Augusta Locally Grown:  THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!

IT ALWAYS MAKES ME GIGGLE when people suggest that winter is a “slow time” for farmers, farmers markets and for Augusta Locally Grown activities. True, there’s less growing in the fields. But boy, there a TRUE WHIRLWIND of detailed planning, preparing and evaluating going on behind the scenes. Please consider volunteering this winter as we gear up for spring and summer and fall. There is no better way “to reap what we sow” than to be involved from the ground up. Many volunteer opportunities are listed below.

SAT, SUN, MON, JAN 16-18 – “MLK WEEKEND OF SERVICE” AT ICEBOX MINISTRIES’ CHILDREN’S TEACHING GARDEN – Come help build this teaching garden campus, designed for school children at Icebox Ministries in Harrisburg. Volunteer work goes from 9am-1pm each … lunch shared together afterwards. Get your church and other groups involved! RSVP to kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

MON, JAN 18 – MLK DAY OF SERVICE AT THE HARRISBURG VETERANS GARDEN – Just around the corner from the children’s garden at Icebox Ministries, there’s also a community garden going up for local military veterans. It will be the first ADA certified garden in Augusta, made specifically for disabled vets. This project is spearheaded by Angel Veggies and the Harrisburg Community Garden … and it’s all part of our collective “G.R.O.W. Harrisburg” Initiative to make this inner-city neighbor a healthy foods destination!

THU, JAN 21 – TEDX AUGUSTA SPEAKER DINNERALG is honored to work again with Chef Megan Alig of Creative Cuisine to provide a very local pre-event dinner for speakers next week. Farmers … if you’d like to donate some veggies or other ingredients to this event of movers and shakers, please let me know this weekend!

FRI, JAN 29 – TEDX AUGUSTA – We’re very excited to again play a part in helping with the TedxAugusta event in 2016. What a great way to promote local foods among our community’s deep thinkers. Specifically, we’re creating a “Pop Up Food Truck Event” right in the middle of Broad Street! We’re also working with Helms College culinary students to host a very local, very tasty morning break. Excited to announce that all our volunteer slots are filled. Big love to Leadership Augusta and our own board of directors for making that happen!

TEDX AUGUSTA TICKETS? Haven’t gotten your tickets yet? You’re in luck, because they’re still available but going fast. Go to tedxaugusta.com to sign up!

G.R.O.W. HARRISBURG SPEAKER … Yes … you heard right … GROW Harrisburg volunteer and Veggie Truck Market Logistics Manager Chris Shelley is one of the TEDx speakers!!!!

SAT, JAN 30 – VOLUNTEER WORKDAY AT ICEBOX MINISTRIES’ CHILDREN’S TEACHING GARDEN AND AT THE WESTABOU MONTESSORI PRESCHOOL TEACHING GARDEN – Come help build and improve these teaching gardens, both in the inner-city neighborhood of Augusta. Volunteer work goes from 9am-1pm … lunch shared together afterwards. Get your church and other groups involved! RSVP to kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

SAT, JAN 30 – 200 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT – We’re also kicking off our 2016 season for installing another 100 raised bed gardens at individual homes throughout Harrisburg! This will be done in partnership with Reid Memorial Presbyterian and other volunteers like YOU! Please email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to sign up!

SUN, JAN 31 – CROB MOB AT CLYDE’S FRESH PRODUCE IN GROVETOWN WITH THE SOUL CITY SIRENS – What’s a crop mob, you ask!? Good question! Imagine 30-40 volunteers, gathered for an afternoon on a farm, all volunteering their time to get something big done for the local farmer. This time, we’ll be planting dozens of fruit trees! And this event has a bonus … work alongside the Soul City Sirens Roller Derby Team who will also be volunteering that day! Of course, we’ll share a farm-fresh meal afterwards. Save the date! Time: 1pm-4pm for work, dinner
afterwards.

WED, FEB 3 – WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPS AT RED CLAY MARKET KICK-OFF DAY! – ALG will host a winter series of delicious, nutritious and just plain fun workshops at Red Clay Market in Evans, 5pm-6:30pm. Stay tuned for the list!

THUR, FEB 11 – 200 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT – Come help us install free raised bed vegetable gardens at individual families’ homes throughout the neighborhood of Harrisburg in Augusta. 9am-1pm. We feed our volunteers afterwards!

SAT, FEB 13 – 200 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT – Here’s a weekend opportunity to help us install free raised bed vegetable gardens at individual families’ homes throughout the neighborhood of Harrisburg in Augusta. 9am-1pm. We feed our volunteers afterwards!

THU, FEB 18 – 200 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT – Yep! We’re determined to get all these beds installed in time for spring planting! 9am-1pm.

Are you an educators interested in getting such a program started at your school! Text Kim at 706-288-7895 to get the enrollment link. The workshop is only $15, taught by top notch folks doing this nationwide!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open

Dear ALFN Members,

The market is open!

We are deep into January, but the market is still busting with beautiful produce. From Bok Choy to Cabbage to Arugula to Acorn Squash to Broccoli to Kale, there is a wide selection of fresh produce. We also have a wide selection of frozen goods that have sealed sealed summer inside.

Waste & Energy

In the same way our culture tends to hide and mask death from the living, perhaps for similar reasons, our living economy hides the waste of society in landfills seeded with grass. Waste is simply dormant energy awaiting transformation. The masses of bacteria and fungal communities are the miracle workers, but miracle workers are often viewed with the same suspicion as undertakers. Our society has cultivated a kind of mass phobia with bacteria and fungi and institutionalized discrimination towards all invertebrate communities. Yet, our unseen neighbors are what keep the revolving door of life spinning. They are resurrection workers, shamans guiding life back into birth.

Even the heinous products we forge can often be deconstructed and reconciled back into natural ingredients. I’ve been obsessed with fungi for a couple of years now. Mycologists continue to discover new fungi as well as new ecological functions of fungi. Scientists have found certain strains of fungi can breakdown oil and transform the long carbon chains into benign material. Or check out this video: Training Fungi to Eat Cigarette Butts. As the great “lovers of waste and death” (saprophytes), fungi take waste and recycle the energy back into ecosystems.

Do you know what else recycles energy in waste? Gardens. Our small, urban gardens take the substrates of waste and transform it into food and drink. The compost bin is both cemetery and birthing center. So, roll the stone away from our economic dead end, and let life come back from the grave. The gospel of gardeners suggests life comes from decomposition.

While I’m thinking about urban gardens, check out this Kickstarter for a community project called Earth Garden.

Have a great week and don’t forget to sign up for a Volunteer Spot
