DeForest, WI:  Availability for Week of September 7

The market is now open.

Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for September 10th, 2013

Hey Local Food Lovers,

Peas, fennel, sorrel, peppers, okra, potatoes, lots of asian greens, beans, these are just a few of the things you can find during early Fall growing Locally. There’s also a plethora for great cuts of chicken and pork right now (or a whole chicken too).

I’m extremely fortunate right now that my inlaws from Taiwan are here and incorporating all the excellent local ingredients into some Asian style dishes. Other than the freshness of the ingredients its all in the incredible sauces that are made in the wok. Don’t ask me to describe them because they are way over my head and skill level, but tonight we had a whole bunch of red peppers cut up with some of Mill Gaps baby corns (fresh baby corn sauteed in a wok is heaven), mushrooms, and just a strip or two of turkey bacon we had left over. Oh how I miss the local mushrooms that Julius Miller used to deliver. Oysters were my favorite.

The seasons are starting to turn as evidenced by more and more leaves in the streets, and all my watermelon vines giving it up for the season. That meant hauling nearly a dozen watermelons out of the garden this morning, clipping back the sweet potato vines to sautee for dinner and clipping the first small handful of okra that we’ve been sharing too generously with the deer. Deer love okra greens, and since I noticed they are listed on the market this week, perhaps you should try them too. Deer usually have pretty good tastes as they love sweet potato leaves and beet greens too. They come back for the same things again and again. Many of our customers (and that includes me) follow similar trends. For instance, I never get tired of Mill Gap’s padron peppers. It’s still tomato season and I’ve been eating them every week, every way I can think of, but my favorite is simply in between two slices of good bread with mayo and a little fresh ground pepper. We’ve got less than two months to enjoy such bliss. And if you don’t put tomatoes in your eggs, or as I do, cook the tomatoes first, then add the eggs, and then the cheese of course, then you’re missing out on the best way to have eggs with breakfast. My wife’s family does something similar only they eat it for dinner over rice with a little ketchup mixed in. It’s good!

Ok, gotta run. Order big this week….and

EAT WELL,
Justin, Chuck, Teri and Andrew

Market News

One of my favorite unintended benefits of Athens Locally Grown is how many people began buying some food through the market, then started a garden which expanded over time, and finally began selling their excess produce to other ALG customers. Quite a few of the 100+ growers listed here began this ay, and I’m sure we’ll see many more. If you think you might be one of them some day, here’s an event you’ll also be interested in:

The Oglethorpe County Extension Office is hosting an all-day “Small and Beginning Vegetable Farmers Workshop” on September 23rd. The workshop only costs $10 and includes lunch, and they’ll cover topics including what equipment, licenses, and time commitment you need to get started, the basics of organic vegetable production, and marketing and budgets. It’s possible to just dive in and figure things out as you go, but workshops like this can make that first year go so much more smoothly. If you’d like to attend this workshop, call the the Oglethorpe County Extension office at (706)743-8341 and they’ll save you a seat.

We’ve got 950 products listed this week, and I’ll let you get right to them. Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is open throughout the week here in Athens, and you can find more information about them here: www.athenslandtrust.org. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned have yet to open for the season, so far as I know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Cedar Grove Farm:  Cedar Grove Farm CSA availability for 9/10

Hello friends and neighbors,

Dylan and Caitlyn are on a vacation this week, so I’m filling in to open the market. We are working hard to transition to our Fall garden. Our potato season is done but other things are coming on. We have lots of sweet potatoes, winter squash and arugula while still getting good harvests of okra, summer squash and some tomatoes. The greens and kale are looking good but still need another week, although the rains are giving them a real boost.

Market is open. Hope you find something you like.

Regards, Farmer Jay

Market News

Hello!

This week we will be set up in a new location on the Trinity Church lawn. Instead of up under the trees, we will set up lower in the parking lot, immediately to your left as you pull in. We will be closer to the road, and more out of the way of the comings and goings of after school pick up. This was the site of the old produce tent that used to be set up there a few years ago.

There’s lots of beautiful flowers and produce this week! Sunny yellow marigolds are in, and make for a great Fall bouquet with sunflowers, zinnias, and other colorful flowers. There are also straight bunches of zinnias available, and of course the very sweet Sweet Heart bouquet.

Also we have some lovely greens in as the field crops shift into Fall crops. And don’t forget peppers! It is the pepper time of year! We also have a nice amount of tomatoes for you from Bountiful Blessings certified organic farm. This may be for one week only, so if you need a tomato final fix this is the time to do it!

This month, be sure to mark your calendars for The Southern Artisan Cheese Fest on Saturday, September 27th! This festival is put on by our very own Kathleen Cotter who owns The Bloomy Rind Cheese Shop. Tickets for the 4th Annual Southern Artisan Cheese Festival are on sale now! The festival is a unique chance to meet cheesemakers and food artisans from all over the region – and sample their delicious wares, of course. Wine and southern craft beers are included with your admission.

Sat, Sept 27th, 2-6pm
at the historic Neuhoff Building in Germantown (see the website for location map and details)
http://southerncheesefest.com/tickets/
Early Bird discount good though 9/7: eatmorecheese (good on VIP, Patron, and GA tickets)

Once again, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
