Market News

This week our town takes a collective pause, what with pretty much all of the schools in town at all levels taking spring break. I know many of you are leaving town for the week, and I hope you have a grand time! Even though spring break is here before spring, the warming weather has our growers working overtime, and they’ve got plenty of items listed for you folks staying behind.

It also looks like it’ll be a decent week, weather-wise, with a few cold nights giving way to actual Spring-like (not Summer) temperatures and scattered bits of rain. I’m hoping to get some more garden time this week, pulling out the winter weeds and putting seeds and seedlings down in their place. I’ve had gardens large and small pretty much every year of my adult life, and this time of year I want to spend every moment out in them. My space is much smaller now than it was a few years ago, but it feels just as good with a few raised beds as when I had a full acre under cultivation.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

Most other area markets are closed down for the season or have moved to winter hours. The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return on March 24, and you can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is closed for the season, and you can watch for their return on April 28 on their website here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running Saturdays from 9 to noon. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

ALFN Local Food Club:  ALFN Member Update and THANK YOU!

Hi ALFN Community!

There’s lots to share with you. We’ve been hard at work!

Fundraiser SUCCESS!
THANK YOU to all of you who supported our most recent fundraising efforts to help us implement new software to support the weekly online market. We couldn’t have done it without your generous support! And, because of the success of our fundraiser, the board voted at the end of January to move forward with the implementation of Local Food Marketplace. As you can imagine, there is a lot of work to be done. We are working through the details and timeline and will have more to share with you soon.

What Local Food Marketplace means for ALFN
This new tool will allow ALFN to run a more efficient and transparent (on both sides of the operation) market. You will be able to:

  • order from your phone or tablet
  • sort products by attributes that are important to you, and
  • choose between several different membership options that fit your budget.

The board will have access to important data points that will allow us to watch and measure sales trends more accurately and allow us many more options to hopefully increase market sales.

Please be patient as we transition
If you’ve ever been through a total systems change before you know what a major task it is to complete. We will communicate every step of the way so that our customers and vendors will be able to make this transition as easily as possible. It will take a bit of learning and we know that all of you are up to the challenge! The good news is that the new market site will work better for you and once you get used to where things are located, your shopping experience will be seamless and easy again.

Other exciting news
We have two new board members who joined in January and have several more interested in serving ALFN. If you see Amanda Perez or Thurman Green at Saturday pick-up, please thank them for their interest in serving our organization.

We continue to look for new board members. Specifically, we need someone with tax and/or bookkeeping experience to serve on our board. If you or someone you know is interested, please have them contact Claire by email at littlerockfoodclub@gmail.com.
We are so grateful for your support of our mission and of good, local food. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at anytime.

On behalf of the board,
Tifany Hamlin, Chair

CLG:  Opening Bell: Beef, Walnuts, Plants, Honey!

Good afternoon!

A few Tomato plants will be going in the ground on Wednesday morning at Cedar Rock Ridge. If all goes right, 80 days later we’ll have some delicious Cherokee Purple tomatoes! If you’ve never had a garden before, why not start with just one tomato plant in a pot? If you need a little help getting started, talk to me on Friday. You’re welcome to come out to Cedar Rock Ridge and pick out a large pot, fill it with compost, and put a tomato plant in it, along with a bamboo stake to tie it up when it gets larger.

This is also the time of year to be dividing perennial plants. We now have Scarlet Bee balm, Korean hyssop, purple coneflower and other flowering plants available. These are great for attracting pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Thanks to our wonderful Growers who worked hard all winter to provide us with fresh produce! And Strack Farm will be back online in just a couple of weeks, with lots of early spring goodies.

Be sure to SEARCH for your favorite items using the search field. Over 575 items available now!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Click here to start shopping:

https://conway.locallygrown.net/market

Please check your email a few minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!
