Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  The JNA Farm market is open for ordering.

Good morning,
The market is open for ordering until Monday at 8:00pm. Again, we have so many wonderful food items to choose from. These next few weeks are busy for many of you getting ready for children to go back to school but don’t let healthy meals drop off, baked parmesan zucchini sticks, oven roasted potatoes, crock pot chicken are all easy, filling and nutritious.
Jackie’s Friendly Baking makes Cranberry Walnut Millet bars that will fill empty tummies and keep them full for a while. Add a glass of milk and nut butter and you are good until lunch. Take advantage of all the wonderful vegetables and do a chopped salad, divide it into jars and store in the refrigerator for on the go meals. Dressing is easy with Home Appetit Olive oil, balsamic vinegar and toasted Spice blends.

If you are purchasing milk, please remember to clean your jars very well and make sure they are dry before they get to the farm. If they have condensation in them, they are not dry, will harbor mold and will get returned. Our milkman is a stickler for cleanliness!

Thank you for supporting locally grown. We look forward to seeing you Wednesday.

Blessings,
Mary Beth

ALFN Local Food Club:  In Memory of Nao

Friends,

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the unexpected passing of one of our co-founders, Nao Ueda. She was an advocate of sustainability, a champion of social justice, and a pillar in the local food community. She will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

The outpouring of love and support in memory of Nao has truly been an inspiration. She has been a mentor and leader for so many of us and is proof of the immense difference one person can make when they fight for what they believe in. Thanks for everything you’ve done to make this city a better place, Nao.

The market is still open 7 years later because of the strong foundation that Nao laid.

A dear friend that has recovered from depression urged that one of the worst things we can do with mental illness is to not talk about it. So please, if you or anyone you know is depressed or suicidal, reach out, and know that there is always help.

Finally, I leave you with a dear friend’s inspirational words:

- Alex Handfinger

Remembering Nao —

It is incredibly painful to lose a friend. The pain is heightened when an amazing person takes her own life. As many others have said, let us follow her example, and do all we can to save the earth.

Suicide seems senseless, even stupid, to the observer. But I know that to those of us living with depression, the option at times may seem like the only choice left – for unfortunate souls who don’t realize that there is help and hope, for those who have tried to get help and failed because our mental health care system is broken, and for those who have not responded to or not tolerated treatments that aren’t complete cures, and don’t help everyone. I know whereof I speak. Thirty years ago, I was depressed and suicidal. I didn’t think I had a mental illness. I didn’t have hope at first, but was encouraged by loved ones and coworkers to get treatment. What can we do to help others? Learn about mental illness and suicide prevention. Be curious and care about others’ welfare. Don’t stigmatize mental illness, talk about it. Vote for candidates who support parity in insurance coverage for mental health treatment. And when we mourn the loss of those we care about to an awful illness, get up the next morning and do what we can to make the world a better place.

Champaign, OH:  County Fair

County fair, county fair,
Everybody in town’ll be there
So come on, hey we’re goin’ down there…(Bruce Sprinsteen-County Fair)

That’s right…just like Bruce sings, it’s County Fair time!!

Bruce can croon like no other about small town life, a love of local, a love of small town spirit.

I once had the ultimate pleasure of having Bruce on one of my flights back in my flight attendant days. I had a lot of celebs, a lot of rock stars, etc. But, a few just really always stood out as top notch, the real deals, class acts. He was one of them. I remember it was a long flight…California to New Jersey. An all nighter. I was working first class. One guy was a total jerk from the moment he entered the cabin. He was making it an unbearable flight. He didn’t like the scotch on the rocks that I offered him because it didn’t have a lemon shaving. As I returned to the galley to SHAVE A LEMON, I passed by Bruce’s seat. He leaned over, and in a hushed voice, told me to brush it off. I was too pretty to let anyone take my smile. Ok…crush, crush, crush…lol. BUT…just the fact that he could be that real, that local, that down home, made this girl’s evening.

So, this song is perfect to kick off our weekly market during our own county fair week! What a perfect way to display our local pride, our local customs, our local love.

While everyone is out supporting this very lovely county fair, remember that your market manager is here, with the market open, full of local pride and love, taking orders for your week!!

Take it all in, this week…enjoy every minute of what our county fair has to offer. Support your farmers, your producers, your growers, the kids, the exhibits, the pride, the excitement! It’s the best of the best in what our little local county has to offer!

Give it the same pride and love that Bruce sings about…the same pride that he bestowed on this girl, many years ago.

And, in between your fair visits, judging, participating, think of us and all that we can do to make your fair week even better!! Get your orders in so all you have to do is breeze through on next Thursday, to pick it all up…

I open the market, once again, to the vibe of local love…

Peace and Love,
Cosmic Pam

*MESSAGE FROM MARYS PEEPS
“I thought it would be nice once a month to draw a name from every order I get in that month and at the end of the month for that last order, pick one of my products and give it to that drawn number. IT WOULD BE A RANDOM DRAW but someone among my customers would receive something free. I also would like to add some fresh herbs bundles occasionally to people who have ordered herbs in the past. My herbs needs thinning and I would like to share them! I am a sharing person and I appreciate my customers very much and would like to show them that. I would send a personal message to them for a month with orders so that this is what I will doing till after Christmas. Its my own way of appreciating my customers.”
THANK YOUMARYS PEEPS” for her hard work, dedication and true example of taking great care of her customers!

Farm to Table Recipes

HOME COOKED PURPLE HULL PEAS
“Purple hull peas are very filling served on top of rice for a light lunch. They are usually eaten as a side veggie with a serving of cornbread nearby. Whether seasoned with just salt & pepper, or a load of spices or accompanied with a ham bone or salt pork, any way they’re cooked, they’re good eats! I really enjoy the natural flavor of the peas. So, my recipe for cooking them is very simple & easy.” Simple Daily Recipes

HERE’S ALL IT TAKES

2 pounds fresh shelled purple hull peas
2 garlic cloves, whole
1 tablespoon oil or bacon drippings
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
enough water to cover peas in the pot
Place all the ingredients in a large pot over medium high heat. Make sure you have enough water to cover the peas with 2 inches of water. After the water comes to a boil, cover with a lid, reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours.

Set your timer for the first hour and check the water level on the peas. Add more water if necessary, you want at least 1 inch of water above the peas. Cover with lid, again, and set the timer for the last hour.
