Your Tullahoma Locally Grown Market is now open. Feel free to browse and select your items between now and Wednesday at noon.

Here is the link to the market: Tullahoma Locally Grown Market

Thank you for your support. Have a great day,
Fuel So Good Coffee Roasters

Heirloom Living Market Lawrenceville :  You still have time to order...Market closes at 8:00pm!

The Market closes at 8:00pm!

I cannot stress enough the need for us to meet minimum ordering amounts for delivery to be feasible for our Farmers as well as to keep the Market open! We are 3/4’s of the way to minimum! If you haven’t ordered, please click the link below and place your order now!

We appreciate your support of our LOCAL Farmers and of the Market!

Take me to the Crossfit Market.

…a few notes…

My Daily Bread has their yummy offerings on the Market this week. Dabrielle and her son Brandon have created a Gluten Free Pumpkin Roll! We will have samples available at Market pickup this week! Also be sure and check out the Organic Dog Treats! Going forward they will continue weekly offerings! (Barring any unforeseen circumstances and continued support by our Members!)

Our reduced selection of local veggies is due to Mother Nature’s lack of rain for crops to grow and flourish. It has been a difficult year for our Farmers and I ask your prayers them, (as well as for some much needed rain!)

Doug’s Garden has listed Sweet Potato Leaves. Doug called and said he had heard that they are a delicious GREEN! (and goodness knows, we need some greens) He tried several ways of fixing them and has assured me that they are VERY similar to Spinach! I will be trying some this week!

Fry Farm has items listed on the Market this week. Please check out Vicky and Steve’s offerings! Vicky listed a great deal on Sweet Potatoes!

It is time to think about Pre-Ordering Holiday Meats! Hams, Turkeys, Turkey Breasts are all available from the Hutchins Family of Heritage Farm! These options will NOT be available for long and are only available as Pre-Orders! Don’t miss this great opportunity!

For those of you who order MILK — Sam makes a 375 mile round trip to ensure that we have fresh milk. Our milk orders are down drastically from last year and this is becoming a burden to Sam. Financially it is not sustainable. In lieu losing this wonderful product and resource permanently, we are discussing going to an every other week delivery. Cows do not stop giving milk because our orders are down – consistency in ordering is important! I will keep you informed as news becomes available!

Market News

The big news this week is the long awaited return of Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon! After another successful summer fishing in the waters off Alaska, Doug and his family have returned with their catch. You’ll find that they’ve updated their listings (In the “Fish” subcategory under “Meat”), so have at it! I’ve been waiting for this week for a quite a while — I’ve been hoarding my dwindling stash for some time.

Some of you have already taken advantage of the many seedlings available for your fall gardens. I always say the fall is my favorite time to garden in Athens, even though many people shut their gardens down as the first frost approaches. There are nearly seven dozen varieties of veggie and herb seedlings listed this week, which is more than you’ll find and most garden centers this time of year.

Finally, tomorrow’s holiday always sparks discussions of indigenous peoples and colonization. I’d like to plant an idea with you: think about all of the wonderful indigenous foods of North America, many of which have fallen into obscurity. See if you can find some to add to your diet this fall, even if it’s just to try something new for one single meal. Native plants are almost always a better choice to grow than species and varieties not adapted to our environment, but growers won’t plant them if there’s not a demand. Here’s one interesting list to get you started, and you’ll recognize some of them from the ALG listings throughout the year: 20 Native North American Foods with Stories to Tell.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Well, another milestone has been met here on the farm. Our family took a weekend off- like really off the farm. We had a funeral to attend in Ohio this weekend and we left the farm- all of us- really! First time since we moved here over four years ago. My wonderful Aunt and Uncle came and took care of farm chores for us. So no animals were harmed in this weekend off. All were loved on, and fed, and walked. Although the occasion was a solemn one, it was still nice for all of us to pile into the car and go….. just like we used to do, before we were farmers. Before we had animals that depended on us, high tunnels to open and close, watering vegetables by hand, seedling needing watering, and plants that need planting.
Did I mention that I am glad to be back? Oh I am… I missed all of it, even if I was only gone 48 hours.
See you on Thursday,
Angela
