still providing a good selection of wonderful fresh Winter veggie offerings.

I spoke with Andrew last Tuesday and he will be sending some heirloom seedlings to the Markets this week. They will also be listed on the Markets starting next week!

Doug of Doug’s Garden has 5 Veggie Boxes available on the Lilburn Market. In addition, he has added 1# bags of Spring Mix Lettuce, Young Spinach and Spicy Lettuce Mix! He assured me that he will be putting his offerings on the Crossfit and Hamilton Mill Markets very soon!

Doug has one of my favorite plants in his offerings again this week. Mountain Bells! Although I am a Texas-Bluebell-kind-of-girl, (owing to the fact I am from the Lone Star State), I love the beauty and symmetry of Mountain (Blue)Bells! The picture was taken by Doug in his garden. Impressive!

When adding Mountain Bells or any other woodland perennials to your landscape, always plant them with companions that can take over when the early spring plants lose their luster. It’s important to have a multi-layered garden to keep year-round interest. Hostas, for instance, will just begin to shine by the time these bluebells are done.

Raspberry Plants! Doug also has listed Raspberry plants on the Market this week! Be sure and check them out! You could have your own Raspberries this year! Marie got some on Thursday – bet planting was on Chuck’s “Honey Do” List this weekend!

Note to Hamilton Mill Market Members
If you would like to order a Mountain Bluebell Plant or Raspberry plant(s), please contact Maryanne at 404-432-4337.

Be sure and check out the wonderful meat selections available from B&G Farms, Joyful Noise Acres Farm and Carrell Farms for delicious offerings of grass-fed, pastured Beef, Chicken and Pork and Water Buffalo. Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed.

Easter is just around the corner! Serving Lamb for our family dinner was always a Easter tradition for us! If you are interested in Lamb, please contact Maryanne at 404-432-4337. White Gates Farm near Butler, Georgia has Lamb offerings.

Lamb

Lamb Chops at $15.00/lb
Ground Lamb at $10.00/lb
Neck Bones at $3.50/lb
Stew Meat at $8.00/lb
Shoulder Roasts at $11.00/lb
Whole and Half Legs at $10.50/lb
Lamb Ribs at $11.00/lb

Please email Maryanne at heirloomlivingmarket@gmail.com or call 404-432-4337 to place an order for pickup at Market.

Doug and Melissa of Doug’s Wild Alaska Salmon brought some Alaskan Wild Caught Salmon and some Halibut. Quantities are very limited!

My Daily Bread supply us with fresh, organic baked goods that are yummy! Be sure and check out Dabrielle’s offerings this week. We never know what will be brought for the Farmers’ Sale Table, so be sure and place an order for what you want so you are not disappointed. Several folks asked for Tortillas this week and there were none on Market Day – just sayin’…

And… for Gluten Free Folks, Bakery on Brooks has got you covered! Marie has mastered some phenomenal gluten free recipes that will allow you to enjoy baked goods again! She has also added Paleo Energy Bites to her offerings! Wow! They are phenomenal! A great after workout treat or wonderful for the children at their sports activities! She has 4 varieties: Chocolate Cherry Nut, Hazelnut Oat, Orange Almond and Raw Apple Pie! NEWS FLASH: Marie just added Almond Joy Bites!

In addition, her Chocolate Chip Cookies are AMAZING! They taste just like the homemade Toll House Cookies your Grandmother or your Mom used to make! The difference? No gluten and all organic ingredients!

“Gummies” Made with Pastured Beef gelatin, organic juice and with or without magnesium will make their debut this week at the Markets. These little gems are a perfect protein pick-me-up after you finish your workout! Flavors available will be Blackberry, Apple, Grape and Elderberry! Information about the benefits of gelatin and magnesium will also be available.

Did you know that 80% of the population is deficient in magnesium? I know that I am — and since I am not particularly fond of the powered magnesium supplements (that get mixed with water)and the capsules are not as easily absorbed and used by our bodies, these little ‘gummies’ are the perfect way for me to get this much needed mineral – and the gelatin promotes good gut health as well as rebuilding collagen!

Cara of Golden Farms has Duck Eggs available! Get your order in early because there is a limited supply! I made French Toast this morning and will use them in baking some bread later today!

Dena from Good Shepherd Herbals has her Herbal Blood Pressure Tonic Tea on special again this week! She has added her Stomach Tonic also! Know someone with High Blood Pressure? I have heard some really good things from folks who are using this tea. I have used the Stomach Tonic for tummy issues and bloating and have gotten great results! The Tranquility Blend is still my favorite nightly choice for tea – topped with a little coconut oil. It helps me relax, turn off the stresses of the day and fall asleep quickly!
Dena’s Wise Woman Tea Blend/Tonic ~ Are you looking for a delicious iced tea to be enjoyed on a warm spring or summer day? Fourteen organic herbs make up this tasty and refreshing tea blend; naturally high in calcium and supportive to the endocrine system, this herbal tea blend was formulated for woman over 35 but men like it too. It is a quite tasty tea!

In addition to all of their Honey varieties, Dances With Bees has Creamed Honey back on the Market! In Plain, Cinnamon or Cherry, it is perfect on toast! Yummy treat! I can once again sing the praises of Patti’s Gardener’s Friend Soap since it is back on the Market! It is great exfoliator and wonderful soap to use after being out in the Garden or working in the Garage! It REALLY gets all the dirt and leaves your hands soft! Patti has her Botanical Body Oil on Special this week! I haven’t tried it yet; however, I am sure that like her other body care products it is fantastic! Specify LAVENDER or ORANGE, SAGE & VANILLA essential oil blends in comments when ordering.

Tatting Class

Mo of Mo’s Tat’s and Stitches is offering 1 hour classes at both the Lawrenceville and Lilburn Market locations during pickup! If you are interested and cannot attend either session, please contact Monique directly at hueyhome@msn.com or by calling 770-825-6928.

Tatting is a traditional form of crafting lace by hand using thread and shuttles. A few simple knots can be used to create intricate and complex designs. Mo learned to tat from her mother, who was taught by her grandmother. Tatting has become a nearly-lost art form, and she hopes to foster an awareness and appreciation for this lovely, intricate craft. Be part of tatting’s revitalization by learning to create your own lovely pieces to display and share with others.
Learn from someone who makes this look EASY!

In this tutorial, you will receive one-on-one instruction from Mo; “class size” is limited to three students per session so there will be plenty of time for individual instruction, guidance, correction, and support. You will learn the basic knot (double stitch) in both a chain and a ring; decorative picot; basic join; and reading a basic tatting pattern. You will also be provided with a basic pattern to practice at home.

More information can be found in the Class Offering on the Market!

… this and that…

You are spending your monies for LOCAL products and supporting the Farmer as well as the local economy. Be sure that you are not getting produce that is from GMO seeds or grown using conventional herbicides, fungicides and pesticides!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive and…

We are ‘all about’ Buying Local! Be sure that the Farmer you purchase from at your Traditional Market is growing his own produce, is using sustainable, Organic or Certified Naturally Grown growing practices and will allow you to visit the Farm! Some Markets allow ‘resellers’ and most Traditional Markets are made up of conventional as well as Organic or Certified Naturally Grown growers! You are spending your monies for LOCAL products and supporting the Farmer as well as the local economy. Be sure that you are not getting produce that is from GMO seeds or grown using conventional herbicides, fungicides and pesticides!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive and…

Green Fork Farmers Market:  Weekly Product List

Dear Green Fork Farmers Market Customers,

Now it really seems like spring, and we are bringing on our great spring products!

NEW this week: Green fork farm has baby chicks for sale or for rent! Start your egg-laying flock with these sexed pullet chicks. If you aren’t ready for that, you can rent them for a week—they come with everything you need except a lamp, including instructions. Great spring activity for the kids and for the whole family, and after a short time you get to send them back to a free-range flock to live out their egg-laying years.

Green Fork Farm now has fresh chives ready for you to flavor all your favorite spring dishes.

Adams Acres on Clear Creek has new beef and pork listings this week. Their pork chorizo is delicious—great for breakfast burritos, tacos, nachos, enchiladas, casseroles, tortilla soup, cheese dip, and more. Serve with Green Fork Farm salsa. Try Adams Acres’ ground beef and ground pork as well, it’s time to start getting those burgers out on the grill! Top with sauteed Shiitake mushrooms, also from Adams Acres. They also have dried Shiitakes and mushroom powder, great for soups, stews, sauces, stocks, and casseroles.

It’s time to plant Tuberose bulbs from Plentygood Farms. Get these now and get them in the ground for their great beauty and amazing fragrance in the summer.

Eggs are in full swing right now. Hens from all of our farms are free range on pasture and able to feast on grass, weeds, worms, and bugs, and they are out enjoying the sunshine. Some are fed conventional feed, some organic grains, and some no soy or corn, so you have lots of choices. We also have duck eggs available from pastured ducks fed organic grains.

It’s lamb season too, and BlackSheep Ranch has a great selection of pastured, grass-finished lamb for special holiday celebrations and for any other day.

Chicken Moon Farm has whole pastured chickens available. You have to try one with our Spring Chicken recipe that was just published in the spring issue of Edible Ozarkansas magazine. You can get a copy of the new issue at the market.

Wren Thicket Market is still offering their beautiful gourmet salad mix, full of tasty and nutritious greens. Get it while it lasts!

Figgieville got a new shipment of olive oil last month, and you won’t believe how amazing it is. Dress your greens with it and top with Figgieville’s gourmet brine-cured olives direct from the grower in California. Heaven!

Dandelion Peace Flower Botanicals has created lots of different varieties of herbal soaps for you this winter. If you’re a gardener, you will need this, plus their muscle salve, lip balm, and moisturizer to make it through the spring planting season. They also have artisan body oils, facial elixirs, mouthwash, and sugar scrubs available.

Don’t forget your pets this spring! We have all natural pet food and dog bones for your little friends to keep them healthy and happy.

Place your order from now until Monday at midnight. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday from 4-7 pm when you come to pick up your goodies. We’ll be in the Breezeway at Nightbird Books, 205 W. Dickson St in Fayetteville, rain or shine. We’ll also have some products available for sale on our tables.

Market News

Welcome back to another week of locally grown and made produce.

Rocky Glade Farm returns this week with their spring greens. Word from Julie is berries may be coming very soon. Farmer Brown’s hydroponic lettuce is really making an appearance on the Market. If you are into making salads at this time of year, be sure to add Bloomsbury Farm alfalfa or clover sprouts on top.

As the weather warms, people start breaking out their grills. Meadow Branch Beef, Wedge Oak Farm and West Wind Farms have plenty of products that are perfect for grilling.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! Here is a simple recipe using Market produce that I found courtesy of Yummly and Clean Eating. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, this simple mealtime solution is full of flavor and nutritious leafy greens. You can find the recipe here.

Sunny Eggs with Asian Greens

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 tsp coconut oil, divided
2 cloves garlic, minced
6 cups roughly chopped dark leafy greens (TIP: Try any of these in any combination: dandelion greens, spinach, kale, collard greens, bok choy, Swiss chard and arugula.)
2 tsp peeled and chopped fresh ginger
1 tbsp low-sodium tamari
1/2 tsp sesame oil
2 large eggs
Sriracha hot sauce, optional
Fresh ground black pepper, optional

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a nonstick wok or large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tsp coconut oil on medium-high. Add garlic, greens and ginger and sauté, stirring constantly, until garlic and ginger are fragrant and greens are wilted. Remove from heat and divide among serving bowls. Drizzle with tamari and sesame oil, dividing evenly.

2. Return wok to medium-high heat and add remaining 1/2 tsp coconut oil. Crack eggs into a small bowl and gently slide eggs into wok. Cook until bottoms are golden brown and whites are just firm and opaque throughout and yolks are runny.

3. With a spatula, gently slide eggs over top of greens, dividing evenly. If desired, top with Sriracha and pepper, to taste.

(TIP: If you have 1 to 2 cups leftover whole grains or pasta on hand, feel free to heat them up and toss them into your bowls before you add the greens for an extra hearty treat!)

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

John
