Citrus County Locally Grown:  January 24th 2012

Hello,
It really does not seem possible that the first month of the New Year has just one week left to go.

This week do checkout the meat and egg specials. We also welcome Fox Hollow Farm with their “Naturally Colored” eggs. Yes these are laid that way by the chickens. Sometimes these chickens are called Easter Egg Chickens. Please do note that as these eggs are not processed in a government inspected facility they must be marked “Not for Human Consumption. Animal Feed Only”.

Bread fresh from The Bakery in Dunnellon is always good. The Wellness loaf is very light and features Pumpernickel and Multigrain seeds.

This warmer weather should see Strawberries and Lettuce return next week.

Market is open and will close Wednesday morning.

Thank you for choosing us as a source for your healthy food.

See you at Pickup time

Good Morning,

Sharea listed some new soups & salads over the weekend. Just look under “Prepared Foods” to check out her latest selection!

Kellogg Valley & North Pulaski had a little broccoli left as of last night. It’s moving as fast as the eggs!

We opened early on Friday because I was on my way out the door to the Southern SAWG Conference at the Peabody. There were some great speakers and I came away with a lot of information that I will spend the week reviewing and then share with you later!

Hope you have a wonderful Monday!

As always, please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions or concerns.

The Cumming Harvest:  Please support the Forsyth county Beekeepers!

RECENT UPDATE: More info about the meeting tomorrow…

Bill Dunn and the Forsyth County Beekeepers Club, were asked by Commissioners Amos to help provide direction regarding beekeeping in Forsyth Co. A committee was formed and have been working to provide factual information about the backyard beekeeper. This committee met with Mr. Tom Brown, Planning Director, Jan. 18th to provide him with our proposal. Commissioner Amos was scheduled to attend but could not make it. That evening, Mr. Brown invited us to attend the meeting on the 24th and we have been given a chance to give our presentation to the full board at that time. Nicholas Weaver has talked with several lawyers and their advice to him has been to make this a legal action. This is the action he has decided to take and I will support him as I think he truly believes he has been unjustly treated. However it is the committees feeling that the best action is through education and effective dialog and this is the approach we will take. To that action the committee will be wearing our Forsyth County Beekeeping shirts which are either white or green, not yellow, when we make our presentation to the Forsyth County Commissioners on Tuesday January 24th.
For more information about Nicholas Weavers petition, please visit
“http://www.change.org/petitions/let-georgia-homeowners-keep-honeybees”

There is a closed Board of Commissioners meeting next Tuesday, January 24, at 2 p.m. The public and press are welcome to attend, however will not be able to make commentary.

It is VERY important that the beekeepers in Forsyth County, GA are supported at this meeting, as our case is being discussed that day. We are asking that ANYONE who is willing and able to get to downtown Cumming at that time PLEASE come to show your support in a YELLOW shirt/jacket/etc.

If you want more information or if you want to let us know you’ll be there, please don’t hesitate to email us at keepbeesinforsyth@gmail.com.

The meeting will be held at the Commissioners’ Meeting Room on the second floor of the Administration Building, 110 East Main Street, Cumming. The agenda should be posted at the end of today: http://www.forsythco.com/meetagend.asp?InfoType=agendas

Recipes

Mexican Chicken Corn Chowder

Grace found this recipe and made it for dinner the other day. It is fabulous! It’s definitely my new favorite soup. When I had leftovers, I crushed up some tortilla chips on top. It was great!!

1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chx breast
1/2 cup chopped onion
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
3 T. butter
2 chx bouillon cubes
1 cup hot water
1/2-1 t. ground cumin
2 cups half and half cream
2 cups (8oz) Monterrey jack cheese
1 can (16oz) cream style corn
1 can (4oz) chopped green chiles, undrained
1/4-1 t. hot pepper sauce
1 medium tomato, chopped
Fresh cilantro, optional

Cut chx into bite size pieces. In a dutch oven, brown chicken, onion, and garlic in butter until chx is no longer pink. Dissolve the bouillon in hot water. Add to pan along with cumin. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for five minutes. Add cream, cheese, chiles, corn and hot pepper sauce. Cook and stir over low heat until the cheese is melted. Stir in tomato. Serve immediately, garnish with cilantro if desired.

Market News

Hello Everyone!

Hopefully everyone realized that they didn’t get an email last week. I simply forgot! Things were pretty chaotic (more than usual) and I completely forgot to send out the email. “Thanks” to those of you who remembered to order anyway!

Farmer Grey has some turnips on the market. These are not the greens, but root part. I’m sure they’re delicious. They’re great to add to soups this time of year.

Ann Brown has added a beautiful looking Italian Creme Cake this week. The perfect ending to a great dinner, or a delicious dessert with coffee and company.

We have lots of greens, eggs, honey, baked goods, and meats still available, so check it all out and place your orders early for best availability.

Thank you and have a great week!

Seeya Thursday,

Risa

Thank you for eating locally!!

Coming Events

TUESDAYS BEGINNING JAN. 24 – 7-8 PM – SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES
Kevin Calkins will be teaching a 10-week course in Conversational Sign Language on Tuesdays beginning January 24 in the upstairs gathering room at The Celtic Cup Coffee House. Course fee is $50. Kevin will use the Vista “Signing Naturally” series in teaching. For more information, contact Denise Smith at 563-7733.

Kevin is the grandson of Angela Barclay Arnold. He is deaf and wants to raise awareness of the deaf. Although he lip reads well, that can be difficult when trying to follow a conversation among several people. Even people who do not speak English well can learn to communicate using sign language. And sign language counts as a second language on resumes and for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

SATURDAY, JAN. 28 – 2 PM – MISS TULLAHOMA SWEETHEART PAGEANT

Porterdale, GA:  Available for pickup Saturday Jan. 28th

Hi everyone-
I’m going to keep it brief because I literally just got back from the sustainable agriculture conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. (It was great!)

Since I was away I didn’t add a new vendor this week, but I have a couple in the works and will do a two-for-one in the coming weeks.

Sadly we are losing one of our favorite vendors this week. Ranger is leaving us for a lucrative position in the oil boom in North Dakota. Everyone will miss the pastry chef skills that he shared in the form of cheese straws, pies, and peanut brittle, but those of us who spent time with him each week are going to really miss his wry sense of humor and great talks about good food. Best of luck to you, Ranger!

Thank you all for being a part of this market, and please forward this to anyone who may be interested. Anyone can sign in, get the emails, and see what is available each week with no obligation.
Remember – ordering is open until Wednesday at 9pm and the pickup is from 10-11 on Saturday at the depot in Porterdale.
Thanks-
Helen

Athens Locally Grown:  Availability for January 26

Hi, all! I’m currently sitting at a truck stop just inside the Georgia state line, on my way back from the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group conference that was held this week in Little Rock, Arkansas. I’m not going to make it home until midnight or so, so I’ll go ahead and open the market for you now. I’d said that I’d tell you about the standards our growers have to meet to sell at Athens Locally Grown, but I’ll push that back to next week.

Thanks for your continued support of our market and all of our growers. It’s because of that support that we have the amazing variety we do here in mid-January. Only a few years ago, it was impossible to buy locally grown food during the winter, and now there are over 1000 products listed from several dozen growers. Happy eating!

BIG PROGRESS THIS WEEK
If you know someone who has not been to our Market for awhile you might want to send them a quick text and tell them that “the eagle has landed”. Please note that these new products have to be pulled off the Market each Wednesday at 9 AM but our Market will not close until Wednesday 9 PM. Please do read about this exciting change in Sunday’s weblog post “SPECIAL MESSAGE from Market Manager” to know just what to expect.

LOTS OF GREAT PRODUCTS
As we expand our offerings it will become more and more important for our customers to “browse the aisles” for great new finds. Enjoy your journey through our Market this week!

SUNDAY LECTURE Thanks to Deserie for her talk on “Natural Home Remedies for Pets”. There was so much great info on keeping our pets—and ourselves—more healthy! Plus more gorgeous weather… See lecture pics! Next week’s lecture by Clark Tibbits is definitely a “don’t miss it!” See details under UPCOMING EVENTS below.

New Growers

Welcome to NEW GROWER Suncoast Food Alliance who joins us this week with great products from chemical-free farmers just south of the Skyway. We welcome them aboard!

NEW GROWER Earthsong Gardens joins us this week. Bill Bilodeau, originator of the permaculture group in St. Petersburg, is now sharing his garden bounty with our Market customers. Welcome Bill!

HELP US FIND GROWERS FOR THIS MARKET Grower Qualifications: We want both large scale growers and backyard gardeners who use only organic methods in their farming process: composting, etc. They also do not use synthetic chemicals to either fertilize or to control pests in their garden. Our range of search is currently within Pinellas & Manatee Counties but we will consider other areas. This is needed to meet current customer demands UNTIL St. Petersburg growers are more able to subsidize Market needs. Local growers (St. Petersburg) are still our main priority and highest preference. We need EGGS too!

Volunteers Needed

*To help with administration of this Market. Qualifications needed: someone tech savvy on the computer, easily learns new software applications, has internet social networking skills, understands marketing concepts, and is available weekly 2 – 4 hours.
*To investigate the cost savings of making a 2.25 ton (approx. 9 yards) purchase of worm castings from Jane Maxwell for our Market Community. We already have a truck to make the trip!
*To help with packing and labeling orders on Thursday afternoons.
*To help with harvest weekly on Friday mornings from 8 – 10AM.
*To help with transplanting.
*To help with building raised beds.

Upcoming Events

SUNDAY LECTURE SERIES – DON’T MISS THIS on Jan. 29th, 2012 @2:30pm. PLEASE bring a chair. “Good Living in Hard Times” with Clark Tibbits. This talk continues to be one of the most important Lectures of our Series. In the past 30 years Clark Tibbits has raised a family and lived well while voluntarily keeping his spending and fossil fuel usage far below US averages and remaining free of debt.  He will share with you both the lessons from—and the fruits of—that experience as he leads a discussion on what you can do as individuals, cooperative groups and enlightened communities to determine your destiny in a post-oil world.  The way we travel, heat & cool our houses, eat and entertain ourselves, which has become habitual under cheap oil, will soon no longer be sustainable. This lecture will present you with alternatives to being dependent on debt and oil and prepare you for selecting those that harmonize best with your basic values.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
