Rocky Glade Farm brings back pink eye purple hull peas to the Market.

Both Wedge Oak and West Wind Farms have plenty of products perfect for grilling this summer including pork ribs.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Gwinnett Locally Grown:  Sunday Market Reminder!

The Market is open Thursday at 9 – Monday at noon After that, ordering is disabled until Thursday morning. Pick up your order Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. only at Rancho Alegre Farm at 2225 Givens Road, Dacula, GA 30019. New to The Market? Learn about how it works here.

New Market Manager!

I wanted to let you know that effective Tuesday, August 4th, you will_have a new Market Manager, Iris Potter!
Iris worked the Market for a few weeks between Debbie and my transition. She is a wealth of knowledge and a bubbly, smiling face! She has worked with Athens Locally Grown and will be a wonderful asset to the Market! She will be at Market next Tuesday so please welcome her when you see her!

I may still see you from time to time while teaching workshops or doing doTERRA events on the farm. I want to say though, what a pleasure it has been to serve each and every one of you over the last year! Thank you for supporting us and being such wonderful customers!

Salmon Update!

What’s up with the Salmon?
The salmon are running and Bill from Back in Time Farm will be supplying Alaskan Wild Caught salmon through his son, Running Wild Alaskan Seafood, LLC. He has left for Homer, Alaska and will be back with salmon and have it posted for the Market opening on Thursday, August 6th. It will be open to order then but we will be notifying and watching for those who were on the list to make sure their orders are handled first. You may continue to order after the first week until the supply runs out. I’m being told that there may be a chance for a second catch to be added but not guaranteed yet. So if you are wanting salmon, I recommend purchasing while you have the chance.
This deliciously fresh salmon is carefully selected directly from the fishermen’s nets from the cold Alaskan waters before it ever enters the ship’s hold. Only the best is chosen to become part of " Running Wild Alaskan Seafood’s" premium offerings. The fish is immediately bled and iced down before making the short boat ride to the processor located in Homer, Alaska. Here it is quickly processed and flash frozen (to ensure freshness) then packed into coolers for the overnight trip to Georgia. This is the freshest salmon available without going to Alaska to catch it yourself. Red Sockeye salmon is packed with flavor and nutrition.
We are within a week or so of having this salmon at our very own market! The packages will be in a couple different ounce packages and range in prices based on $19.00 a pound.

If we don’t give them enough business, it’s hard for them to continue to deliver to us. Please let’s not let that happen! Tell your friends about us so we can keep the Growers supported as this is how they make their living.

Thank you to all of you who support Gwinnett Locally Grown!

Here is the complete list for this week.

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Bell

Mosey, rush, sashay, skip, or beam yourself over to ALFN’s market . We are open.

Local News & Reminders:

1. We are running low on printing paper for market invoices. If you or your business has a stack of paper with only one side printed, we would love to use the other side. Email me, and I can come and pick it up!

2. We are still seeking interested persons for the Treasurer and Governance positions on ALFN’s board of directors. Please corral these wild accountants and lawyers of Little Rock and drive them our way!

3. We are entering August this week. The death knell will sound for thousands of children as jingles for back-to-school sales reverberate through radio and T.V. commercials. However, August also marks a small change for ALFN in our membership payment structure. Remember, annual membership fees will remain $60, but those who choose to pay monthly will need to pay $7.50 per month. Volunteers on Saturdays will continue to receive either $5 credit on their account, or one month’s credit in membership fees ($7.50).

4. The Root Cafe is partnering with the Southern Center for Agroecology to lead three workshops on food preservation. The first one was this past week. However, you can still sign up for the other workshops. On August 20, the class will look at Fig & Jalapeno preserves; on September 24th, the class will investigate sweet pepper and cucumber pickling. Each class only costs $35. Preserve your spot here .

Reflection on Membership:

The relentless heat of central Arkansas has reminded me of those who have been suffering without rain for years. The extensive drought in California has large implications for America’s food system. California supplies more than half of the country’s fruit and veggies. With mandatory limits on water usage, residents and farmer’s have been put in a squeeze. Yet, alfalfa—a major export crop to countries like China—uses over 100 billion gallons of water totaling more water usage than any other food crop including almonds. Industrial agriculture has traded the logic of common sense for the logic of a capitalist system based only on profit. According to research, over half of California’s farmland was owned by absentee landlords by 2000. Although 90% of farms are owned by small stakeholders, those farms represent a fraction of total land owned by the 10% corporate agribusinesses.

From my perspective, this is a problem of food sovereignty. We need to democratize our food to safeguard our local agroecology and cultivate robust local food systems. I’m interested in what ALFN can do to be a component in developing food sovereignty for central Arkansas. As a hub for local food, we need to lay the cultural and physical infrastructure for a local food system. I invite you to rally behind this movement not with a simple one day protest, but a longer, steady protest. Invest in ALFN by organizing your food purchases throughout the year with local growers. Invest in ALFN through your membership not only as a paying customer, but an active member. We can grow this market to not only reach more individuals, but reach deeper into every month of the year for a four season market. Thanks and hold those memberships with pride!

Ode to Membership

O! how deeply delightful a melon rests on the tongue,
when the journey to my mouth is short and I know where it comes from

O! in honor of memberships, dollars and sense,
used in organizing food sovereignty and bulldozing the corporate absentee fence

Not everything is solved with a smile and a rhyming couplet,
but membership with ALFN is like an edible amulet

A badge, a protest sign, a vote for the democratization of local food,
a network, a node, a fellowship of foodies, an agro-urban brotherhood (and sisterhood).

Farm to Table Recipes

A Tomato Sandwich Worthy of a Little Bacon
Ingredients
3 slices bacon, cooked crisp, crumbled and rendered fat reserved
1 room temperature egg
1 clove garlic
1 avocado
Juice of half a lemon
3/4 cup vegetable oil
The Bacon-Avocado Aioli
Toasted slices of a good rustic Italian bread
The best tomatoes you can find, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
Salt and pepper
Notes / Directions
1. Process the bacon, egg, garlic, lemon juice and avocado in the bowl of a mini food processor until smooth. Add the vegetable oil and the rendered bacon fat through the holes on the lid slowly while continuing to process until very smooth and thick. Refrigerate for about an hour to thicken a bit more.

2. Slather as much of the aioli as you like on a slice of the toast. Top with a few slices of tomato and sprinkle with salt and pepper. I like these open face but if you like, slather a second piece of bread with more of the aioli and place on top.
