The Market is Open! How about an April Pumpkin Pie?
Greetings local food lovers!
The Market is Open!
Even though Halloween is a couple of seasons out, we’ve got pumpkins on the market this week from Holy Terror Farm!
Simply roast in the oven at 350 for about 1.5 hours, scoop out & puree the flesh and use the pumpkin puree in any of the following delicious dishes:
-Pumpkin swirl brownies
-Pumpkin soup…served in a pumpkin bowl!
-Pumpkin, sage & brown butter ravioli (tip: use wonton wrappers for speedier assembly)
BONUS! Collect, rinse and toast the pumpkin seeds for a healthy snack or salad topper!
And final reminder, if you haven’t already, please vote on Facebook for Local Farms First to receive a $5000 grant for training & outreach!

Upcoming Farm Tour: Sista Suzie’s Organic Garden
Sista Suzies started out as a small, backyard garden that grew & grew! The garden is located in College Park making it the closest producer we have in proximity to the Co-op. How’s that for local?
Farmer Susie and brother Greg are offering a free private farm tour to members and their guests on April 7, 2013 from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. Please contact Jackie McFadden (407-571-9602 / firstname.lastname@example.org) to register for this event.

Dear Market Customer,
We had an AWESOME week here at The Market! Attendance is continuously growing, and we expect a huge influx of new customers coming in as we approach springtime and our inventory increases with delicious LOCAL, ORGANIC, and NUTRIENT-DENSE products.
My freezer is pretty much emptied out from all the meat orders, and ready for our re-stock of nutritious Mother Earth Meats chickens coming this week!

Produce Boxes Pick-Up Tuesdays?
Many of you are requesting that I offer the produce boxes on Tuesday instead of Friday.
If you would like this, please fill out this form and let me know you’d purchase a produce box if it were available Tuesday during market pick-up. I will do a head count, and if we reach 24 orders for Tuesday pick-up, we will make it work.
Please don’t wait until the last minute and order your produce box for pick-up April 5th now.

Victory Garden Tour
40 people showed up for our victory vegetable garden tour! We traveled in a caravan to several gardens throughout the New Port Richey area to show off how you can start growing your own food today! We have decided to host these tours every quarter if you missed this one make sure to attend the next on sometime in Summer then again in Fall/Winter. The members of the co-op came together to host a meeting. We talked about the history of the co-op and started to envision a road map forward that we hope to release to everyone in the future as a well put together plan of action you can help volunteer to see happen. Some big ideas placed forward is in a years time having over 100 growers and hundreds of local products. Multiple pick up locations, Times, and days throughout both Pasco and Pinellas. A farmers market feeling at the Habitat store where we will have more hang out sessions and free education for the community to begin learning how to grow their own food. More outreach to the community about our co-op and how they can get involved. Later down the road 2-3 years out we can imagine getting our own retail location or farm growing food directly for our membership. What can you envision the co-op moving forward growing into? Please share your vision with us and participate by becoming a member today.

King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In the film, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.

Intimidated by all of those pesky greens that are really good for you? I am too! So, once again, Mary is going to rescue us and provide some delicious recipes!

Old 99 Farm, Week of Mar 24th 2013
Vegetables are growing fast in this warm weather. Have some new spinach this week as well as the regulars.
I have organic roasting chickens, about 5lb weights. Place your order with the www.old99farm.locallygrown.net website.
I have had no inquiries about buying kitchen gear, like mincers, grinders, utensils. the www.norpro.com website has lots to look at, but prices aren’t on line; you have to go to a retail site or even ebay to find.
Can you help me with some recyclables? I need plastic milk crates, grocery bags, and as always, egg cartons.
In a couple of weeks to a month, I’ll be taking down the woodshed beside the barn and replacing it with a new building for housing the freezers and sale of produce. I am asking for help in removing the contents to store elsewhere on the farm before demolition. This could take a day if there are enough hands. Please let me know if you could offer a couple hours.

This weekend we will be taking pre-orders for Wilderness Family Naturals products! http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/ Our buying club prices are significantly lower than their retail prices and include taxes, shipping and fees.
WFN is out of stock on a few items that we usually order such as the mayonnaise. I contacted them and they are having an emulsification issue and have hired an outside consultant to help them resolve this issue. They cannot give me a date when this product will be available again but they are hoping to have it soon.

Covenant Family Farms:
Covenant Family Farms is back on and will have their beautiful blue/green/brown free range eggs available weekly. They will also list any organic and organically grown fruits and vegetable they have on occasion as it becomes available.
Kombucha Tea (Single Brew Recipe):
For those interested, I put my Single Brew recipe in the “Recipes” section on the market site. I compiled a couple recipes and came up with one that worked for me when I first started making kombucha 5 years ago. It’s a great beginner recipe to get the hang of brewing this wonderful probiotic drink!
Upcoming Spring Break Events
I am coordinating 2 events during Spring Break week. This is a great opportunity for you to meet the farmers and vendors. Look for an Evite to come soon. These are kid friendly events and I hope you and your family can make 1 or both events! I will bring information about our co-op at both events so feel free to invite friends and family.
Great Harvest Bakery Tour and Vendor Tasting- April 8th at 3pm
Ray Boland, owner of Great Harvest Bakery in Duluth will give us a group tour of the bakery demonstrating the flour mill, sprouting grains, how they bake their bread. This is a wonderful educational experience for the kids (and adults) to see how their bread is made. Afterwards, we’ll have a few of our vendors do a tasting of their delicious items and/or a demonstration.
Family Fun Day at the Farm- April 10th at 10am-B&G Farm, Madison GA
Lynda from B&G Farm has offered to sponsor this year’s Family Fun Day! You will be able to see her animals and many acres of green pasture they graze on. Right now she has lots of baby piglets running around! For the kids, she’ll have her jumpy jump set up for them to play. Plan to bring a lunch and enjoy some time meeting her and hanging out on her farm. After lunch we’ll head to Johnston Family Farm in Newborn which is close to Lynda’s farm. Russell will give us a tour of his dairy and farm. This is a great opportunity to see where your food comes from and to meet the farmers that provide it.
