South Cumberland Farmer's Market:  Market Blog

Earlier this evening there appears to have been a problem with the blog that is sent out when the market opens. We’re not quite sure what happened, but were able to re-send it a few minutes ago.

Sorry about the confusion!

Farmer Updates

Tammy of Burnell Farms has listed Arugula, Baby Spinach, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, 3 kinds of Cauliflower, 2 types of Kale, Romaine Lettuce and Swiss Chard.

The Veggie Patch is still providing a good selection of wonderful fresh Winter veggie offerings and have fresh Herbs listed as well!

The Heirloom Seedlings that were ordered and delivered last week were healthy and impressive! Andrew is offering a slight discount if you would like to order a ‘flat’ containing 18 seedlings (can be an assortment). Discount will be taken when you pick up your order. There are 6 or 7 tomato varieties listed! Get your trowels ready — it is time to plant! They have listed some heirloom herb seedlings also, so don’t forget to check those! There will be a limited number of seedlings available at Market pickups this week; however, if you want something specific, it is best to place an order. I will be ordering a variety to include lots of Romas!

I spoke with Vicky Fry of Fry Farm last Friday and she was planning on having items listed on the Market this week — until Mother Nature stepped in — and changed things! Vicky anticipates that she will list some offerings in the next week or two providing the weather cooperates.

Doug of Doug’s Garden has 5 Veggie Boxes available on the Lilburn Market. In addition, he has added 1# bags of Spring Mix Lettuce, Young Spinach and Spicy Lettuce Mix! He assured me that he will be putting his Veggie Box offerings on the Crossfit and Hamilton Mill Markets very soon! He usually brings at least one Box to each Market for the Farmers’ Sales Table, so if you are interested, get to Market early!

Remember Watsonia Farms — you know, the great folks we got those wonderful Organic Peaches from last summer? (I am still enjoying the ones I froze while they were in season last summer!) Why am I talking about Watsonia now? It is not nearly time to think about Peaches — yes, yes, I know that – but what about Strawberries? Soon, my friends…very soon. I spoke with Brandon and we should be seeing Strawberries offered in a couple of weeks! I am thrilled! I will be getting some to freeze; however, I am going to try my hand at dehydrating some also! Of course I will be enjoying lots of fresh, juicy berries as soon as we get them! Watch the Newsletter for further information!

Be sure and check out the wonderful meat selections available from B&G Farms, Joyful Noise Acres Farm and Carrell Farms for delicious offerings of grass-fed, pastured Beef, Chicken and Pork and Water Buffalo. Both Golden Farms and Rocky Acres offer fresh eggs from pastured chickens fed organic, soy and GMO free feed.

If you are interested in Lamb, please contact Maryanne at 404-432-4337. White Gates Farm near Butler, Georgia has Lamb offerings.

Lamb

Lamb Chops at $15.00/lb
Ground Lamb at $10.00/lb *
Neck Bones at $3.50/lb
Stew Meat at $8.00/lb
Shoulder Roasts at $11.00/lb
Whole and Half Legs at $10.50/lb
Lamb Ribs at $11.00/lb

Please email Maryanne at heirloomlivingmarket@gmail.com or call 404-432-4337 to place an order for pickup at Market. *At the present time, there is no ground lamb available. Linda is in England and no processing will happen until her return at the end of the month. I will let you know when it becomes available.

Doug and Melissa of Doug’s Wild Alaska Salmon brought some Alaskan Wild Caught Salmon and some Halibut. Quantities are very limited!

My Daily Bread supply us with fresh, organic baked goods that are yummy! Be sure and check out Dabrielle’s offerings this week. We never know what will be brought for the Farmers’ Sale Table, so be sure and place an order for what you want so you are not disappointed. Dabrielle’s Challah looked fabulous this past week and many ordered for Easter! In fact, Marie ordered one; however, Chuck’s birthday was Thursday and he opted for Challah instead of cake!

Gluten Free? Bakery on Brooks has got you covered! Marie has mastered some phenomenal gluten free recipes that will allow you to enjoy baked goods again! She has also added Paleo Energy Bites to her offerings! Wow! They are phenomenal! A great after workout treat, wonderful for the children at their sports activities or when you just want a little something! She has 5 varieties: Chocolate Cherry Nut, Hazelnut Oat, Orange Almond, Raw Apple Pie, Almond Joy Bites and her newest addition – Banana Bread Bites!

In addition, her Chocolate Chip Cookies and Chocolate Chip Oat Cookies are AMAZING! They taste just like the homemade Toll House Cookies your Grandmother or your Mom used to make! The difference? No gluten and all organic ingredients!

Marie will be on vacation next week! She will not be at Markets from April 29 thru May 1st! Be sure and stock up on goodies this week so you are caught short when she is gone!

Cara of Golden Farms has Duck Eggs available! Get your order in early because there is a limited supply! I missed getting any this week – so sad – my bread will not be the same without them! I saw that many people took advantage of the special that Cara had last week. Sorry I did not mention it in the Newsletter! (I missed it!)

In addition to all of their Honey varieties, Dances With Bees has Creamed Honey back on the Market! In Plain, Cinnamon or Cherry, it is perfect on toast! Yummy treat! Have you seen the Blackberry Mead Vinegar Jay has listed in his offerings! WOW! It makes a great salad dressing!

this and that…

A large part of my responsibility as the Market Manager is doing my best to make sure the Market has diversity in its offerings as well as adhering to the Grower Guidelines. This means that I am consistently talking to Farmers about our Market, visiting other Markets and talking to other Market Managers, from both the ‘locally grown’ and the ‘traditional’ Farmers’ Markets about Farmers, new products offered and how we can provide the best for our Members.

Some Markets have more stringent requirements than others, but we all want to ensure that what is offered to our Members is fresh, local, seasonal and of the best quality. Heirloom Living Market’s Grower Guidelines have stipulations that restrict any conventional growers, the use of chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, hormones, soy and GMO’s. All Farmers are thoroughly ‘vetted’, licensing checked and growing practices examined. A relationship is established with the Farmer.

Although you are buying directly from the Farmer, the Market is the conduit that connects us all. It is of the utmost importance to me that you know that you can trust that each and every Farmer adheres strictly to the Grower Guidelines established for the Market. Farms are visited periodically and I am in constant communication with each Farmer. Please know that you are welcome and encouraged to contact the Farmer to ask questions or arrange a visit any time and they will welcome you with open arms. Of course if I can be of any help, please let me know.

Spring is here! Easter is tomorrow. I believe it is a time for Nature to be ‘reborn’ – a time for me to rejoice in the love of God who gave His only Son for my salvation. I wish you all a peaceful and blessed day!

FYI — No, The Black Lab does not get an Easter Egg Hunt! Maybe a few extra Liver Treats or a raw bone!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive and…
