Today is Flag Day! Fly our Flag today in honor of our country and the brave men and women that have fought for over 200 hundred years for our freedom. Our National Anthem is The Star Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 as a poem entitled “Defense of Fort McHenry” The poem was later put to the tune of The Anacreontic Song by John Stafford Smith, modified somewhat and named “The Star Spangled Banner”. It was proclaimed our National Anthem by Congress when Woodrow Wilson was president in 1931.

This morning as I placed the flag in its holder, I had a flashback to my childhood. We flew the flag everyday in front of our home. It was a privilege and a much sought after honor to participate in raising (and lowering) the flag each day with one of the parents and say the “Pledge of Allegiance”. I spent many Summers attending Fort Scott Camp, outside of Cincinnati, Ohio and can remember being the youngest camper in the Color Guard for Flag raising and lowering because I knew how to fold the flag! Please take a moment to listen to the words of the 4th verse of The Star Spangled Banner, reflect on the words and proudly display our Flag!
