Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

This is the last week of the Market of the year. If you need to order for the following weeks, please do so by Wednesday. We will open up on January 9th again. This two week break allows me to close down all the market activities, get all filing done, and get ready to file taxes for the market.
As this year draws to a close, I want to say a big Thank You to our customers, who support our farmers week in week out. Our farmers get 90% of everything they sell, and by having a market manager, who helps the customers, they are able to get back to their farms and get to producing more awesome veggies, meats, baked goods and etc… for you.
Your support keeps these small farms going year round. The only market that does this in our area. I thank you, and your farmers thank you for the support.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you on Thursday,
Angela

a. Ensure that farmers deliver what has been ordered.
b. More product choices

We would like to offer some responses to the concerns we heard in your feedback:

A) Inherent within farming and farmers’ markets is the idea of unpredictability. What this means in practice is that it is nearly impossible for a farmer to predict growing patterns, weather patterns, and life circumstances. Unfortunately, this can cause some orders, or even parts of some orders, to be unavailable for pick-up. We do know that our farmers make every effort to deliver what has been ordered, and want their customers to have high quality products.

B) RCM accepts many different forms of payment for orders. This includes: cash, check, SNAP/EBT, credit and debit card options.

C) You, as customers, are our greatest asset for spreading the word about RCM. We have tried many avenues of advertising, with little success. However, our word of mouth advertising has been successful.

Thank you again to those who participated. Your feedback will give the RCM board of directors some ideas to consider as we discuss the future of RCM.

Market News

Winter officially starts this week, and so the days will start getting longer once again. There are plenty of other holidays these next few weeks, of course, and Athens Locally Grown will remain open through all of them. Some of our growers are taking time off to slow down and recharge, but we’ll be here for those who have food to offer you, and we’ll be here with our regular hours for you to get it from them. Those of you who are travelling for holidays, safe travels and we’ll see you when you return!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers and artisans, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in April, and you can catch the news on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours from 1-4. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest, and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Ginger Noodle Soup with Asian Greens
from Naturallyella.com

This is a great soup for winter colds, and is delicious with tatsoi or our Chinese cabbage
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 bunch scallions
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
2 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
1 head tatsoi or chinese cabbage
4 ounces ramen noodles (see note)
Salt, if desired
Sesame Seeds, for topping
Red Pepper Flakes, for topping
INSTRUCTIONS
In a stock pot, heat olive oil over medium-low heat. Trim the ends off the scallions and chop up the light green stem. Save the dark green tops for topping. Next, add the scallions to the pot with the garlic and ginger. Cook, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes until the garlic and ginger is fragrant.
Pour in the vegetable broth and water. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 5 minutes.
While broth is simmering, cut the end off the head of greens. Cut off the stems and then cut the stems into thin strips. Roll the leaves together and also cut into strips.
Add the stems to the broth and cook for 5 minutes or until stems are starting to be tender. Follow with the leaves and cook for another 5 minutes more. Finally, stir in the ramen and simmer soup until the noodles and greens are tender, 4 to 6 minutes. Taste and add salt as needed.
Divide soup into two bowls. Then top with chopped scallion greens, sesame seeds, and red pepper flakes

Market News

Hello!

Winter has sure arrived with fury! We’ve had much wind, sleet and brutally cold temperatures. Our crops have been snuggled in tight in our hoohouses and so far have survived. Tonight’s temperature is the lowest yet so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

We will let you know, of course!! For now, please stock up on frozen items, dry goods, veggies and eggs for the coming weeks!

We have lots of items for your holiday needs! Your special meals can include lots of local meats and produce. We also have some nice ideas for gift giving!

We have Gift Certificates available! Get a friend started with Fresh Harvest, or support someone you know is already using our service.
