Champaign, OH:  Showing Some Love

It’s Tuesday!! It’s show us some love day!! AKA…we close the market at 10pm, tonight, and we want to feel the love!!

The week has been a crazy weather week, both cold, dreary, sunny, and warm. It’s confusing to know how to dress, how to plan, and what to eat.

We have the part about what to eat, totally covered!! We have a large market selection to meet all of your needs!!

Everything we offer can lean towards the lighter fare you may want on the warm sunny days, AND, we have more comfort items on the cold dreary days when you need warmth, and fuel for your soul.

Go, take a look, remember that you can do all of your weekly shopping, right here, right now. When you shop with us, you keep it local, you keep it real, you keep it nutritious…

I will see you at 10pm…go on, show us some love…

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder & News

Greetings ALFN members!

The market will be open for another 24 hours before I close and send all orders to our growers. Seize the opportunity and order.

Updates/News

1. The CANAS fundraiser at White Water Tavern has been cancelled due to booking problems. Stay tuned for an update on a new time.

2. I corresponded with Kent Walker this week and got the skinny on what is new. Kent’s cheese cave is full of cheese wheels. Air control is important in the aging of cheese and with more cheese in the cave, the air regulation has stabilized creating creamier cheeses. Kent also has new flights you can taste in his tasting room. Here is a list:

  • House Flight: All our cheeses
  • Fromage Blanc: Everything but cow cheese. Find all your Goat, Sheep, and Buffalo cheeses here.
  • The Orange Door: 4 – 5 different Types of Cheddar. Great beginner plate
  • Green Dragon: Stinky cheeses galore! Blues, Washed rinds, and soft ripened
  • The Monger: Cheese monger’s selection. Changes daily. Expect wild, fun creations here!

If you are interested in making a visit to the tasting room, check out their website for more information: http://www.kentwalkercheese.com/

3. For clarification, our recent change in monthly membership fees applies to all monthly payments from 1-11 months. Consequently, monthly membership fees are $7.50 unless a year is paid in full. Then, the charge is $60. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Cheers!

Martin's Farmstand:  Frost is not the end

The frost we had over the weekend is not the end for good local food. The leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula and cilantro all survived and look good. This is the time of the year that the late root crops such as beets, carrots and parsnip are at thier prime. And of course this is the time for apples, squash and so much more- the stand is still full. We harvested 20 bushel of peppers ahead of the frost along with the last of the beans. If you want to freeze or pickle peppers for the winter this is the last call for that. This is also a really good day to smile and say something kind to someone. Daniel

Manchester Locally Grown online farmers’ market will be open for ordering until Tuesday evening at 10 pm. See the section of this message entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

NEWS AND NOTES

What a chilly couple of days! With the very cool nights behind us, and some beautiful sunny days ahead, we will have a good opportunity to work outside, planting perennials for next spring’s bloom. Don’t forget Dogwood Valley Greenhouse‘s “Fall Special” on perennial and herb plants and ferns: Buy 3, get one of equal or lesser value at no charge. Please make a note on your order form of which plant you would like for free (name 3 choices).

Summer and fall vegetable production is still in full swing, and several of our farmers have a good selection on the market. White City Produce and Greenhouses has added cabbage this week. These other great vegetables are still available on our market from local growers: zucchini, tomatoes, summer squash, spinach, red potatoes, peppers, okra, lettuce, and cucumbers.

But our farmers’ market is not only about vegetables. Please take note of some of the seasonal items available this week: Live Water Kefir Grains and Square Bale Grass Hay from Triple B Farms; Ground Beef from Paccman Ranch; Scuppernong and Muscadine ciders, jelly, and fruits from White City Produce & Greenhouses.

We also have lots of our regular year-round items: perennial, herb, and fern plants, as well as a good selection of houseplants; local milk, eggs, and honey; pork and chicken cuts; dried herbs and fresh, as well as lots of homemade herbal products too.

(L to R) White Anemone and Single Pink Fringed Carnation, both now in bloom, from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, Bronze Muscadines and ‘Stonehead’ Cabbage from White City Produce & Greenhouses, Ground Beef from Paccman Ranch.

Important Ordering and Pickup Information

Ordering will be open until Tuesday at 10 p.m., and your order will be available for pickup on Thursday between 4:00 and 5:30 (note later pickup hours) at Square Books, 113 East Main Street, Manchester. We can also hold your order in the refrigerator till Friday, if it’s more convenient for you to pick it up between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. If you prefer to utilize this free service, please make a note on your order or call my cell at (931) 273-9708.

Thanks so much for your support of Manchester Locally Grown Market, and your friends and neighbors who have grown and produced these items. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We have more variety than many large Saturday markets, and our items will be in your hands on Thursday! Instead of fighting the crowds and getting up early to search for what you want at the Saturday market, check out the wonderful products our local growers have for you, from the comfort of your own computer.

We have some new farmers considering joining our market, if they can expect large sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends, calling their attention to the later pickup hours, which may be more convenient for them. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week.

Blessings,
Linda
