Market News

I really felt like the rains we got last week signaled the start of cooler weather, but instead we got another week of mugginess. This time, though, I’m sure of it. The nighttime temps will be dropping down into the low forties for several days, and while the tomatoes and eggplant might hate that, the fall veggies are going to have a great time. The seedlings in my own garden have been waiting for a week like this, and I can’t wait for them to finally start outgrowing the summertime bugs that are munching on all their leaves. Our growers all have plants in the ground that need growth spurts, but after this coming week I think the spinach and lettuce and other fall greens will grow about as fast as they can cut them.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9-12. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Winnsboro, TX:  Opening Day

Welcome to the new online market and thank you for being a customer and a charter member of this new venture. Grow with us.

In the coming weeks and months we will be working to add more products and more growers to the online offerings. Embry Family Farm will be joining us with their lovely produce. Patrick and Esther plan to grown year round and we look forward to their fall/winter garden. East Texas Aquaponics will also become part of the online market. If you are not familiar with their delicious lettuce greens you soon will be.

The online store will be available weekly; Monday mornings at 8 am and continuously until Tuesday at 7 pm. Your order will be ready for pickup from 4 – 6 pm on Thursday of the same week. You will receive a weekly email notification that the store is open, and if you place an order, you will receive a reminder to pick up your order.

Pick Up Location: The pickup location will be outside of StardragonFly Herb Shop at Elm and Market Streets. The shops official address is 300 N. Main but the entrance is on Elm Street. The Winnsboro Farmers’ Market banner will be visible.

We understand that occasionally there are emergencies that are unavoidable and we will try to work with you if you have a problem with picking up your order. We strongly suggest you make arrangements for someone else to pick up your order if you are unable. Please make sure you call either of the numbers listed below if you have an emergency. A no call/no show will result in your being removed from our customer base. Farmers with perishable items cannot recoup their losses if a customer fails to pick up.

Payment: We accept cash payments at pick up time. We may, in the future, be able to offer online payments and accept checks.

Please provide feedback. What works and what doesn’t? We want to make ordering easy for you.

Market News

Hello!

Sure feels like Fall out there! We are finishing up Fall chores, like planting strawberries and garlic for next year, and sowing cover crop to nourish the soil.

There is a bounty of purple hull peas on the Market this week, so stock up
If you missed the opportunity earlier in the summer. Also the fall lettuce is in! There’s a great selection of both head and salad mix!

It is once again a very bountiful and diverse week of offerings on the Marketplace! Seriously, there is so much goodness in one place it is hard to know where else you could get all we have available!

The Bloomy Rind is back this week with a great curated selection of the finest artisanal cheeses! And have you tried an apple gallete yet from Dozen Bakery? It’s the perfect Fall treat!

We really appreciate all the support you show for Fresh Harvest and for all our farmers and small business owners!

See you Wednesday!
John and Tallahassee

Coming Events

Greener Acres Farm:  Stock Up This Week -- NO Online Market Next Week

Stock Up This Week — NO Online Market Next Week

We will be out of town next week, and therefore the online market will be closed the week of Oct 21-28. Sorry for the inconvenience. But this is a great opportunity to stock up.

We still have a great deal of produce for sale, even in October!!

Green"er" Acres Farm has the absolute last of the tomatoes for sale and a TON of peppers, most drastically reduced.

And we have been searching the internet for recipes to use Golden Farms Certified Organic Buckwheat, that do not involve the old standby, pancakes. We have found a delicious Chocolate Buckwheat Cake (naturally GLUTEN FREE).

Miami County Locally Grown:  Who will win $10 to shop the market?

I’m hardly waiting to draw this month’s winner of our Refer-A-Friend program!

All you have to do is tell your friends and family about the Virtual Market – and when they come to pick-up their order, have them drop your name so we know YOU referred them to us!

Then your name is entered in our monthly drawing for a $10 Virtual Market Gift Certificate!

Good for any purchase and any combination of products – no expiration date! How easy is that?

And less than 3 hours to place your order for the week… Happy Shopping! :-)

Dawson Local Harvest:  Lettuce, Kale, Snow Peas, & More on This Week's Dawson Harvest!

Dawson Local Harvest for October 20th

Lettuce, Kale, Snow Peas, & More on This Week’s Dawson Harvest!

HI EVERYBODY!

Big Week for Produce Lovers as LEILANI’S has several cool-weather Veggies ready to pick! Lettuce, a couple of varieties of Kale, and delectable little Snow Peas join Green Beans, Cucumbers, Eggplants, and all sorts of Peppers. And we still have fresh-picked TOMATOES, including great-tasting Heirlooms still on the vine. Take advantage of this abundance while it’s available!

BACK IN TIME FARMS has added an 8-pack Chicken to their Market listing this week. This ultra-tender pastured Chicken pack has 2 breasts, 2 wings, 2 thighs, & 2 backs for a great family dinner and lots more. Check it in the Meats section.

What’s the Deal with Raw Milk?
As you know, the Dawson Harvest has raw Milk from LITTLE BROWN COW CREAMERY. So why should you drink unpasteurized raw Milk? When you heat milk to destroy potential harmful bacteria it also degrades heat-sensitive vitamins like C, E, B-12, and good antibodies. Raw Milk offers some natural protection from allergies and asthma, and, of course, it has a richer, creamier taste! Try a gallon yourself, on the Milk tab of The Market.

THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!

REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.

Have a happy and healthy week!
